Talent, Also Filler

The Pixies inspire a wide range of emotion in the alt-rock community, mostly because of the high expectations they set for themselves with their early work. They haven't released an album since 1991's Trompe Le Monde, which, honestly, was okay. But it wasn't Doolittle.

So many albums weren't Doolittle, as it turns out.

25 years later, Black Francis and Frank Black and all the rest of the gang, sans Kim Deal, have finally released a new record. And this conflicted alt-rock kid kinda digs the new single, 'Talent'.

And it's not Doolittle, but "Motorway to Roswell" is one of my favorite Pixies songs.

It is a good day for the Red Zone. Dallas and Wash game looks like one of the good ones from yesteryear. Ben the rapist is just plain good at quarterbacking. And It is so nice to be sitting on the couch today.

alfred morris scoring for the cowboys against the snyders kinda makes me happy. but only kinda, 'cause they're still the cowboys.

Speaking of red zone, if you have any interest in seeing the Jags offense, you won't see them there.

I think Gus Bradley may lose his job soon.

Danimal said...

Mark, I just came on here to say, it's probably a bit premature to ask who is going to replace Gus so I won't ask.
God awful play calling. Defense. Clock management. Another year of Jaguars football in other words.

My boy has the jags qb coach's kid on his flag football team after having him on swim team this summer. They're becoming pals. I told him not to get too attached.

You know it's bad when the red zone breaks to the game to show a 20 yard Bortles to Robinson pass play. Yoo hoo!

170 coaches have coached at least 50 games in NFL history. Gus Bradley ranks 169th of those 170 with a career winning percentage of .240.

Is that bad?

But he's a great guy Mark. Lots of energy. Shit like that.

Von Miller is good at football.

So apparently I am going to The Cult concert tonight. Hi, Dave.

Clarence said...

And The Cult was good.

Clarence, that's a little surprising at first take. Did they sober up? Might have to add them back onto the 'see live again' list.

Clarence said...

I think they've been sober for a while. Lots of bottled water on the stage last night. No booze.

They have always played a short set, and last night was no exception. But they sounded good, Ian and Billy were into it, and it was well worth the $28 ticket (mine was free, though).

NYC is a hot, hot mess of epic proportions. They're officially shutting down sidewalks (in addition to entire city blocks). Sirens are everywhere and stressed-out officers from every organization possible are around w/ hands on holsters. Add in the rain and grey weather and bombing-induced paranoia and you have a shitty Monday up here.

headed to vegas tomorrow for a conference. plan to make some stupid prop bets. anyone got requests?

Mark said...

A week late on a Lamar Jackson for the Heisman prop. I'll take Florida and the points over Tennessee though.

Chili Peppers and Trombone Shorty. Intriguing. Not playing DC, unfortunately.

i'm staying at caesars palace. i had no idea it was this gigantic. it's like the size of caesar's...palace.

They have gambling there.

If our ryder cup team was an underdog, which for some inexplicable reason they are not despite the fact they are favorites every single year of the event and then lose in great fashion, I'd say bet some $'s on them. But since they are favorites, I probably would stay away from.

Betting on a "draw" is giving about 10-1 odds, so there's one for ya.

You could bet on NFL Regular Season MVP...Lots of choices. Blake Bortles is at 140-1 so, there's that. Just have some fun Rob. You deserve it.

Before long we might even get some white guys kneeling on the sidelines. Jeezus.

Yeezus.

Sitting in Toronto, 3 blocks from the Air Canada Centre while the USA plays Canada in the World Cup of Hockey. Can't find the game on the hotel tv. Come on, Westin. Lot of hot Sweden women walking around the lobby with their drunk husbands happy after the victory over Finland.

Bonus travel tip. Fly Porter Airlines into Toronto if you can. They fly into the island airport right next to downtown. 2 minute ferry ride or 10 minute walk from airport to downtown.

My new work office continues to give me lots of good celebrity sightings. Since I saw Venus walking her dog, I have seen Clyde Drexler walking w/ his wife (shorter in person than I expected; his wife is pretty in a Michele Obama way), Angelique Kerber posing for photos (cute, but has some muscle) and Bobby Flay. I saw Bobby tonight. He was allowed to walk on a sidewalk that was closed off b/c of Obama. Fuck that. He was with a blonde who I didn't recognize. He was suited up and looking dapper...but so was I. They stopped next to me on a street corner. I almost congratulated the woman for being w/ the second best dressed man on the corner. But I didn't.

Not gonna lie. Bobby is a handsome man.

TR said...

Porter is great. Free snacks in the waiting area at Toronto, Squeaks! Fill up!

(Although I think that's b/c so many winter flights are delayed)

he's no bobby moynihan

rob said...

squeaky nor flay

Bobby Moynihan got married this summer. His wife is a very attractive Broadway actress.

With Taran and Jay Pharoah off of SNL, that's more crumbs for himself SNL. Life is good for that guy.

Marls + Mrs. Marls joined me for a charity trivia event tonight
It's Trivia for Cheaters, and thanks to Marls's crafty brilliant cheating strategy, we won the Cheaters Cup.
It will be proudly displayed at the Homecoming tailgate this year.

Marls said...

It was a great night for an even better cause. Glad we could be a part of it and cheat our way greater children's literacy. Can't wait to defend the title next year.
