Today is the 321st birthday of the College of William and Mary, or the 300th Anniversary of the year when the College was old enough to drink. While the historians are a bit cloudy on the subject, it's generally agreed that the College was actually too busy studying to actually have a drink on its 21st birthday.
W&M is marking the occasion with a number of Charter Day celebrations, including the Alumni Medallion Ceremony, where newly installed FBI Director James Comey '82, LLD '08 will be one of three distinguished grads received the College's most prestigious alumni award.
And in keeping with tradition, the College will also celebrate its birthday with a concert. This year, the featured artist is...
Wait, that can't be.
Says here that Wiz Khalifa is headlining the Charter Day Concert at William and Mary Hall. That's among the least William and Mary things ever. This has to be a harbinger of good to come.
My sources tell me, though, that Wiz has been asked to change the lyrics of 'Work Hard Play Hard', as W&M students will be confused by the second part of the verse.

When I think of W&M I think of Wiz Khalifa. Their commonalities are too myriad to list.
Ralph Kiner is being memorialized today. Here is the GTB memorial to him, a flashback post from Misery Loves Company nine years ago...
that's some lazy shit right there. very gheorghey
Hey, the post I linked to has funnier stuff than I have written in years. It's much preferred.
do i have to fact check this post, or will someone else verify that it's real.
who else saw the flaming lips at trinkle hall? now that's a band that can nerd it up.
Am drinking a barrel aged peachwood smoked manhattan....old forrester, carpano antica sweet vermouth, bitters, smoked over peachwood and barrel aged. Up. It is the greatest manhattan I have ever had.
I think it was just you and Fitz at the Lips.
I never saw anyone groundbreaking at W&M. I saw REM there when I was in high school and Neil Young when I was enrolled. Buffett several summers. The Connells and Seven Mary Three. Waxing Poetics. Glue. Flannel Animals. Random Idiots (very groundbreaking, actually). Oh, and I saw Patton Oswalt do stand-up.
Pretty weak for a "college town" through five years of school. The Clash played W&M Hall in '82. I was born just a few years too late.
you should trust me, dave. when have i ever steered you wrong? alternately, you could click the link in the post.
Nirvana played W&M Hall my sophomore year and for the life of me I can't recall why I didn't go see them. My biggest live music regret. Cobain killed himself soon thereafter.
One of the many great things about going to Florida was the big budget that the student government had to bring in acts for free concerts. In the time I was there I saw Tribe, The Roots, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Busta Rhymes and Snoop.
DMB, John Mayer and numerous other soft rock types played free shows that I skipped.
I'm off to go watch the kids I scrimmaged this summer play in the district finals. Nothing like a Friday night HS basketball game to make you feel old.
Zman and I were partners in apathy back in the day. In addition to passing on Nirvana, I passed on Smashing Pumpkins and Tribe Called Quest. I did, however, spend $5 to see De La Soul. I barely got my money's worth.
And for the record w/ Superglue, they played at a highly vaunted Halloween party at the house my freshman year. Everybody raved about them. I think they opened the show w/ a Fine Young Cannibals cover. Less than impressive.
My two favorite Andrew Bynum movies are This is The End and Hot Tub Time Machine.
Watching NBC's intro to the Opening ceremony. Goosebump central.
I saw the Pumpkins (they stunk) and Tribe (they played three songs before the power went out and the show ended). De La was worth $5 (although they did NOT want to be there). I saw a good James/Soup Dragons/Black Sheep show at the Boathouse. This means I'm old as hell.
Best show in the Burg: Steve Hall and the Dimeslots.
Cliff Huxtable styled the US team.
I too was at that Tribe show - power went out, they were like "see ya". I of course had elected Popes Pius XI, Pius XII (1939-58), and Blessed John XXIII by that point, so it was fine.
Thailand!
I sw Tool at The Boathouse about 16 years ago. Good show, great venue.
Mark went to the Boathouse?? I woulda bet against. That's fantastic. Loved that place. Nothing good happened there when I was in high school, at least as far as my folks were concerned.
Ramones, Femmes, Steel Pulse, and many, many, many more. RIP The Boathouse.
I'm at a birthday party where one of the guests is a professional balloon maker. Professional. Balloon maker.
Kids' birthday party?
My first college was located about an hour from the Hampton Roads area. The town where my college was located was a one stoplight town. So we spent many weekends in either Hampton Roads or over in Greenville (ECU). I had some really good times in your neck of the woods, Clarence. Partied in Va Beach, at ODU and plenty of house parties in Chesapeake.
50th birthday. Elvis, beach boys, and complimentary balloon hats.
the bodeans opening for drivin' and cryin' at the boathouse was one of the great shows i've ever seen. driving to see the ramones and being so drunk we couldn't find the place was less great.
Mark, I did not know -- excellent.
Guys, I am doing the Polar Plunge in VA Beach tomorrow to raise dough for Special Olympics. And advice? Dave, I know you've done it before. I'd prefer not to die.
The team I went to see play tonight won districts. It was legitimately fun to watch them in the 2nd half. They came back from down 7 at half to win by 15. They played aggressive and tough in the second half and with great emotion. Good group of kids who I've gotten to know fairly well over the past few summers. Happy for them. A few of them saw myself and another guy who's scrimmaged against them the last few summers and were really happy/thankful we came to watch them and came over postgame to say thanks.
If the money wasn't total shit, I'd have loved to have been a high school basketball coach.
The school is called Chowan, Clarence. Now plays in the CIAA. When I payed there we played schools in your area like Christopher Newport, Newport News Apprentice.
At some point, every Olympic Openiing Ceremony becomes a light show at the planetarium.
Newport News Apprentice just christened a new building/campus in December. Friggin' spectacular. if I had sons I would tell them to be welders if they like stability and dollars.
in hershey, pa for my kidlet's gymnastics meet. in case i get busy tomorrow and forget, the tribe are 2-3 point dogs on the road against northeastern. though w&m has a much better record than the huskies, we've never won at mathews arena. it's a house of horrors for us. take the home team, give the points.
If you make the trip to watch that game, do not eat at Symphony Sushi unless you have a lot of Imodium.
I do not enjoy watching Austin Rivers play basketball.
Headin down the pub for Ire v Wales live from Landsdowne Road otherwise known as Aviva Stadium. Some believe the winner of this match will win the 145th holding of the Six Nations Tournament.
Ireland looked strong last week in thrashing the Scots while Wales were not so impressive just getting by Italy. I see 3 points or less in this one - hoping for The Lads in Green which likely translates to dagger last minute try from The Druids. Either way, some good craic and Guinness for breakfast is in my near future!
Rob, I'm in State College for my nephew's hockey game. If you can sneak up the road, the smithereens are playing here at 9:30.
I saw Biz Markie at W&M Hall. He did not play "Just a Friend" but he did wear a NY Islanders jersey.
Not only did I post twice from different accounts, but can't seem to delete one. Smooth.
I saw that bodeans show at boathouse too! And lots of others in high school, too, like you Clarence. Great fun-the times I recall! Would it surprise y'all to hear I quoted G:TB in a class this week?! How bout that?! For you lawyer types, I gave appropriate citation too
please share the wisdom that you quoted. this should be good.
Two things about last nights game I didn't mention. The starting SF is the son of a guy Greg played with in HS. He's a senior.
The backup PG is Farrakhan's grandson. Yep.
Donna, none of us wants to be appropriately cited for the shit we say here.
Clarence, as for your polar plunge, my advice to you is to have a flask and a good towel assistant at the ready. Also, if you are raising money for a good cause, it helps to let people know how to donate. You may be too proud to beg, but I ain't to proud to do it on your behalf. Just call me T-Boz.
Ok folks, let's put Clarence over the top. Maybe then we can get the 12th day of Gheorghemas...

Marls, thank you for the link to Clarence's and my page.
Point taken Marls!
But this quote in no way disparages or casts any negative anything upon y'all, or in this case Robert...
I read your sentence about why we watch/go to sports (from post on trip to Philly for bb games) in a new course I'm teaching this semester: Religion and Popular Culture.
It's very fun class actually. And we are talking about sports/athletics , the rituals, etc. at the moment. It's cool. Nerdy. But that's a given for what I do.
Anyhoo....a required assignment was watching the Super Bowl, too, which was a bit of a bust considering how that went this year, but interesting nonetheless.
Interesting requiring it, I mean!
you used 'carthartic yawping joy'? really happy to know that escaped into the wild.
correction: it was 'holy shit cathartic yawping joy'. please tell us you used the whole thing.
There's a Belgian speed skater named Bart Swings. I bet he comes from a long line of Belgian porn stars.
I'm cold.
what was the water temp when you jumped in?
My guess 53
1. I can't believe Wiz Khalifa played for Charter Day. Do you think the new Chancellor Gates stuck around for the show?
2. I remember a Tom Petty concert in W&M Hall my senior year. I also remember NOT being allowed to go to Wburg when the Police played there when I was in junior high. (Yes, I'm old.) Also remember seeing DMB in the Flood Zone in Richmond before they made it big.
3. Jimmy Fallon + Muppets + The Band = awesome

Who poked Costas in the eye?
That was great, Shlara.
I think Costas accidentally washed his face with that Sochi water.
i couldn't have fucked that w&m/northeastern analysis up any worse than i did. tribe led by 27 at the half, coasted to a very easy 12-point win. did not see that coming. neither did any of you. 7-3 in the league now. huuuuuuuge game against towson next weekend.
Costas has an eye infection and can't wear contacts.
Figure skater Ashley Wagner seems fun and a wee bit dirty. Camera caught her saying bullshit to her coach after her routine was scored.
We are all Yulia Lipnitskaya fans tonight...
that was ridiculous
Indeed. Always fun to watch the Olympics and see somebody do something jaw-dropping. People shouldn't be able to bend and spin like that.
FuseHD is showing Insane Clown Posse Theater. Basically an uber white trash version of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Kinda watchable b/c they are such sad and awful human beings.
I think I need to go to bed.
One more note on this show - hanging out in their studio is Greg the Hammer Valentine. He appears to be impersonating Mickey Rourke from The Wrestler, except it's real, he's fat and it's sadder than you could believe. He may be a regular.
Marcus Smart just shoved a Texas Tech fan. That was weird. And bad for him.
hey gheorghies!
primus/fishbone and iggy pop/halloween were my two favorite boathouse shows. that place is no more?
Magic Kingdom today. Give me strength. Patience. And patience.
good luck danimal!
FYI -- there is NO beer in the magic kingdom.
fulham score in stoppage time to steal a point at old trafford. points are huge.
what did marcus smart do to get everyone mad at him?
Read these comments
The NBA has to get flex scheduling. The first post NFL Sunday and they have one good team featured in today's ABC doubleheader.
marcus smart read these comments? sweet!
Nobody buys that the Texas Tech fan only called Marcus Smart "a piece of crap", right? Good.
scott hamilton looks more and more like our pal every time i see him. uncanny.
Missouri All-American DE Michael Sam just came out. He'll be the first openly gay NFL player. Good for him.
wow - that's enormously courageous. shouldn't need to be, but still.
My 79 y/o father-in-law just sent us this email. Somebody is living large, and it ain't me:
To All,
Just booked my trip to Marbella, Spain, about 30 miles south of Malaga. Will be there for three weeks and plan to visit Gibraltar one weekend, and Tangier, Morocco the other weekend.
Then return to Barcelona for the month of August.
We got a new DVR when we moved. I forgot to add True Detective to it until halfway through tonight's episode. Dagger. I don't want to wait until the 11 pm showing goddammit.
I assume he's going abroad to sow his oats?
Flipped over to the Beatles-ish performance. Yoko doesn't know the words to these songs. And here's yet another confirmation that Richard Starkey is the luckiest human ever to inhabit the earth.
They're playing Hey Jude and the camera cut to Sean Lennon. Wrong son, CBS.
And the mashup with Kanye ruined this song for me. We major?
Don't sleep on Starkey's tour de force work on Shining Time Station.
We Major is pretty good by itself.
Way late to the party, but egads, Zman. And I second Dave with the Fishbone & Primus show at the boathouse. Very good.
Being back at work sucks.
there's finally another post up
