Dear Gheorgies

Dear Gheorghies,

I'm looking for a little advice.  This Saturday at 1:30PM or so, I am dropping my dad off at the Palm Beach, FL airport.  I will then drive his car to Virginia.  Shit better have SiriusXM.
Thanks, Google, for reminding me how short the plane flight is

Really, the only deadline I have is to be somewhere local by kickoff of the big game Sunday evening.  That means I have about 29 hours to make a 13-hour drive.  Hmmm.

So, GTBers . . . what's my plan?  I'd ring up Mark or Danimal, but (a) that's presumptuous that they would be home and want to hang with me, and more importantly (b) I need to get further up the road than Florida.

Any suggestions are welcomed for a stopover.  Best towns?  Bars?  Libraries?

Shotgun's also open to any takers.  I know, don't all jump at once.

Anyway . . . that's where I'll be this weekend.  Somewhere on this map.

Arrivederci,

Whitney

charleston doesn't seem that far out of your way, and it's a choice spot. that's my tops.

Second on Charleston. I love that whole Charleston/Savannah/Hilton Head region. Hard to see how you could fail if you search "best bar/pub in Charleston".

When I was 21, I drove from NJ to FL to pursue an oddball job in the midst of my "what am I gonna do with myself after college" phase. I brought a couple sticks of grass with me. I remember sparking a skinny one at about 8 AM on I-95 and listening to all of the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Past" and Springsteen's "Greetings from Atlantic City" back-to-back on cassette.

So definitely do that.

I DVR'd the Wiz-Warriors last night, hoping to catch up after episode 7 of Making a Murderer with the missus. I watched the first quarter and it was spectacular. Curry turned that whole building into Warriors fans. And his steal -> 3-pointer from eight feet behind the line was epic. I thin he ended up with 25 in the quarter, but he could've put up 30 or more. His scoring was legitimately in the flow of the game, not b/c he was chucking up shots every possession.

Whit - hmmm....our world here at casa de Danimal is a wee bit topsy turvy between a houseful of sick people and the new "Mutt's Cutts" which has yours truly going solo w/kids all wkd for the forseeable future. Howevaaaah, your drive from WPB to my neck of the woods will be about 4-4.5. Driving to Charleston is another 4'ish. How ambitious are you? Would you consider driving all the way to Charleston after dropping big daddy off or were you hoping to break it up? Please advise.

And yes, I third the Charleston move - there's no better option.

My first reaction was to suggest you stop in Charleston and it looks like everyone else felt the same way. That said, Savannah is even less of a detour from Google's green line, it's at just about halfway mark of your trip, and the first dirty movie I ever bought featured Savannah. So I would stop in Savannah.

Yes, closer to 95 but would make for a more painful trip back to va on sunday, probably an add'l 2 hours or so...that's a tricky one. you could get ambitious and drive all the way to south of theee border. Dillon, sc rocks.

go to south of the border

you never sausage a place

Agreed on Charleston. My brother lives in N. Charleston so you could potentially have a free place to crash.

Savannah is great but so is Charleston. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. I'd tell you to stop in and see me but I'm only 2.5 hours north of your drop off point so you'll just be settling in for your drive and I doubt you'd want to make the 20-30 minute drive east to where I live.

Two additional things:

All this Charleston love means we're all in for a large scale G:TB summit at next year's CAA tourney. Right?

Steph is fucking absurd. He ended the first half with 36 points on 13-14 shooting and 8-9 from three. That's not even video game numbers. It's beyond the imagination.

also, there's some great hiking when you get near boone, nc . . .

i assume this bit of advice will be roundly ignored

The only thing Whit has probably hiked up lately is a skirt.

the gtb charleston maxi-summit is a must-do

Nice one, Squeak

If you like Neko Case go to your favorite streaming service and add 'Truckdriver Gladiator Mule'. It has all 96 songs she has released minus b-sides. Great compilation.

the only thing whit has hiked up lately is his skirt? or a skirt?

big difference

tribe beats northeastern in boston. that never happens. scored 55 points in the second half. now 16-6, 8-3 - best start since the 97-98 team was 20-6.

Dates for '17 CAA tourney in Charleston? I may have to start laying the groundwork for that hall pass soon.

Not nice one, Dave

Well, thanks for the guidance. If I don't drive straight through, Charleston seems to be the consensus.

I'm in on Charleston trip. We should get rooms booked as soon as humanly possible, which is usually 1 year out. Might even want to look into Airbnb so you guys can get frat-tay.

Thanks Mark!

sally jenkins on cam newton today in the wapo is a breathtaking mixture of get off my lawn and white privilege. enjoy while you're wondering how this got past an editor:

Has Jenkins always been this much of an ass? It feels like she's specializes in these types of columns nowadays.

Good call by Dan on the AirBnB/VRBO angle. We could probably get a good deal on a large house for the Charleston trip/fiasco.
