ReplyDeletein family news, my wife's cousin just touched down at dulles, and is on her way to our house. she told my wife via text that the trip out of the middle east was "some argo shit". so i'm anticipating quite a story. very relieved that she was able to leave the region.

ReplyDeleteIn addition to the plethora of unpleasant news, I get to deal with 'teacher drama' this weekend.
ReplyDeleteMy wife has been at her school for 22 years. A few years ago, she was part of the selection committee to choose a new school director. They ended up choosing an internal candidate who moved from middle school teacher to director. Aside from loving to claim the title of "Executive Director", this person shows little interest in running the school, often showing up late, skipping IEP meetings, or 'working from home'. The staff at the school is collectively disappointed, but most just grumble amongst themselves.
About 10 days ago, the board chairman sent a letter to families informing them of a tuition increase to ensure that they can pay competitive salaries to recruit and retain teachers. That landed poorly with staff, and she was one of a few who shared their thoughts with said board chair. The letter did not ask for any remedy, but tried to inform school's board of how the letter was received by staff.
Board chair eventually sent a reply, then told other members of the board to ignore any comments she makes, as they are motivated by personal animus toward the new director. This is an absurd claim, and not true in the least. She cares about the school and its' students an irrational amount, and resents the director for not doing their job.
To make matters worse is that said board chair is a fratre of many of us, from the class of 99. Now I'm hoping to see this joker so I can set him straight, and perhaps suggest that some degree of oversight might be wise to make sure someone who has never run a school is at least taking steps to learn on the job. Nearly two years in, and the new regime rivals the trump administration for self serving incompetence.
