A little break from the norm

And in a way, a little blast from the past. The next time you see a parent going nuts at a youth baseball or basketball game, riding the officials, riding other 10 year olds (no, not in the Gary Glitter way), just think, it could be worse. Much worse. That parent could've been this donkey:

BORDEAUX, France - A man accused of drugging his children's tennis opponents, leading to one player's accidental death, described being gripped by panic and anguish as his desire to see his son and daughter succeed spun out of control.

This guy makes Richard Williams look good. At what point in time does drugging your kids tennis opponents sound like a good idea? Who's giving this guy advice, Jim Jones? And not to harp too much on this, but the guy's fucking French, what the hell does he care about winning?

The best line in the article has to be the wife's response to all this. She said she had no idea her husband had gone off the deep end, but if she did, "...it would have been suitcases or the psychiatrist."

I'm pretty sure those exact two options have been bouncing around Larry Brown's head for 4 months now.

here's your handy-dandy pro-caa rooting chart for the day:

UConn over Syracuse - sorry, TJ
Minnesota over Michigan
Wake over FSU - FSU's probably in, but every little bit helps
Baylor over Colorado
Ole Miss over Kentucky - see FSU comment above
Wyoming over Air Force
Nevada over Idaho - need Nevada to win the WAC, because they're in regardless
USC over Cal
Georgia Tech over Maryland - as much as I like the Terps, this team doesn't deserve a bid, and Gary Williams needs to stop whining

F U Squirrel.

Ole Miss is a truly huuurting team.

Dennis said...

OK...
1. Cuse is in regardless - no way the committee keeps the Gerry/Jim B. drama out now
2. No chance Wake wins
3. Colorado is a lock to win
4. Kentucky is out
4b. Who cares about Air Force.
5. Nevada won't lose the conf. tourney
6. Cal=winner...
7. I like a GT upset here - if they could only play a full game for once. And Maryland can suck it. I mean, really get after it - balls included.
8. All told, Mason limps in and takes my natty lights...bamas.

T.J. said...

That nutpunch guy is still on my shitlist...

T.J. said...

Dennis, I see you skipped over the Michigan game...fear of Michael killing you in your sleep?

Dennis said...

Tom - you left my boy Kevin Pittsnogle off that list of dudes...and seriously, don't sleep on the super-frosh duo of Scottsman, Paulus and McRoberts.

Dennis said...

They still have a team up there?

T.J. said...

Oh, I left a ton of dudes off, which is exactly my point. SportGuy is a fucking moron is he can't ratttle off 20 "exciting" players to watch in the Dance. I try not to take the Lester approach and pummel Bill Simmons with a 9 iron, but then he goes and does stupid shit like that...

Dennis said...

I think maybe there's too much talk of the SG round these parts. I mean if we hate him, reading his stupid articles just to write about how terrible he is seems silly to me. We're only perpetuating the situation, yes?... The silent approach might be more effective - just let him fizzle into oblivion...

David Hasselhoff...being accused of spousal abuse... Is it really that hard not to hit women? Cause, from what I can gather from sports and celeb gossip, it is.

Geoff said...

With his best selling book and spectacularly popular web page, I don't see oblivion (Bolivian) in his immediate future. He is the most popular feature on ESPN.com.

T.J. said...

Yes, everyone should only read GTB and GTB-approved publications. And I don't remember seeing SG in our sidebar.

Speaking of moronic celebrities, Bruce Willis thinks we should invade Colombia:

And then maybe swing by Vietnam--surprise the f*ck out of them.

"You make a movie?"

"Not this time, pal."

T.J. said...

OK, that one got me...

rob said...

i don't hate SG, he just disappoints me. he was soooo good on his digital city boston site, and then he went and got all growns up. hey, i sold out, too - doesn't mean i have to like it.

and dennis, is your bet specific to mason, or is it just that 2 caa teams get in? because right now, i'd say hofstra's got a better chance than mason.

T.J. said...

I'm the Mason guy...more wagering perhaps? Mmmmm? Mmmmm?

Geoff said...

That bit should get you--I sole it verbatim from Denis Leary's stand up act about a decade ago...

Jerry said...

If you're lucky Jack will shoot George Mason in the leg with a tranq gun. Again.

Dennis said...

Just Mason. And, if I didn't know better, i'd say the Senator from New York is gettin nervous over there...

rob said...

tj's gonna shoot tony skinn in the knee. well, above the knee, anyway.

rob said...

here's a conspiracy theory for you - uconn's tanking to 'cuse to guarantee another bid for the big east. any takers?

rob said...

one more thing, gw needs to win the a-10, because it's a 1-bid league if they do. temple's not helping.

T.J. said...

There is NO WAY Jim Calhoun is tanking a game to Jim Boeheim...

T.J. said...

John Chaney just killed a man at halftime for going heavy on the ice in his fountain soda.

T.J. said...

Drew, please put the curtain back where you found it...

T.J. said...

Cuse Update - Up 8 with 14 minutes to play...and look at that, Terrence Roberts and Demetris Nichols are finally showing me something.

rob said...

drew, is that the case, or is simmons just tapping into our generational zeitgeist? are we aping him, or is he a product of the collective? not making an argument, just asking a question.

T.J. said...

Squirrel, you sound like that cult leader doing the radio spots for McLean Bible Church.

T.J. said...

I fucking did it again...the jinx is in. Tie game.

Mark said...

G-Mac again!! The Irish Assasin lives to fight another day (or five minutes).

T.J. said...

This is killing me...

Mark said...

Regarding Dennis' list:

No way is Kentucky not in. I'm not saaying they deserve it, just that they won't be denied by the committee.

'Cuse is in. Especially after today (win or lose).

Don't be so sure about Colorado. Baylor may suck, but this is also their tournament.

Mark said...

God, I hate working during March.

Mark said...

Are you kidding me right now?

T.J. said...

CUSE BABY

Mark said...

Does Mason get snubbed now that 'Cuse and (possibly) Temple are in? I could see the two bids going to Hofstra and UNC-Wilmington.

TJ: Did you know that Justin Cerasoli transferred to Ole Miss? I knew he wasn't at Seton Hall but I didn't ever hear anything about him enrolling at Ole Miss

T.J. said...

I think I am now losing the Mason bet, because of Cuse and the GW loss...but that's OK, because G-Mac and the boys are in. And after the nightmare that was the Vermont game last year, the '06 Dance will be a welcome reprieve.

T.J. said...

I just looked that dude up - apparently after his freshamn year he transferred from the Hall to Ole Miss and had to sit this season out.

T.J. said...

Drew, we're trying to enjoy the Cuse victory over here. Settle down analyzing the similarities between my hackneyed approach to "writing" on a goofy blog and a professional hired by ESPN to write (presumably well) for the masses.

Oh, the curtain thing - wasn't a shot at you Sensitive Sally, it was meant to be that you pulled back the curtain on me stealing SG's (and frankly every other guy I read) style. So I wanted the curtain put back in place so I could continue on my merry plagiarist way.

The movie reference is from a little-known film called The Wizard of Oz. It was done back in the 1930's, was a cult hit for some, and then faded in obscurity. It was an allegorical work that involved a chick from Kansas, a twister, a dog, some witches, a lion that sang, and some flying monkeys. Majorly trippy.

Total movie snob reference by TJ. Dick.

Whitney said...

AND . . . Bill Simmons invented that style like Al Gore invented the Internet. Conversational, well-informed, sarcastic discourse that involves a good deal of pop culture knowledge and a ton of sports trivia? Gotta be Simmons. Oh, and one out of every three males aged 25-35 with Internet access. And every conversation that took place in The Pit for my five years.

I liked his work and give him credit, I recognize some similarities in style, and I am unimpressed with the disproportionate rate of his recent output's quality versus the spike in his popularity.

Further, with every year it seems he knows less about sports, not more. The poke "SportGuy" is an exaggeration, but not by that much.

Whitney said...

Not a tool nearly so much as just another blogger worth ragging. Welcome back to Gheorghe.

T.J. said...

Yes, keep reading, because by my count you are part of the Proud 7 who visit this clusterfuck of a website.

Mark said...

Of course he had to sit the season out TJ. Ole Miss may be stuck (culturally in the 1950's) but it's still a Div. I school.

I rather enjoyed the appearance of G-Mac and the 'Cuse in last year's tourney. I'd go so far as to say that it was instrumental in my victory in the Grounds Crew pool last year. Thanks guys.

My beef with Simmons is that he seems increasingly detached from a large % of mainstream sports in America. Even with the sports he claims to follow, his overall knowledge is nothing short of unimpressive.

I heard something about that "Wizard" movie and some "Wall" CD being perfectly in time and fantastic viewing for those on mind altering drugs. I don't take drugs though so it was of little interest to me.

You know what's fun? Over-analysis.

Mark said...

Also fun: Highlighting you hair and wearing fancy suits.

the caa is getting fuuuuuuuucked. temple taking out gw hurts.

T.J. said...

All right, looks like Michigan and Florida State want to help the CAA cause, which is nice...I also want to point out how fraudulent Texas A&M is, despite the fact that if the beat CO today they are in. That team sucks.

Dennis said...

The wheels of my master betting agenda have been set in motion...Te quiero, Temple. Me gusta, Syracuse. Muchas gracias a todos...
