Grudging Congratulations

The Blues certainly earned that Stanley Cup title, so here's to them:

Phish knows what time it is:

Bruins looked slow and disjointed last night. (Which could describe me most days) The Blues kicked their ass.

Some days the blues kick my ass.

rob said...

not entirely sure what game squeaky watched. bruins dominated the first two periods and had way more scoring chances. just couldn't get anything past binnington. blues were the better team in the third.

Is Gloria a St Louis song?

Whitney said...

Both Phish and Vampire Weekend paid tribute to the St. Louis Blues’ Stanley Cup victory on Wednesday with respective live versions of Laura Branigan’s 1982 synth-pop anthem “Gloria,” which the hockey team used this season as their post-victory locker room song.

Whitney said...

Steely Dan did a version of “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” and wrote and recorded “Deacon Blues.” That medley would have been appropriate.

TR said...

They should’ve played a cooler song, like Deep Blue Something’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Whitney said...

I like that song more than I should

rob said...

i remember the film

and this comment strand is all the hockey news i will ingest until next year.

Laura Branigan vid = cutting edge. The slow motion at the 2 min mark is gold.

zman said...

They should've played "Ante Up."

zman said...

FWIW, my 5-year-old daughter loves "Gloria."

Whitney said...

It was 1982, Danimal. Video technology advanced a lot in the next decade. Case in point: Timmy T.

Thanks Whit. Helpful

Just when you thought Koepka's hat game couldn't get worse.

rob said...

i'm pretty pumped for this game. and i'm tired as fuck and have been all day. take the under on how many minutes i last before i fall asleep.

TR said...

Alas, DraftKings did not have a line on sleepy squirrels. But I did take the Warriors giving three. Not feeling great about that right now. Steph needs to wake up.

I also got Koepka +1100 and DJ +850.

one of our cats had dental surgery today. the vet prescribed a painkiller that turns out is 30x stronger than morphine. given how painful it was to pay the $1200 the procedure cost, i might take some of those good drugs for myself.

I’ve been at one of the Universal resorts all day (Loews Pacific) for the first of a free three day work trip that my wife won. Had to schmooze a bunch of people at a reception this evening. I could go downstairs and have some beers at the bar whilst watching this game. Better yet, I’m gonna sit in this room and sip whiskey after a few the wax pen I hit when I went to grab ice.

TR said...

Sonja Curry...still fine as hell.

Mark said...

Klay Thompson is damn superstar.

The injuries in this series have gone plaid. This is dumb.

Whitney said...

At a karaoke bar in Virginia Beach. A girl is singing deep blues something breakfast at Tiffany’s. Its awesome.

TR said...

That song got some run back in the day. And as I recall, I think we all kinda liked it.

Except Zman and Rootsy and Marls, who were musical elitists. Actually, I think most folks hated it and three of us played it over and over to annoy them. And to rock out.

rootsminer said...

I can indulge that song in a good ol' hate listen, but then I'm annoyed that it's stuck in my head. In fact, it's in my head now. Thanks guys!

rob said...

that song is a huge 'music as memory' trigger for me. when i first started dating my wife, i was listening a lot to a mix that my sister had made for me. it included 'breakfast at tiffany's'. heard that song a lot driving from my house to my then-girlfriend's and back. i'll always have a soft spot for it.

rob said...

on a different note, is it possible to simultaneously believe that toronto earned/deserved that title and that they wouldn't have won it if kevin durant was healthy?

Whitney said...

Of course. That's the kind of discussion/debate that used to occupy our afternoons in the Pit.

...and what also occupies daytime ESPN networks that are extremely hard-pressed for content and who are like we can't believe we have several networks of sports running 24 frickin hours a day and are you serious wtf do we put on all day so we might as well have Colin Cowherd and Skip Bayless and all the rest of the mouthpieces hash out an unproveable, impossible to definitively settle topic for 5 to 30 minutes a pop.

Danimal said...

I am a horrific singer, but that didn't stop me from making an ass of myself at the coolest karaoke bar in Nashville, and maybe the universe, a couple of weeks ago. Really whiffed on the song choice...chose to go with something no one could sing along to.

Played a quick 9 this morning and playing Sun. Father's Day does not occur enough.

Danimal said...

Stayed in a newish hip area - Wedgewood Houston....the karaoke bar ...Santa's Pub....cash only, $2 beers, and a makeshift double wide trailer. Whitney...it is your spot.

rob said...

so now we all have to guess danimal's song, don't we? it wasn't 'friends in low places' or 'you never even called me by my name' or 'breakfast at tiffany's'. i'm going with 'careless whisper'.

Top Songs with Meals in Them

5-Piece Chicken Dinner - Beastie Boys
Breakfast in America - Supertramp
Dinner Bell - They Might Be Giants
Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

Breakfast in Bed - Mayer Hawthorne
Breakfast in Bed - UB40 and Chrissie Hynde
Dinner and a Movie - Phish

Worst:

Whitney said...

We can sing along to Careless Whisper!

Danimal, it sounds ideal. I'm in. The karaoke bar in Va Beach last night is such a cheesedump but it was great. Our friend Vicky is in town and asked to go. She crushed some Jovi and we dueted Looking Glass "Brandy." I took the Man in Black's rendition of "Hurt" for a mediocre spin.

Whitney said...

"a song no one could sing along to"

Hmmm... "Billie Jean"? Because people saw the documentary? (Don't.)

Gonna need more of a hint.

rob said...

'black coffee in bed' should count, whit

zman said...

Dan said Wedgewood. Heehee.

Whitney said...

That's a good one.

Also, this amused me:

zman said...

What about Live at the BBQ?

zman said...

I meant that as a good meal song, not a sausage song. Although I guess that works too.

Danimal said...

No one could sing along to cuz the song I picked, though not obscure to us, was never a big hit. The album was their debut album - 1983. I think at least a few of us - the older fellas, know just about every song on the album.

rob said...

danimal sang 'crazy' by patsy cline

Danimal said...

But whippersnappers who comprised 3 out of 4 at Santa's Pub, seemingly had no previous exposure to said band/songs. They have now though!

Danimal said...

Whit dog is going to guess this by noon. I think.

Danimal said...

the album will be guessed...probably not the song

rob said...

danimal sang 'catapult' from murmur

T.J. said...

Danimal sang “Dancing Street” off Katrina and the Waves debut album

Danimal said...

Not a bad album guess Rob, but wrong. TJ, bad both ways.

Robbie - I should have you know we began using a Thomson Reuters product this week - Contract Express. Congratulations.

Danimal said...

It's not a country song in case you're thinking that genre

rob said...

i hope you were thinking about that while you were singing 'kiss off' by the violent femmes.

zman said...

When Doves Cry? It's Raining Men?

zman said...

Like a Virgin? She-Bop?

Danimal said...

Rob wins absolutely nothing, but did guess both album and song! And before noon. Way to go Roberto!

Whitney said...

Seek and Destroy off Kill 'Em All? Not likely.

TR said...

Not a song title, but “chop your breakfast on a mirror” from Metallica’s Master of Puppets is a bad-ass verse in a badder-ass tune.

Whitney said...

Wow! Awesome job, Robbie Robb.

Whitney said...

They do it all the time, yeah, yeah
Yeah, they do it all the time, yeah, yeah

That should've been an excellent karaoke choice, D-train. The crowd could sing the yeah yeahs and get into it... Lame.

TR said...

My last karaoke was January 2012. Wife and I are w/ the kids at an all-inclusive in Turks & Caicos. We found out the lobby bar in our building was having a karaoke night. We did the “put the kids down by 9 and then quietly drink wine” thing for a while. I became overserved and my wife became underwhelmed. She went to sleep. I charged down to the bar and put my name/tune on. A couple rednecks got a big response to “Take This Job and Shove It” right before me. I went up next and did When You Were Young by The Killers with 110% effort. Crowd did not buy in. I knew and doubled down, passionately screaming to the strangers. Song ends, nobody laughs, I pass the mic back and walk out of the bar. For four minutes, I was a superstar.

The TR experience in a nutshell.

Danimal said...

I got 'em going a little bit on the chorus. Comparatively though, it was just a little light.

We’ve been at Volcano Bay since 10 am. Orlando in the summer is the land of bad tattoos. It’s a nice water park though.

Whitney said...

I’m still laughing at TRaoke

Danimal said...

I wanna party with that guy. And all you others too.

Shlara said...

I had that cassette tape Danimal--loved it
And I think we all need to have a karaoke night with TR soon

TR said...

Amid his epic trail walking, Rootsy joined Zman, Me, Los Hermanos Carlos and some others (I think) in a bizarre karaoke night in Manhattan. Was ‘97 or ‘98. I remember we had our own room and I crushed Patience by GnR. Not a party tune, but a fun one to bellow. Bad musical decisions were abundant. I remember very little.

rootsminer said...

I have a vivid recollection of TRaoke doing G’n’R “Patience” in Manhattan in 1998 when Zman drove out and drove dirty hiker trash ass into NYC for a little dose of culture. He was truly feeling it that night.

rootsminer said...

I think jspec was there too. I know we ate at Katz’s, and I truly appreciated the holdover pastrami they give you when you order.

I’ll confirm that you crushed it, except for the whistling.

zman said...

I think Whip It and Summer Wind were involved.

Whitney said...

hi gheorghies!

T.J. said...

Sounds like Gheorghaoke needs to happen
