Fashion is Stupid: PGA TOUR Edition

Rickie Fowler's fashion-forward golf getups have garnered the young star nearly as much attention as has his game. Generally speaking, I'm all for looks that edge golf towards athleticism and fun and away from Bushwoodian conformity. But Fowler and Puma have taken a step too far.

Check out this hot garbage:

Note first the high-tops, which, as one with chronically weak ankles, I can perhaps understand. Though walking 18 at Doral ain't exactly a run at Rucker Park. But the astronaut cuff with velcro strap take the whole thing from ambitious to 'rejected K-Pop video costume'. And the fact that these necessitate the gathered elastic pants hem? I can't even.

Apologies for the hijacking...but felt compelled to add this...

Wear what you'd like Rickster. Carry on everyone.

Apologies for the rehijacking of Danimal's hijacking, but if the standard-issue golf doofus thinks wearing those clown shoes is gonna help him land a Golf Annie of that caliber, I've got some Trump Steaks stock to sell him.

I have a work contact who lives in OKC and went to Oklahoma State. I played golf w/ him for a work shindig last year. He wore a pair of Pumas that Ricky once wore. He was stoked to have the same shoe size, having gotten them through some contact.

He shot 120 and barely beat me. It was raining and there was a caddy there who looked like he was questioning his life decisions. The only action we went home with that night was a cold.

I agree that those pants and shoes are goofy (the shoes look like those old Reebok hightops with the velcro straps from the 1980s) as is Fowler's love of flat-brimmed caps and Bieberesque haircuts. But he's a 27 year old professional athlete who gets paid to wear this stuff. He looks like he's having fun. Good for him.

think of the children, z. and the middle-aged hacks that will buy that shit because they think it must be cool if rickie's wearing it.

I have seen more than one near middle-aged, out of shape hack and loads of youths don Rickie's Sunday garb down to the very last thread. The first thought is, "that guy is hilarious" and the 2nd one is "he's not trying to be hilarious", and the 3rd one is, "that is sad".

I would say that I resemble your comment Danimal, except I can only wish I was middle aged.

Most people dress like idiots as a general matter. This was the case before Rickie Fowler was born and it will continue after his death. Good for him if he can make some cheddar while facilitating others' poor sartorial choices.

zman is a fashion libertarian. i dig it.

The worse other people dress, the better we look. "Stand next to the guy in zubaz" was a guiding principle of looking dapper in the old days. Same story applies here.

that's my special purpose! making other people look good. i'm wearing sweatpants as i type this . . .

I like Rickie's obnoxious golf course fashion.
And I wish any sporting apparel company would make decent options for women's golf clothes.
Everything is so boxy and unflattering for women....

On a different topic, I'm so happy that Spotlight won Best Picture.
Everyone needs to see that movie--it's awesome. And you don't even have to be Catholic to appreciate it.

Speaking of Spotlight, the movie's director (Tom McCarthy) grew up in the town next to where Zman and I live - New Providence. My wife went to high school w/ his younger brother. It's a very nice Irish family, and good to see him get some success. He bootstrapped his way up. He wrote and directed The Station Agent, Dinklage's breakout role, and also directed neat little flick called The Visitor. He was a writer for the Pixar movie Up and acted in The Wire, Good Night and Good Luck and a few other things. Neat success story for my wife's hometown (other than her marrying me, of course).

As for the movie, I thought it was good, but I'm not sure what direction they gave to Rufalo about his voice. Every single time he spoke, all I could think was "what are you doing to your voice, dude?". He talks like a meathead w/ marbles in his mouth. It was distracting. McAdams, Liev and Keaton are great though.

you know who else acted in the wire with a gtb connection?

Whitney slept w/ Bubbles?

Yep.

Wee-Bay kicked Pip's butt in jail?

I just started watching The Wire last week. So who else acted in it w/ a gtb connection? Do tell.
