Super Bowl Open Thread

We really needed a new post, especially with Clarence and Mayhugh already talking about tonight's big game in the comments of the post below. So here is your Super Bowl filler post - if someone has any real insight on the game, of course feel free to trump this here nonsense. Comments, predictions, recipes, horoscopes all welcome in the comments section.

I now turn this post over to the First Family of Springfield...

happy birthday, Marls

Thanks Teej. Next stop 40, although my hairline has been there for years.

Mark, I agree with you about this Duke team. Mrs. Marls is a Dukie and I usually take joy in rooting against them. I think they are less douchey and more likeable mainly because they are just not that good.

zman said...

Mrs. Marls is a wonderful person and I am upset that you referred to her as dookie. At least call her Duquan.

Mike Francessa compared today's game to SB XXV and posited that Seattle will chew up the clock with Marshawn Lynch. This means that they will come out 5 wide and Wilson will sling it all over the place.

mayhugh said...

That was the connection I was making as well, Marls. When they aren't super loaded they are downright affable.

I just don't see Denver moving the ball on Seattle consistently. Someone tell me why this game would play out any differently than the Seattle-New Orleans game. NO had loads of weapons and a top tier QB and they could not go 80 yards on long drives and they could not get a big play. Add in that NO's defense may actually be better than Denver's (which has been playing over its head in the playoffs) and I am not seeing a Denver win. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Seattle slows things down on offense, moving the chains with Lynch and Wilson scrambling and popping the ball in the flat, and gets the win. Call it 23-14.

more importantly, your william and mary tribe are getting 1 point this afternoon at james madison. little surprised by this line, though the wrens are coming off an asswhipping at home against delaware and the dukes just beat northeastern. madison also has revenge on their minds, as the tribe smoked 'em by 25 earlier this season. a tribe loss creates a 5-way tie for third in the conference. says here to take w&m and the point.

Marls said...

Fuck. Rob just guaranteed a tribe loss.

rob said...

got the last game right, marls. on a one-game winning streak.

rob said...

tribe game is nationally televised on nbcsn. while we've got a bone to pick with nbcsn, we'll still watch.

Pls tell me the news is Phillip Seymour Hoffman passing is a hoax. So bummed about that. Dude was amazing. I saw him in a Broadway show a few years back and he crushed it. I also used to see him in the West village all the time. He lived near the venerable burger joint The Corner Bistro.

WSJ reporting it, but nobody else.

zman said...

Dammit. NY Post has it too. I saw him in Death of a Salesman last year. It was like being punched in the stomach over and over again. Willie Loman's final scene with his son is raw and elemental and Hoffman worked himself into a lather of tears and snot. That's Loman's last scene. Fifteen minutes later Hoffman came out for the curtain call with the rest of the cast and he was still an emotional mess. He had to do that every day, sometimes twice a day, for however long the play ran. It's not surprising that someone who gets so emotionally invested in a role needs to turn to drugs to numb himself. But it's a goddamn shame.

zman said...

I forgot to add that his last scene is the next-to-last scene, so he was off stage while everyone else was burying his dead character.

TR said...

There is no bigger Boogie Nights fan than me. He was so funny as Scotty J.

Danimal said...

That is depressing.

zman said...

Scotty J is a dead ringer for our own Michael Jack.

rob said...

damn. that's just awful. i don't think you could name five actors better than that guy. he's done so much incredible work that it's hard to believe he was only 46.

Mark said...

Whoa. That's terrible. Easily one of the most gifted actors of his generation with what would've seemed like many years ahead of him. Damn.

rob said...

marcus thornton hasn't taken a shot in the game's first 11 minutes. and the tribe still leads by 7.

T.J. said...

Wing competition occurring at house tonight for game between me, Wife, and Jerry

rob said...

volume eating, or taste testing?

rob said...

marcus thornton is good at basketball.

T.J. said...

Taste testing. I have faith in my Teej Dry Rub. That sounds dirtier than intended.

rob said...

tribe is completely shitting themselves in the second half. 16-point lead down to 2 because they keep turning it over. superneat.

Clarence said...

My buddy Jeff and I hunkered down at the Dirty Buffalo, a local wing joint with Bills flair everywhere. Been here for a couple of hours. Which of you geniuses can tell me who sat down next to me here at the bar???

Zman excluded.

rob said...

bruce smith, obvs.

Dave said...

philip seymour hoffman's ghost?

Dave said...

that's a shame that seymour-hoffman died, while ben affleck and keanu reeves will continue to make movies.

rob said...

tribe opened up an 11-point lead after letting jmu come all the way back to go in front. and we've since given away nearly the entire lead. reallyneat.

TR said...

Hoffman's filmography is amazing: Twister, Sydney (PTA's first film), Boogie Nights, Big Lebowski, Magnolia, Talented Mr. Ripley, Almost Famous, Punch-Drunk Love, 25th Hour, Mission Impossible, Love Liza (great performance in the dreariest movie ever), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (great indie flick), Moneyball, The Master and the Hunger Games series, among others.

Worst part of the story is that he left behind three kids, aged 10, 7 and 5.

zman said...

Capote, cold mountain, and zwoman is worried how this will impact the hunger games series.

zman said...

These are all the children on Buono voters.

T.J. said...

Z, pretty sure they already filmed the last two Hunger Games films. Zwoman can breathe a sigh of relief.

rob said...

tribe wins, despite their best efforts to give the game away. two correct gambling calls in a row for me.

TR said...

Is that Melissa Stark on NFL network? She is so easy on the eyes that it almost makes me overlook how douchteastic Mike Silver and his fedora are. Almost.

Clarence said...

Plus Rob won the Dirty Buffalo question. Obvious but amusing. I reminded him of he and Tasker being in my kitchen. Shared pictures on my phone. He had a look like "I don't remember any of these, please don't let them get weird and horrible." Then he bolted.

rob said...

marcus thornton had 26 today. third time in the past 4 games he's had exactly that many. he's basketballing.

zman said...

Favre is wasted.

I've had a pretty manly day. Lifted at the gym, then came home and built a big cabinet/pantry. Going to celebrate by drinking beer and placing too many prop bets. Hopefully I don't lose my shirt on these props.

zman said...

Despite never using seat belts and a complete lack of airbags, no one gets hurt in car crashes on the Dukes of Hazzard.

Marls said...

Denver 4, Seattle 6. Keep me in your prayers.

zman said...

When aren't you in my prayers?

mr kq said...

Was at Fado DC at 930 am for Ire v Sco. Guinness for breakie. Big win for the lads in Green. Ended up scrumming down with the boys including a Scottish and Italian National in the pub. Many times. It's been a good day.

Clarence said...

Kenny, I'm jealous. That's a better highlight than having a Bud Light with Bruce Smith. In fairness to him, there were a couple of fat aged Buffalo fans there whop took celeb liberties i thought were a bit much, and then he bolted.

Where were you in the pack for the scrumdown? Hoping 8.

TR said...

Joe Namath just won the Super Bowl again.

zman said...

Namath is the tits.

mr kq said...

Prop. It was 7's style 3 man. Pushed each other all around the bar. At one point a "bigger" lass in an Ireland jumper came in at hooker. It was awesome.

zman said...

Clutch.

Clarence said...

Zhipster. Loving it.

Marls said...

Thanks z.

Marls said...

How are the wings at chateau Teej?

zman said...

I just got stung by a yellow jacket. In my living room. In February. Bad omen?

T.J. said...

Why is Kenny Anderson in your living room?

zman said...

'twas Eddie Elisma actually.

mayhugh said...

It's hard not to be won over by this performance so far. Seattle is prepared in every facet of the game. They are getting virtually nothing from Lynch and still moving the chains. The D is stifling.

Mark said...

I thought Seattle would win and took them +3 but this I shocking.

mayhugh said...

Wow. That Denver drive felt like pulling teeth to go 40 yards and then that happens? This is Giants Ravens all over again.

rob said...

what in the fuck was moreno doing there?

T.J. said...

Wings have been great. A million times better than this Broncos offense.

mayhugh said...

What was Vegas giving for a shutout? Someone might get rich tonight.

zman said...

Does Maserati really need to advertise?

mayhugh said...

That SONOS commercial was pretty damn classy.

TR said...

In case anybody cares, this is my rebuttal to the RHCP comments made in the last post:

Snow is a great, great song. I urge you to watch the video. Very cool job of a band being aware that they, their crew and their fans are all aging.

The big question is if they have their shirts off when they play. They did during the R&R HoF show and it was weird, gross and sad (not in that order).

Bruno Mars is hard to hate. He also has the body of a lesbian. My wife and I couldn't stop laughing about that when he hosted SNL.

Marls said...

MetLife Stadium. Not a great spot for the Manning family this season.

TR said...

Who's the MVP so far? Wilson? Harvin? Peyton has been Seattle's best player.

zman said...

It's Janelle Monae!

TR said...

Sha Na Na wants their blazers back.

Marls said...

I am jealous of Me. Mars' hair.

Marls said...

Or Mr. Mars' hair.

zman said...

I think that's little Richard.

zman said...

RHCP's trainers made a small fortune over the past month or two.

mayhugh said...

This has been a pretty decent half time show. More entertaining than much of the Denver product on the field thus far.

Marls said...

L Ron Hubbard!!!!

mayhugh said...

Holy shit. They should have gone for onside.

zman said...

No one does a better job of projecting defeat via body language than the Manning brothers.

Danimal said...

Can we retire the color purple already?

T.J. said...

Me to sis in law: bet Harvin returns this kick for TD. If so, I'll chug a beer.

Beer chugged.

Danimal said...

Manning'so feet have been way too happy all night

rob said...

Clarence said...

Retire The Color Purple, Danimal? Typical Winchester reaction, doesn't like films about "uppity" people who have different appearances.

TR said...

Boat drink?

Marls said...

How do you punt here?

Clarence said...

Motorboatin'?

zman said...

Motörhead?

zman said...

Seattle held the best offense ever scoreless for almost 20 minutes. Best defense ever?

Marls said...

If you had to give the MVP right now, wh do you give it to? Seattle D line?

zman said...

Seattle held the best offense ever scoreless for twenty minutes. Best defense ever?

Clarence said...

"Best ever" is such an unquantifiable ESPN/Rolling Stone/VH-1 idle discussion. We're better than that.

Sexiest ever? Hell yes.

Clarence said...

Also, with Percy Harvin, Kam Chancellor, and Russell Wilson, it's the most Vrginia-y Super Bowl team.

zman said...

Sorry, forty minutes.

rob said...

lemmy!

zman said...

If you drive a Kia you will score a hot younger blonde woman and be like Neo.

rob said...

manning's gonna take a lot of grief after this game, but his teammates have been shit.

Marls said...

This has to be in the mix for worst Super Bowl ever. Ravens/Giants, cowboys/bills, bears/pats, niners/Denver.

zman said...

The way we view QBs is bizarre. All three of Brady's SB were won win Vinatieri field goals. If Vinatieri missed any of them would Brady be a worse QB? Would Jim Kelly be better if Norwood made his FG attempt?

Marls said...

Bruno Mars for MVP.

Danimal said...

No qb in the history of fb would have won this for Denver. He will not IMO get too much if any shit for this loss.

Danimal said...

Bruno good. Like that whippersnapper.

mayhugh said...

While I agree this game is not Peyton's fault, I think there is no way that "this game tarnishes Mannings legacy" is not the most frequently used angle in the upcoming days.

zman said...

Forty-five minutes to score.

rob said...

you are wrong about the level of shit-giving that will occur, danimal.

and what am i missing about the 2-point attempt? that makes no sense, right? you need 5 touchdowns regardless.

zman said...

Going for two now lets you know what you'll need to do at the end. Barnwell explains it better, but you don't want to delay the inevitable until the end.

zman said...

Time Warner sucks.

Danimal said...

"Fuuck man. Why did I do that?"--Bob Dylan

Danimal said...

Floyd Mayweather has 10.4 mil on this game....more specifically the Broncos.

zman said...

Yeah, I guess no one told Dylan that Fiat owns Chrysler.

Marls said...

Eli 2, Peyton 1.

Danimal said...

Idiots will give Peyton shit. Talk show douchebags will make it the topic for the next week. But there won't be any mistaking that this performance was possibly the most dominant ever and that Peyton's performance had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome.

Clarence said...

You know the game's outcome is in hand when the majority of discussion is about legacy and MVP. Oh, and they show stats about the worst SB beatings.

Did anyone see this coming? Did any prominent columnists (outside of the Pacific NW) or talking heads go with Seattle in a blowout? The biggest margins of victory in history were Montana and Rice, Buddy Ryan's 46 and Sweetness, and Dallas' Big 3, ie foreseeable. This is fairly stunning.

Mark said...

Michael Bennett has been dominant up front for Seattle in this game. Greg Schiano didn't think the Bucs should re-sign Bennett this past summer. I hate Greg Schiano so deeply.

Marls said...

How long until the Seahawks are on probation with the NCAA.

zman said...

Eli sucks too.

Dave said...

i have no school tomorrow. it hasn't even started snowing yet. too bad this superbowl blows.

T.J. said...

Tavaris Jackson, SB winner.

Clarence said...

So for once, Dave, your whining was moot?

zman said...

I had no idea he was a Seahawk. Two former Bills get rings!

rob said...

jason whitlock called seahawks in a blowout today. he had it.

TR said...

CNN showing a Hoffman special. 10-11 PM.

mayhugh said...

Danimal, I think you are underestimating not only the propensity for over-reaction but the breadth of it. Or maybe I'm just supremely jaded by the media coverage of the Washington Football Team.

As it is, I would be more suprised if I DIDN'T see a column this week that questions not only Manning's SB performance but his entire career. I imagine somebody looking for an angle will put the following pieces together: Seattle made him ordinary/ineffective by putting pressure on him, he has only been good behind exceptional offensive lines, would he have been any better than Mediocre Quarterback X if he played behind a less talented line or with less skill at WR.

I feel bad for him, both for the loss and for the abuse he is going to take for the next week or two.

Marls said...

PSH, who essentially killed himself via a selfish act that left his children without a father will be feted as a tragic genius.

Payton Manning, who lost a football game will be run down as a loser.

America.

Marls said...

Peyton

zman said...

FĂȘted.

Marls said...

Fucking accent circonflexe...

Danimal said...

Yup, so flicking thru the channels this a.m. on way to work - "MAD DOG" guy was just blistering Peyton. His cohort was using my defense from last night, asking, "would anyone else have beaten SEA last night?" - other guy says, "well no, but...." But, you're right Mayhugh and Rob - I just don't agree w/it and believe that even HAD Denver won, these very people would have found some argument against Peyton being the shiznit.
