Fusion Ain't Just for Oppenheimer

Been a minute since we posted about ground-breaking food innovation/disgusting culinary adventurism. That one tipped the scale of intrigued to explosive vomit well towards the latter. This week, though, as I wandered into my local Giant in search of coffee grounds near closing time (because you wouldn't like me in the morning without caffeine), I saw a sign advertising this:

For the layperson, that's the Hissho Sushi Bahn Mi Inspired BBQ Roll. And this time, I'm very intrigued.

I love Banh Mi sandwiches. Even crappy Banh Mi tastes good. The best of it will transport a soul to French Vietnam, minus all the inconvenient colonialism and such. I had a sublime version from a food truck in the District back in the day, and it's hard to beat the stuff you can get in and around Eden Center in Falls Church. (Note to self: been a minute since we went to Eden Center - maybe should work on that.)

I also love sushi, barbecue, and Jack Daniels (hard to tell by the picture, but the roll includes Jack Daniels' pulled pork). I really don't see how this can miss.

Usually, we'd assign this to The Marls, our Director of Culinary Extremism. But I don't have anything better to do, and I'm willing to take one for the benefit of the Family Gheorghe.

Watch this space for updates, and wish me luck.

has anyone noticed that both g:tb and sentence of dave are getting lots of pageviews from Singapore? apparently, it's a buttload of bots from Singapore, reading our blogs?

we should invite Cane Lover for a final drink

that's not a funeral, it's an opportunity. you can see it, can't you? gheorghe: the bar rises like a phoenix from the ashes!

Teej, I assume the Times is closed now... or are they open until it sells?

Just checking if I need to come have one last day of drinking there...

Whitney said...

Never mind. Reading is fundamental. It's open.

I'll need to get there before too long.

"This is an ideal opportunity for a sophisticated operator to renovate and redesign the space."

[Looks around at all the sophisticated operators here.]

z, I consider this more of a sade space... so you'll find more smooth operators here than sophisticated

I like that song but never understood the lyric "coast to coast LA to Chicago."

She’s from Nigeria. Cut the woman a break on American geography. Look how we do on Worldle when it’s a central African country.

zman said...

She could take a page from zmother-in-law and look at a map. I still don't understand why she doesn't understand that's cheating at Worldle.

fulham drawn against norwich in the third round of the carabao cup. gtb derby!

If I had made alternate choices in life, worked a lot harder, parlayed connections, climbed the corporate ladder, and concentrated on material wealth instead of simply amassing the best of friends to make me cackle all the live long day… welp, I would buy the Times and make it Gheorghe: The Bar. As it is, let’s go drink at Kelly’s IT there one last time.

i think both are possible. i plan to win the powerball this evening. next step: profit. next step after that: liver transplants.

in completely unrelated news, the nebraska women's volleyball team are playing omaha in front of 90,000 people in the huskers' football stadium. it's completely awesome.

In news nobody gives a damn about, I ambled into my favorite bar tonight only to find that they once again, after nearly a decade of not doing so, sell one of my two favorite beers. (They’ve been serving Guinness for a while.)

Doug E. Fresh spotted in the stands at the US Open. Seems like a Zman sandwich, though he may be too young to enjoy The Show.

Rob’s a winner

92,003 folks watching a women's volleyball game at memorial stadium in lincoln. the largest crowd ever to watch a women's sporting event of any kind in all the world. ain't that something?

Active day in these G:TB streets.

The “hurricane” canceled the flights of the Italians that have been haunting me the past couple weeks so we had one last dinner together. Predictably, dinner was served an hour and a half late. ‘Twas a good time though. Side bonus: I think my kid has as little patience for Italians as I do after this experience. Raising her right.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I plan to freak out about Florida-Utah for the next 23 hours.

now i'm trying to figure out which bar didn't have dale's. shucks?

Sons and I drove from NN to Boston, moved kid in and started drive back home from Sun-Wed. It’s a long way! Oldest drove us over GW Bridge in NYC. The number of cars in NJ/NY is insane. He’s also reading the parking book (thx OBX Dave), so noticing all the empty lots everywhere taking up space. Second son moved into a brownstone house as his dorm on tree-lined street in Boston next to the Charles River. Rough life! He’s gonna like it there. Got to explore Boston together on Tue. It was terrific! Crashed at friends in DC/MD last night, so last leg home this morn. Oldest returns to UK on Sat. Two kids launched for big adventures—yay!

i could swear i've had a dale's at shucks.

caroline wozniacki is married to david lee. those kids are gonna be a whole different species of athletic.

Forgot to add — we listened to music up/back and chose appropriate tunes approaching major cities/states…
Very cool and fun!

Lee and Wozniacki have been together for quite some time. I love the elite athlete couple combo kid potential. Serena and Lavar Arrington would've been an all timer if they lasted.

And Rob, they stopped serving Dale’s some years back. But they brought it back and made sure I knew.

Just so there’s at least one correlative comment, I have never had bahn mi. At least I don’t think so.

OBX dave said...

Whit, you should remedy that. Couple of well regarded Vietnamese joints near you, I think -- one on W. 21st, another on Monticello.

was i supposed to share those? man, my bad.
