The Green Fields of the Mind, Among Other Colors

"What goes around, comes around" -- Beastie Boys

The human mind is a hell of thing. Mine took me on a journey this week, a detour down rabbit holes that enlightened and amused me. And so I invite you to take a trip with me to visit my beautiful mind and see what I saw.

I was reading a news story so forgettable that I've, well, forgotten it. The piece was illustrated by this starkly beautiful painting of a winter scene.

The piece, as it turns out, is entitled 'Winter Blue'. The artist? His name was Zoltan Sepeshy

I think you understand what synapses fired at that point. So I did some digging into Z Sep. Turns out he was a Hungarian-American artist of reasonable renown, serving as the Director of the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research in Bloomfield Hills, MI, a suburb of Detroit. His work was alternately realist and cubist, and his subjects were both pastoral and urban-industrial. This 1947 work, entitled Factory Rhythm (Back of Hudson Motor Plant), is more of the latter.

That painting lit up a different pathway in my mindtunnels. It reminded me a lot of the streetscape from this legendary video:

At roughly the same time, another brainprecinct weighed in with something for consideration, combining the two things I know about Detroit and art.

This work is entitled Sunday Neurosis. It's an early-ish work by Doug Malone, a Detroit-based artist and teacher at The College of Creative Studies, as well as a FOG:TB.

That's where this particular journey through my mindtunnels ended. I do hope you kept your seatbelt on, and that you enjoyed your trip.

Worlds Collide, You Write the Caption

Official G:TB muse (Gheorghe Muresan) meets official G:TB punter (Zoltan Mesko) and official G:TB tiny dictator (rob). Or something like that. I'll let you write the caption.

Official G:TB Punter Interns, Gets None

Remember Zoltan Mesko, official G:TB punter?

In a tremendous display of Gheorgheness, Zoltan got himself an internship at a private equity firm during the NFL lockout. Judging by the sound of her voice in the NPR broadcast, Zoltan did not parlay his status as an NFL baller into some summer lovin' with his cubiclemate. Which is also quite Gheorghe.

And now that the NFL lockout appears to be over, he shall continue to be our official punter in 2011.

Don't Mesko with the Zoltan

I understand that G:TB has never had an official punter. Until today. "What punter is sufficiently Gheorghe to merit this honor" you ask? Zoltan Mesko, New England's 6-foot-5-inch 231 pound rookie punter.

I received a deluge of Mesko-related texts and emails after the Patriots drafted him, and again last night after he punted the poop out of the pigskin. After a little research, our Doofus Overlord and I decided that Mesko shall be the first punter to receive G:TB's official endorsement.

I first learned of Zoltan Mesko when the zsister texted me this photo taken outside the Big House of her with a Meskovite:

I'm always enthused to find more Zoltans. A little yootoob research yielded some gems. Watch for number 11 in this clip.

Very Gheorghe, or at least very Zoltan. Here's another display of Gheorgheness.

Maybe that's more Zoltan than Gheorghe. How about this?

Sounds pretty Gheorghe to me. Go get your #14 Pats jersey now before they sell out.

Zoltan = Soul on Ice

Many women like to watch figure skating. With the Winter Olympics nigh upon us, you might end up watching figure skating with a woman. Maybe a woman you know, or maybe one you just met. Either way, you might want to sound knowledgeable, and you definitely want to find a way to keep it entertaining. To that end, I bring you Romania's own Zoltan Kelemen.

I will root for Zoltan for several reasons. First, he's Romanian (in fact, he's the 3-time Romanian figure skating champion!). Just like Gheorghe Muresan. Second, his coach is named ... wait for it ... you're gonna love this ... Cornel Gheorghe. Another commonality with Gheorghe! Third, he has a cool name. Zoltan. It sounds so out of sight its got the blind people lookin'. Sounds sweet and smooth like custard. Sharp like a razor, steady like a train. Like a man who knows where to get good gyulai - and how to give it. Like a man who can drink a case of Ursus without having to break the seal. Hirsute in places where other men are hairless. A man that all others envy. Fourth, he skates to funky music. He's soul on ice. Check it:

It seems like he falls down a lot so clearly he can take tons of pain. Tough as nails. If you fast forward to the 5:50 mark you'll see he's got a great poker face. Chicks clearly dig this man.

Don't be surprised if you're standing around the K-cup machine at work and you overhear a bunch of young ladies gasping that "Zoltan is soooo sexy!" Normally they'd be talking about me, but during this twenty-first Winter Olympiad, they just might be talking about Zoltan Kelemen. Be ready for it.
