Because it makes me anxious and a little bit agitated to see the same content at the top of G:TB for more than a few consecutive days, here's an inside joke for three:
And yes, I'm seeking professional help.

my kids know of the southern ocean. i think that means that they're better at seeming educated than many new jersey educators.
ReplyDeleteSteve Hyden's list of best track 1 side 1s does not appear to include Rusty Cage, which is to say it appears to be inaccurate.
ReplyDeleteI will have to check it out.

Questions....
I see he also omitted "Punks, Lies & Videotape" from the Young Black Teenagers. Horseshit.
ReplyDeleteIf you read his rules, he only counts debut albums. Badmotorfingerblaster was not a debut album.
ReplyDeletePeter Piper is from Raising Hell which isn't a debut album but it's in his Spotify list. Same for Superstition which was made pretty far into Stevie Wonder's career. I'm pretty sure Michael Jackson was making records before Off the Wall but Don't stop till you get enough made the list. I realize it's just a fun exercise, but Rusty Cage is a glaring omission for a music critic in his late 30s.
ReplyDeleteYou are both right. His "list" includes debut albums only. "Hard Times" and "Rhymin & Stealin" would've been good.
ReplyDeleteHis Spotify playlist includes all of the songs he mentioned, and it omits "Rusty Cage." And "Wildflower," "Jagged," "Gimme Shelter," and others, though no list could ever be complete.
And it feels like we covered some of this ground on Gheorghe in 2009.
ReplyDeletemy kids also knew of the southern ocean . . . the times they are a changin'
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Hyden excluded rap albums from his article but not his Spotify list. I'm too stupid to figure it out. I would've included "Poetry," "Excursions," "Jimmy James," and "Sure Shot" if I wanted to prove I'm an old man who likes old hiphop.
