Today marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the Beastie Boys' Ill Communication album. For my money, and that of many critics, the video for Sabotage from that record is the greatest video ever released.
If you've got 14 minutes and 30 seconds or so, watch this documentary about the years that led up to the record, which features an interview with the surviving Beasties. Really cool stuff about Yauch's awakening as a person and about how much fun the group had together. They set it straight, this Watergate.

Nathaniel Hornblower is one of the greatest random pieces of pop culture of my youth. So stupid, yet so great.
I spent a fair amount of time in Virginia Beach in my late teens. I’m sick. These shootings aren’t ever stopping in this country.
As a kid, my dad took my sister and me to Williamsburg and VA Beach two times. I had very fond memories of playing in the surf there for hours and hours. And of convincing my dad to let me buy fireworks. I thought of Whit when I heard the news of the shooting. I was coaching a travel baseball game at the time and had to compartmentalize my feelings. Beyond shitty.
In much lighter news I watched the Beasties clip. Good stuff. And holy hell, Money Mark looks old.
my daughter just told me she thinks we should have more police in schools rather than arm teachers. i asked her why we needed to do either of those things. she said that she doesn't want to get killed. and i understood. which was sobering as fuck.
mark's right. this isn't going to stop. we've decided as a society that we're okay with the death toll.
Between both kids, I have a total of 4 travel baseball games, 2 rec baseball games and 1 travel soccer game this w/e. Will help me avoid thinking about all this stuff. Scotch will help too.
We spent the day in VB with friends who just moved here. Took kids out of school and had a great time at Adventure Park (ropes course and zipline place). Then we heard what happened. Friends we’re with live 3-4 miles away from site. I grew up here in VB, too. Just heartbreaking. And events like this will just keep on without campaign finance reform. When we did nothing after Sandy Hook, I believed that would be true, and turns out, it is. F—ing crazy! As a nation, we are lost.
The amount of security at my kids elementary school immediately following Stoneman Douglas was a bit shocking. The school year ended yesterday and, along with report cards, we received a letter informing us it’s going to be significantly tighter next year. Buy all the guns you want though.
Maybe it’s cowardly but I’m glad I’m a virtual world away in the Outer Banks. Selfishly hoping I don’t know anyone who was murdered. The awfulness abounds. I love you people.

Was going to post about the USA men's rugby 7's potentially winning a world championship this weekend. And while that seems impossible in my mind I had high hopes for them. But these continual mass shootings keep reminding me of the truly systemic shit that is wrong with the USA.

A 6th grade kid on my rec team told an ump to fuck off after a called third strike. Easy way to get ejected. Sixth grade boys are a mess. Puberty is crushing them and they’re all trying to feel their oats.
I look back on the amount of time my Dad spent coaching me and my friends of that age and I am awed by his patience.
We rented an oceanfront hotel room for the weekend that’s less than a mile from our house. It’s a frivolous use of money but it was a well worth it. I type this whilst sitting on a 7th floor balcony overlooking the ocean. Stay cation is an annoying phrase but it can be a cool thing.

it still boggles my mind that people didn't love "paul's boutique" from the start. you wouldn't know it on the third floor. that was the soundtrack to sophomore year.
I didn’t like Paul’s Boutique from the start. Of course, I was only in 10th grade. But I was a microcosm of a lot of the country. I loved the sloppy party rock vibe of Fight For Your Right, didn’t have sophisticated taste, and was confused that I wasn’t getting more of that sound.
But that album is epic, start to finish. I think it didn’t click until college. I played Shadrach at the gym today.

Spirograph is no different at age 45 than it was at age 5--maddeningly difficult to use and completely unsatisfying even when used without a hitch.
Between the all-out war on women's rights and the never-ending gun violence, I've reverting to sticking my head in the sand. Which isn't good.

Wife and I went out on a date last night. Went to something called "Don't Tell Comedy" show. Basically it's the stand-up show in a secret location and they don't tell you the comedians. We ended up in a small fitness facility with about 75 other people. Comics were great but it got toasty by the end. If they have it in your town it's work checking out. Best of all it was BYOB.
