Half a Century, Wholly Missed

Today, December 15, 2016, would have been Evan Lloyd's 50th birthday.  Man.  That woulda been some throwdown.

For the uninitiated, though you've certainly heard this guy's name tossed about here and there. . . Evan was a senior in Tribeville when Rob, Dave, Hightower, Dougie Fish, and I were freshman idiots on the same hall, and he took us under his wing right away.  He ushered me into his fraternal family, then grad-ee-ated and went off to Hokie Land, at first to become an Art Vandelay style architect; then, when the mini-recession of the time hit, his fate was to move into construction management.  Anyway, his subsequent tours of booty in Arlington, sLower Maryland, and Atlanta included stupendous episodes of utter dipshittery.  As a rule.

In the early to mid-nineties, Ol' Ev -- or Earl, as he was called by some -- helped found both the Magnificent 7 keg croquet extravaganzas (7-person teams competed at croquet and had to each finish a full keg) AND the Santa Stumble bar crawls; he himself turned each of these marvelously intoxicated events into all-timers on an annual basis because of audacity, puckish humor, stubborn dedication to arbitrary, silly regulations he'd impose, passion for friendship, and his genuine article sense of humility and wonderment at the world and the comrades who populated it.

Homecomings, birthday outings, Springsteen shows, NASCAR races, Ohio State football losses -- any reason to hope in his red Dodge Ram and drive 8 hours would be more than cause to be there in fine form, cases of Pabst in tow (pre-hipster-resurgence).  God bless Evan Lloyd, he loved me like a little brother and I'll not know his like again.

Today, on his 50th, I'll drink 50 beers for him.

Okay, fine, that's not feasible, even for me.  Whatever I do, I'll do him proud and salute him all the way.  I already put the Ev-dent into every can of beer I consume, total force of habit at this point.  I'll incorporate more of the many Evanisms into the night's activities.  Where did I put that croquet set?

Here's to Ev.  May those you love linger longer than he, but may they impart upon you nearly as much entertainment and appreciation.  Or, as he would borrow from Quint, "Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged women."

I'll close with two emails sent from the man himself, one for whom technology like electronic mail was a passing lark.  The first is simply goofy Evan, the second is one of the more bittersweet things I keep handy.  Here goes:

Howdy Fellows,
Here goes my first LammieNet transmittal.  'Tis nice to be here (on the net, that is, not in the Dekalb County Public Library which is my closest computer since some lowlifes broke into our job trailers and swiped our computers). Although I haven't the time to get on here much, I've enjoyed reading your recent rants and will try to pipe in when I can.  Yes, Mr. Softie, I said 'pipe in'.

I had a swell time in the 'Burg last weekend.  Surely y'all noticed whose family had the best showing and hung the toughest.  That was my family.  In fact, between Gym Bitner, myself, Whit and Rodell, our clan showed some 30 years of alumni status, 24 of which was still up & at it at the house at 4 AM. Quick-Draw Mo Lester didn't last near that late, but everyone there surely noticed how skillfully he shoe-horns 20 hours of drinking into 14 hours of consciousness.

Those current brothers were alright.  At 4:45 when I left, they still had some 30 cases of beer in the cave shitter and were breaking shit like ceiling tiles and the commode on the bar, AC/DC loud and proud.  Nice collection of young chicks, too.  Surprising, in fact.  My favorites were the knee-socked, pony-tailed little girl costumes - about 4 of them and way hot hot.  Another thing I enjoyed was the fact that Unit L is no longer Sigma Nu, but full of girls, yet at 6@9, the brothers still fence off our back porch turf - Lord help them if some coeds should walk through.

Now, the point of my writing:  The 5th Annual Santa Stumble will take place on December 11th in Richmond. This is probably the most unique and amusing gala I know.  It was started by Chris Blake, VA Psi 1989's younger brother Doug (whose maroon neck makes Chris look like a fargin' preppie) in '95 with 9 igits in Santa suits staggering bar to bar.  It has steadily grown (like kudzu in Mrs Tell) to last year's 122 and is truly a joyous time.  Some establishments like us, some simply don't.  A few arrests about every other year. Past Lammie participants include Stewbacca, Lester, Overton, Elmo, Spoid, Squirrel, Gormley and Saunders.  They'll surely recommend that the $25 Wal-Mart seasonal costume investment is all worthwhile (and re-usable - this'll be  Stumble #5 for my chirp-stained, cigar stanked uniform). We meet at a bar in the Fan called Easy Street, where the owner donates a few kegs, and then a bus or 2 takes us downtown.  It's cool.  Elmo one year was late, missed the bus, yet easily found what bar we were in because the DJ on the radio told him where we were.  The bus takes you back to Easy Street at closing time; it's pretty well organized.  I'll report later on the exact free beer meeting time.
Merry Christmas,
Earl

Hello Friends...Welcome to the Final Four

Tonight, Jimmy Nantz, who for a major media figure has questionable taste in women (eg. the woman he cheated with and then married), will welcome folks in homes and bars all across America to North Texas, home of this year's Final Four.  This annual ritual is the first leg of a week long CBS/faux nostalgia/Nantz sporting orgy that, for me at least, marks the true beginning of spring.   Screw that vernal equinox thing, it is not until we reach the Final Four, see "One Shining Moment", and take in "A Tradition Like No Other", that spring has finally sprung.  After this winter, I can't wait for the coming of our new Easter Bunny overlord.

"I, and the Heritage Foundation, fully endorse Creepy Easter Bunny for president."
That brings us back to tonight's event, the NCAA Basketball Division I Men's Semifinals, AKA the Final Four.  While most of us will be watching as long as we can stay awake, some folks actually root for one of these teams and care beyond how the results might affect their chances of winning the office pool.   For them, today is a day of nervous energy and heavy drinking due to fandom largely predicated on the college that they attended or the fact that their parents had sex and gave birth in the state where that school is located.  With that in mind, and since I have no idea who is actually going to win these games, let's break down each fanbase to select a winner.

7 UCONN vs. 1 FLORIDA: (6:09 Tip-Off, clearly there is a frat guy at in charge of scheduling)

Today is going to be a long day for G:TB member Mark fretting about his Gators before the early evening start time.  I felt bad for him for a moment until I realized that he will be spending the day in a beach bar, getting drunk outside.  F that guy.  That said, I hate UCONN so I will be a Gator backer for at least one night.  As for the break down....

Student Bodies:  The Preps vs. The Ladies of the SEC

VS.

This one was rather easy and predictable.  Tanned coeds always beat pasty white guys in dockers.

Non-Alum Fans: Hedge Fund Douches vs. Jorts

VS.

This one was a tough call, but I have to give to nod to the dudes crushing Natty Lights.

Wild Card: A guy who thinks he is God vs. A guy with God on his side

VS.

Geno Auriemma may be the best basketball coach in Connecticut (and the most likely to tell you that he is), but Geno ain't coaching tonight.  I'm going with Timmy and the good Lord.

Winner:  Hot chicks, Jorts, Natty Lights and Jesus?  How can they lose?  Florida in a land slide

8 KENTUCKY vs. 2 WISCONSIN  (8:49 Scheduled Tip-Off)

This battle matches one of the most storied programs in college basketball history against a state that loves cheese.

Student Bodies:

VS.

This was a tough one.  Not much to distinguish one from the other.  Maybe this is unfair, but I'm gonna take the fat guy in a Santa suit over the folks with a history of institutionalized racism.  I think Big Gheorghe and this guy would agree....

Non-Alum Fans:  We might need to nuke these folks from space....

VS.

My father lived in Wisconsin for several years while I was in college.  Each summer I would go visit and was stunned by the fact that even in June & July all people talked about was the Packers.  Nobody really cares about the Brewers, the Bucks, or the Badgers.  On the other hand, all Kentucky has is college basketball & some horserace.  Gotta give this one to the Cats.

Wild Card: Ashley Judd vs. Thornon Melon

VS.

Everybody knows that Ashley Judd is a huge Kentucky fan.  What you may not know is that the University of Wisconsin was actually the setting for Back To School's Grand Lakes University.  As much as I love me some Ashley Judd, she (like the rest of us) is getting a little long in the tooth.  I'm going with Thornton Melon as long as Derek Lutz does not break up the pep rally to protest US nuclear policy.

Winner:  I'll take some of those fuzzy things you cheer with and pick Wisconsin to win in a squeeker.

Rumblin', Bumblin', Stumblin'

A brief history lesson for you...
  • 1995 -- A band of 18 idiots decides to dress up in Santa suits and go bar-hopping in the Fan neighborhood of Richmond.  Our chum Evan Lloyd is a large part of the brainstorm behind this.  Our other chum Stew takes part and tells Rob, me, and others about it the next day.
  • 1996 -- We travel down from DC for the Second Annual.  55 Santas.  Outstanding.
  • 1997 -- 128 Santas.  Two buses.  Bedlam.
  • 1998-2000 -- more of the same.
  • 2001 -- Evan dies on a Harley in July.  At Christmas time I use grief counseling constructively and orchestrate a Santa Stumble in my U Street neighborhood in DC.  We take $20 a man and donate it to Toys for Tots in Evan's name.
  • 2000's -- Our group launches satellite Stumbles in NYC and Truckee, CA (that still carry on even in 2012).  And other places like Norfolk, VA (which fizzled, alas).  And we see other Stumbles pop up all over the place that have nothing to do with us.
  • 2010 -- Our friend Steve Wiley and his wife Sofia launch one in Raleigh, NC.
  • 2011 -- The Raleigh Stumble takes the giving to new heights, sending not one but two children with leukemia to Disney World as part of Make-a-Wish.  Pretty friggin' awesome.
  • 2012 -- The Raleigh chapter does the same with one child going to Pittsburgh to see a Steelers game and meet Antonio Brown, his favorite player.  (This happened before the Stumble, like two weeks ago.)  The second child is slated to go to Disney.
  • Also 2012 -- How can I resist that story down in NC? At the last minute I dust off the old suit and break out the makeup and drive three hours and drink Narragansett beer and tequila and Jager and Fireball and bourbon and Jameson and random other shots and get blackout happy and sing carols and dance and fall down and laugh and revel and spread good cheer.

Kudos to the Wileys and the rest of the Raleigh group.  The Stumble is still a damn good time for a damn good reason.   Enjoy the progression of this year's slow descent from Gene Simmons Santa into The Dark Knight Returns and Orders the Meat Lover's Omelette AND a Side of Chicken Fried Steak at IHOP at 4AM.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and here's to new memories with old friends acting young.

Ho-Ho-Ho.

Don't be frightened if you see this gentleman strolling the streets of DC tonight...

He's simply partaking in an age-old Christmas tradition, the Santa Stumble.  Along with dozens and dozens of his friends (or a baker's dozen if we're lucky).  Danimal, Mark - if you want to hop on a flight here's where you can meet us:

5-7, Stetson's
7-9, Big Hunt
9-11, Lucky Bar
11-???, Mighty Pint

I simply assume zman, TR and marls are cruising down the NJ Turnpike already geared up right now, and rob gets off work at the toy factory right on time to join us as well.

I'll do my best to pop in the comments later with some unfunny and probably very drunk witticisms (much like this entire post here).  Lucky you.

"Happy Holidays...is for terrorists.
Merry Christmas from Avery and Jack"
