We've seen some things around here, my friends, gustatorially speaking. We've eaten the KFC Double Down. We've chowed our way around multiple state fairs. We've tried (and enjoyed) pizza-flavored vodka.
The G:TB Taste Team has been handed another challenge, should we choose to accept it.
Pringles are great, though not part of my regular rotation these days. Don't eat a lot of chips of any provenance, really. And I do love a dill pickle - I eat at least one a day. I can take or leave vodka.

ReplyDeleteRob not liking vodka (discovered, at least by me, on this year’s fishing trip) perplexes me. Not entirely sure why. It’s vodka! What people who don’t need to taste the booze drink.

ReplyDeleteWhit, I get your larger point about vodka, but I would argue that good vodka has a taste, and not just orange- or vanilla-flavored or whatever varieties. Certainly more subtle than whiskys and tequilas and various brown liquors. Perhaps more "notes" or hints of flavor than obvious, easy-picking ingredients.

ReplyDeleteI saw that. Pretty incredible achievement, even with the loads of help he had. The question now is whether my dear old friend Nimblewill Nomad tries to reclaim the record in 2029. He thinks not, but even he's not sure.

ReplyDeleteBTW, big props to Pablo Torre. He broke the Kawhi Leobard/payout story, endured an assload of pushback from Ballmer and his PR machine and kept reporting. Prompted NBA investigation that ultimately cost Clippers five (!!!) first-round picks and $30 mil. Granted, $30 mil is a bookkeeping stroke for a dude like Ballmer, but picks and suspension are to be taken seriously.

ReplyDeletehad a fairly detailed dream that involved several gheorghies last night. sharing the highlights here in hopes that someone can interpret it. a large group of us were headed in two cars to a coastal destination. it was raining. jersey dave was driving a large van that had a working sail on top. we stopped at a roadside stand for something. dave drove up the gravel road and tried to take the turn into the parking area with too much speed. his vehicle subsequently rolled several times.
ReplyDeletewe ran to the crash site, where dave and whitney were injured, along with several teenagers, provenance unknown. we gave first aid, and all the injured parties recovered miraculously.
fogtb matty ro and i negotiated with the farmer who owned the stand to buy a new car at a favorable price, at which point the entire area flooded up to our knees. an old woman (reminiscent of the role carole kane played in 'the princess bride') tried to sell us aftermarket gadgets, and when we declined, told us that there was too much flooding for us to make it to our destination. we scoffed at that notion.
and then i woke up.

ReplyDeletehave been following the leonard story since day 1 and am fairly pleased with this outcome. though, wasn't it a couple of weeks ago that i read the nba determined there to be no foul play in its findings? was that too, a dream?
ReplyDeletethat was, as obx dave would likely tell you, the league desperately trying to spin the story. the reporters on that story are good ones - the source is likely never gonna be believed again.
ReplyDeleteHow is that the league trying to spin the story? They cam out right away and said that the Athletic article had numerous inaccuracies and the came out with this punishment in rather short order.

ReplyDeleteyour colorado buffaloes start their 4th season under coach prime this evening on the road at gheorghia tech. jackets came from behind to beat the buffs in boulder last year, 27-20.
ReplyDeleteThe disconnect between the mid-August ESPN piece on the Clippers/Leonard and the fact that the NBA hammered them a couple weeks later appears to be more a problem of story framing and editorial judgment than shoddy reporting.
ReplyDeleteWithout getting too deep in journalism weeds, the reporters largely got the facts correct and described the back-forth between investigators and the team. What ESPN mucked up was suggesting that punishment would be light because there was no finding of direct wrongdoing by the Clippers, that they merely facilitated outside money to Leonard from sponsors who already worked with the team, a not uncommon practice.
It's also possible that a month ago, the league (read: the other owners) hadn't yet decided how heavily to smack the Clippers. The Clippers may have simply concluded that punishment would be light and floated that notion to ESPN's reporters. Might have torqued off enough other owners that Team Ballmer was trying to get out ahead of and spin a favorable outcome. It was also revealed that relations were testy between investigators and the team, which was often pissy and uncooperative as the law firm tried to gather info. Also may have contributed to severity of punishment.
One more thing: not unreasonable to wonder if punishment was cumulative, not only for the Clippers' attempt to circumvent the salary cap, but also a slap at Ballmer for the ham-handed and stupid, easily traceable path he and the team took in this case, giving people a look behind the curtain at how business is conducted.
Officiating already off to a terrible start. How the returned fumble for TD was reversed due to a premature whistle, without a review or explanation is curious.

Explanation provided…that’s a rule that needs reviewed. Early whistle not reviewable, even when egregiously early.

ReplyDeletecolorado is really good at self-inflicted damage. they commit more unforced errors than any power five program in the country. there's undeniable talent on the field, but it's not coached well. says here coach prime needs to be "promoted" to ceo and an actual coach should be hired. i've made this argument before. i am correct.
