Courtesy of John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, this message via Twitter crossed my timeline this morning:

And so we shall jam his tremendous music today:

  1. i feel like durant's second half last night was him finally getting fed up with the noise about him "not having a killer instinct" or whatever nonsense and saying "fuck y'all. watch this shit".

  2. Zoltan Kodaly is great but he's no Gabor Presser.

  3. Speaking of celebrating the Z, I overheard the following conversation between zkids shortly following the death of one of zcats:

zson: We have to wait for Parsley [zcat #2] to die before we can get a dog.

zdaughter: No, we have to wait for Daddy to die before we can get a dog.

zson: I don't want to wait that long.

  4. I watched second half of the KD game. His awesomeness swelled as the game went on. Play after play after play. The announcers were on it, the crowd was on it. Really fun to watch.

And it’s worth noting that Nash went to a really small lineup, forcing KD to be the 5 on defense. Nash needed all that greatness from KD to win. And he got it.

  5. At least Zkids didn't contemplate offing you in order to get a dog. They seem invested in your longevity.

I couldn't keep my eyes open to watch KD's greatness last night. Too many nights of four hours sleep catching up with me.

  6. rootsy, you actively choosing to sleep only 4 hours a night? if so, why my man?

I would never be able to function after just 4 hours of sleep

  7. Just happenstance. Was supporting our 82 year old friend on his hike. Airbnb ended up an extra hour away from where I thought it was. Had to have coffee on at five and make the 1-1.5 hour drive before eight. I’m sleeping normally again now. I fared better than I thought I would.

  10. Congrats to your squad. I'm working on a post about my weekend adventures with Nomad, living life fully, and treasured old friends. Look for it in 2022.

  11. zman: I'm going to the doctor.

zdaughter [in a hopeful tone]: Are you going to get a shot like Simone [zcat I just put to sleep]?

    zman: Not today.

  14. over the span of the past three weeks, i've been served in restaurants by whit's daughter and my own. far cry from their first restaurant experience, when we laid their car seat carriers side by side on the floor of cowboy cafe.

  16. I’ve rather enjoyed the experience of our daughters slinging drinks our way — and making some money doing it. But yeah, it’s a million miles from the days at the ‘Boy with our little ones in tow. Which, if you recall, made us feel old then, compared to the Cowboy Cafe nights of our early 20’s when we were the ones spitting up and soiling ourselves.

  17. When I was 12, my parents hosted a party at our house. My dad's best bud was a caterer who wanted to get some photos of their operation in action. I was deputized to be the bartender. That's right - a 12 year old bartender. They showed me how to make a couple of things (Gin & Tonic, etc), and let me go.

One of the catering staff (now a respected family counselor) asked me for a cup of Wild Turkey. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, so I filled the yellow solo cup to the brim with brown liquor. When a storm blew in an hour or two later, he was soaking wet and dead drunk in our mudroom.

The moral of that story is: Don't let your pre-teen kids bartend your party.

  18. The combination of individual brilliance (Lukaku and DeBruyne) and team chemistry/excellence on Belgium’s second goal was something the behold. They are so fun to watch when they’re clicking.

  19. In other sports news, the 76ers were pretty much the opposite of Belgium last night. Just an ugly mess on offense. Seth Curry is a nice player but when you’re relying on him as your crunch time initiator you’re in real trouble.

  20. The Tarlek news sits very ill in this corner. Dammit, man. Nothing makes much sense any more.

  21. I need a refresher on why Zman is out on dogs.

Unrelated: My kids baseball coach (I was an asst) asked the wife and I to play kickball. We agreed. It sounded fun (and is) but come 6:30 on a Thursday pretty over leaving my house.

  25. If things play out as I suspect they might in the weeks ahead, I may live 15 mins from Boulder, 20 mins from Denver and 2 mins from the wide open foothills.

And FWIW, we canceled our mid-June Denver trip. Not enough inventory to justify a family trip.

  28. made my first foray into a legal greengrocer this afternoon. our budtender was very helpful to us neophytes.

  29. I’ve never done the “legal” thing. It’s all medicinal down here. Have tentative plans for Vegas in August though that coincide with NBA summer league and you really couldn’t sketch out a better few days for me.
