Musical Madness, Day 3

The on-court action hasn't been all that mad yet, so we fully expect today to be bonkers. And if it's not, all the better for the pool I filled out solely based on KenPom ratings. Go Zags! We're in the business of slapping together barely related musings this week, so here's a little more.

Both this fine blog and Sentence of Dave have posted about the legendary Tuareg band Tinariwen in the past few weeks. I'll be damned if you can't hear their influence in the first part of this excellent, multi-faceted (and wicked chill) new single from English indie group Alt-J.

Run the Jewels rolled into DC last month for a couple of shows at Echostage. While they were in our little town, they played one of the cooler NPR Tiny Desk Concert sets I've seen (and there have been some amazing Tiny Desk shows - you could do worse than spend an evening sipping a beverage of your choice and binge-watching on YouTube). The chemistry between Killer Mike and El-P is amazing in such a small space - their ad-libbing is effortless. Make sure you watch to the very end for a message from Mike.

As always, this is but a vehicle for your commenting genius. Go get 'em, champ.

  1. The crew teams are back in town to ruin my gym going experience. This time it's Norway. Fuck Norway.

  2. my little one really enjoyed the norway area at epcot. she walks around randomly saying, 'velcome to norvay'. thought you'd want to know.

  3. Best part of Epcot is that indoor ride in Mexico, where you can force your kids to go on repeatedly while you chug margaritas at a nearby bar.

That's my vote for best part of Epcot. My kids would surely disagree.

  4. That is a very solid option at Epcot. Sake in Japan is also pretty good. And high ABV beers in Canada.

  5. I love Notre Dame's PG but his low top black shoes and white crew socks look is fucking awful.

  7. Watching the tournament has made me realize that I NEVER watch CBS programming. Bull? Scorpion? I have never heard of these shows. Plus I tend to look down my nose at any network that employs Kevin James.

I am recovering from going out with my younger brothers in law last night. Been awhile but I continue to be struck by the tinder-ization of bar life. Guys and gals essentially just give each other a thumbs up or thumbs down and get on with it. Not sure it was that easy in our single days...

  8. I assume you'll be watching GGG tonight, Mayhugh...

  9. How can Nova not secure the baseline on that play!?

  10. Mark - Absolutely, although I think there is a high probability that Jacobs' lower level of competition will show through in a couple of rounds. GGG has a pretty good beard (and GGG seems to think that too) so we'll see how much he respects the power after a few rounds. If you're watching make sure you tune in for Chocolatito on the undercard. Perhaps the most entertaining fighter to watch right now, depending on how you feel about Lomachenko.

That WI-NOVA game was a pleasing tilt. And about a fifth of my pool just lost their champ.

  11. I like that group of Villanova players but I'm not mad about that loss.

  12. Pour some out for Marvin Berry's cousin.

  13. St Mary's appears to have 11 white guys. Arizona's cheerleading squad is remarkably competent.

  14. In other news, my neighbor (1) went to Villanova and (2) gave up drinking for lent. Double dagger. The moral here is don't be Catholic.

  15. St Mary's has 7 Australians on its roster.

  16. The high school in the town where Zman and I live is essentially a feeder school for Villanova. Villanova loves our town b/c all the kids pay full-freight. Villanova grads are a bit uppity around these parts. Makes their loss that much more enjoyable. Slow your roll, folks.

  17. Who is the child coaching the Gators?

  18. The 157-lb title bout for the NCAA wrestling championship is a good one. Favorite Jason Nolf from Penn State is only a sophomore, but is becoming THE MAN in NCAA wrestling.

  19. Nolf crushed it, 14-6. 4 of his opponents' 6 points were after Nolf got 2 points for takedowns, then let the guy up.

  20. Mike White is the Florida coach. He's 40. Looks closer to 30.

  21. he's a man. having a decent night, too. ain't that right, mark?

  22. The big boys are getting into it on ESPN. Amazing to watch.

  23. doug gottlieb is openly campaigning for the oklahoma state head coach job on twitter. pretty fascinating stuff.

  24. Florida plays in MSG next Friday. Hmmm.

  25. Gottlieb has hinted at it before. This is next level.

I say OSU should do it. Program is mired in mid tier mediocrity. Needs a jumpstart. Would be fascinating to watch. And Gottlieb's brother is a good and experienced assistant. Would be a huge asset for a first time coach.

  27. TR- did you wrestle in HS?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nope. I'm just DVRing matches for my kids. Watching college wrestling at its highest level is impressive. 180-lb dudes moving like lightning out there.

I heard about Nolf this season. He's one of Penn State's five champs. Impressive run for Team Pederast.

  29. I tuned in for the end of the Nickal match. My HS had a good wrestling program and a couple of friends of mine were really good so I watched a few matches back then. The dedication and toughness of wrestlers is impressive.

  30. Iowa State-Purdue is entertaining.

  31. Iowa State - Purdue is the alma mater battle of my two grandfathers.

They had a nice 69-71 moment for a good while too. I thought of zman, tr, and teej, naturally.

  32. RIP Chuck Berry. I know most folks figured he was long gone, but in truth, this is a big divot.
