Give the People What They Want

Back in simpler times, we used to make a big deal of the NBA Draft here in Gheorgheville. Some of our longest and most entertaining comment threads were inspired by the annual talent distribution/fashion show extravaganza. As our resident expert, Mark used to gin up cogent and contrarian analysis of the players on offer for the league's clubs.

While we remain simple men (the women, far more complex and interesting), times change. And the amount of time we have to spend on frivolous pursuits has diminished. Or we've just drifted to different frivolous pursuits. Fucking Twitter.

Times change, but the draft remains a constant. So join in this evening so you can hear me sing the praises of this year's Draymond Green - still the best call I've ever made on draft day - and so we can all relish the sartorial excesses of this year's class. Got a long way to go to top Jalen Rose.

Our lord and savior Gheorghe on draft night:

Samaki's sartorial splendor:

And the man most likely to throw the whole thing into chaos early...

  3. it’s participatory, my man. enhance as you see fit.

here’s my first draft hot take: i wouldn’t touch trae young with bea arthur’s dick. he’s got mark macon written all over him.

  4. He’s stealing your content, TR!

I would love to still do my draft preview. Especially for this draft. I have many takes, even some hot takes, on this particular draft. Alas, my job and parenthood don’t give me the time.

This draft feels really crazy and has the potential for a shit ton of movement and surprises. I want so badly for the magic to make a move to get my Slovenian son Luka. Sadly, I already know I’ll be disappointed.

  5. so much potential for so many teams to fuck it up tonight: kings, grizz, mark's magic, knicks

  9. did tr make the macon call already? if so, i owe him royalties for my sampling his dope beat.

  10. I don't think I've ever had a hot take, I'm always the one giving the heat.

  11. Barry Trotz to the island.

    Argentina on the brink.

  12. Impressive performance by Croatia. Equally as embarrassing for Argentina.

  13. TR has made the Mark Macon comparison multiple times. I don’t see it. I think Young shoots it too well to flame out completely. At worst I think he could be an off the bench heat check guy. Like an Eddie House type. That’s obviously not what you want from a lottery pick though.

  14. young’s college shooting numbers are really close to macon’s. different eras, different body types, but when defenses got some time to game plan for young, it got a lot tougher for him.

  15. Without looking, take a guess at how much Macon’s teammates Eddie Jones & Aaron McKie made in the NBA combined.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'll guess that Eddie Jones made $50M and Aaron McKie made $35M.

  17. Mark Macon came way before Jones and McKie. Rick Brunson was the PG for the Temple team with Jones and McKie.

As for Young, his passing is a highly underrated skill. The space of the NBA and having better teammates (Oklahoma was pretty bad around him) will actually give him more space. Not saying he’ll be great but I think discounting his offensive skill is foolish. Now his defense...that’s another story.

  18. The missed each other by 1 year at Temple. Would have been interesting had they overlapped.

Needless to say, I was stunned that those two guys made over 150M.

  19. So not way before then. Macon felt a lot earlier to me. Such is the difference between junior high and high school when you’re young.

  20. Win Stanley Cup, leave team to make double at a division rival. Nice, Trotz.

  21. Fucking Magic couldn’t even pull off the Luka deal. He’s gonna be a Maverick. I’d rather the Magic trade down now. I’m not super psyched on Mo Bamba. But he fits the profile of the guys the new Magic front office likes so I bet he’s the pick.

  22. the Hawks move is...confusing

    ReplyDelete
  23. goes without saying that i think the hawks made a ginormous mistake there

  25. i'm starting to think jameis winston is a sexual predator

    ReplyDelete
  26. carters got that coordinated thing going.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Would’ve rather had Colin Sexton or traded back but I’ll now pray for Mo to be the ultimate modern big man. And not leave Orlando if he becomes an All-NBA Center. Because, you know, there’s a history of that happening.

  28. lol MJ gonna fuck this up like always

  29. Hahaha. I thought the same thing. I am NOT a Myles Bridges fan.

  30. Ernie Grunfeld is going to take Michael Porter Jr.

  31. Chauncey’s player comparisons are bad.

  32. Grayson Allen in Utah is just too perfect.

  33. Gheorghe shout out to start round 2!

  34. Elie Okobo played for the same French team as Gheorghe. Gheorghe gets a shout out to start the second round!

  36. Watched no draft today. I watched my summer travel team win again to go to 5-0-1 in the summer league. Would be an amazing feat by me to get this team to some sort of title game.

I do not like Trae Young. At all. And I made that Macon reference a bunch all year. I don't think his head is screwed on straight, I don't think he has the stones to be successful, and I think he was too easily shut down by Big 12 defenses. Great college players should succeed despite being the focal point of opposing coaches' game plans.

If he aspires for a Donovan Mitchell-like rookie year, he'll be chucking like crazy.

  37. My 10 y/o called out KU's 3 pt shooter Mykhaulik as a potential draftee. I disagreed. He'll be psyched to find out he was right.

  39. we're in the process of finishing our basement, nearing completion of the initial build out. so we're now in the market for a television. any recommendations from the people of gheorghe? definitely don't need anything fancy - this set will be primarily used by my kids and their friends in the first 5 years of its life.

  40. Took the boys to see the new Jurassic World movie today. It is very long, but not too painful. Bryce Dallas Howard is easy on the eyes, but wears too much eye makeup.

My favorite part of the movie was realizing that Jame Gumb has a prominent supporting role. That voice is distinct. “It puts the dino in the cage.”

  41. Jame Gumb had an alias, John Grant. Which is the name of our wonderful black fraternity brother.

  42. i love our black friend!

  46. indeed, tr. love to the zfamily.

  47. I had a long conversation with Z a few weeks back. He was dealing with more at one point than most of us will in a decade. And handling it better than most of will/would.
