Snow Beaten, World Beats

One of the few benefits of yesterday's 14" snowfall was the opportunity it afforded me to pop in my earbuds and catch up on All Songs Considered while shoveling snow for two hours. We've sung ASC's praises in the past, so I won't belabor that point, but if you like music of all kinds, it's a great place to hear it.

The NPR Music team was recently at globalFEST 2014 at Webster Hall in Manhattan. They feature a broad range of global sounds on this episode of ASC, including an Australian Bollywood group, Afro-Caribbean carnival music, Ukrainian folk-rock, American-Chinese banjo jams, and Congolese-Belgian hip hop (as seen below - the artist's name is Baloji).

The episode also features Jamaica's Brushy One String, a singer with the most minimalist of accompaniment. Check him out:

You can hear the entire globalFEST recap here. Cool way to spend a hour or so. 'Specially if you're snowbound.

Chicken in the corn indeed. I better make a run to the florist this morning.

My bride & I do nothing on V-Day. No cards. No candy. Just our sweet love for one another. We do however leave for literally one of the best places on our planet on Sunday - www.palmettobluff.com
It befits the "if you have the means...." declaration. Or, in our case, if it's work related and you can go on scholarship for a couple days, then do so.

and on that note, whatever happened to "humblebrag" guy?

i'm shaving my soul patch as a valentine's day present to my wife. gonna miss that little bastard.

in completely unrelated news, i had sam adams' new rebel ipa last night. it's terrific. i don't generally dig on sam's product, but the rebel is a west coast-style ipa, and it's great. two paws way up.

Danimal said...

you should shave that thing on your face too.

rob said...

see, that's funny

My anniversary is two weeks from today so the wife and I are going to package the two together then. Gonna get some flowers though.

zman said...

We just declared a moratorium on V day. Everyone wins.

Local basketball team that we scrimmage (and beat) in the summers won again last night. First regional playoff victory in school history. Now 26-2 on the season.

Danimal said...

so is costas going to need a double eye transplant or what? geesh.

The other local team that advanced last night, Florida Air Academy (which has produced Sasha Kaun & Will Yeguette among others) had a guard score 48. Scoring 48 in a 32 minute high school game is ridiculous.

Richie Incognito's agent is resigning right about now, right?

Happy bday, Gheorghe.

I hope Gheorghe is downloading lots of free De La Soul to celebrate.

Mark - Cody Riggs may head to South Bend for his 5th year. Thoughts on Mr. Riggs?

Mark said...

W&M just got a commitment from a guy named Oliver. Sounds about right.

Mark said...

Riggs: He's tiny but a tough kid and sure tackler. He surprised me with his effectiveness as a safety after he moved there this year but his lack of height was an issue. Rumors are that he wanted to move back to CB as he knew that's what he'd have to play if he got an NFL shot. Too many good CBs at Florida right now though. Ideally he'll be your slot/nickel corner. Lacks great top end speed. He'd be a nice one year addition for ND.

Mark said...

He's Gerald Riggs' son.

So this is funny. My wife and I have always said that Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday not worth spending money and too much thought over. It's been that way for years, so I didn't give it a thought.

Oh, shit. That was my first wife. My new wife said this morning she has a cool gift for me. I'm hosed.

rob said...

mark - in what sport did oliver commit to the tribe?

rob said...

after posting the highest score in the first round of qualifying, loudoun's own ashley caldwell failed to qualify for the finals - finishes 10th overall. bummer.

Mark said...

The basketball, Rob.

Confusing one wife for another is a bad practice.

Mark said...

Things keep getting worse for Darren Sharper. Now suspected of rape in four states.

Danimal said...

thanks for the scouting report mark.

thankfully mrs. Clarence won't read this to find she was confused with the former.

and on sharper - why as an nfl player do you feel the need to drug the girls you're looking to score with? why would you not have someone else do it for you? (ba dum tsh)

rob said...

strugg-a-ling to find news of that commitment, mark. got a link?

rob said...

dennis - your brother and dad ever say anything about paul rowley? can he play at the d-1 level?

Mark said...

One of the CBB writers I follow on twitter mentioned it. Can't remember who but I did find this link: http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/oliver-tot

Big, foreign born PG it looks like.

rob said...

he's a 6'6" slovak - plays for their u20 national team. averages 9.5 ppg, 8 apg, and 5 rpg for a pretty good new england prep school. love the size. hope he can play.

rob said...

and he's got a last name rife with puntential.

Mark said...

Better name than the last foreign PG that Florida brought in. He was from Israel. His name was Nimrod Tishman. Nimrod didn't last past his redshirt freshman year.

rob said...

tribe's gonna have an interesting problem at point guard next year. they'll have nobody on the roster with d1 experience. tot joins a juco transfer redshirt and talented frosh who's been hurt all season.
