Amazing

When the long history of the United States is written, yesterday will stand as one of the more remarkable days in a journey filled with them. A day filled with joy, with pain, and redemption. We're far, far from perfect, but we continue to follow the moral arc towards justice, peace, and grace.

It was an amazing day indeed! And really an amazing week, and that in the wake of the horror of the event in SC! And I find this cool...that reference of your last sentence, about the moral arc toward justice...I assume (we know what happens when you assume stuff of course!)...that quote is attributed to MLK, jr. regularly- that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice- but actually it was originally said by an Unitarian pastor who was an active abolitionist working to eradicate slavery...pretty cool, right. That's some story in a story stuff happening there!
And the USA wins against China. All around good day!

Yesterday Rob asked for an analysis of Obergefell v. Hodges. Here's a good one from the always brilliant Erwin Chemerinsky:

This much less brilliant predictive analysis of US v. Windsor hits all the high notes too:

erwin chemerinsky kills it in the club

Chemerinsky runs the trap.

chemerinsky slicing and dicing the dissenting justices so cleanly they never even felt the blade:

Not surprisingly, the four dissenting opinions all accuse the majority of undue judicial activism and usurping the democratic process. This is always the dissent’s charge when the majority strikes down a law. Of course, none of the four dissenters seemed the least bit concerned with deference to the political process or avoiding judicial activism when two years ago they all were part of the majority in striking down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act that had been passed almost unanimously by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush.

and damn, zman, that was some dropping of science. that doma piece is going in gheorghe: the book.

Chemerinsky runs the jewels too.

Kid's soccer tournament in the rain - yay.

This is cool. It's uncool to note that they did not let the flag touch the ground.

Pretty Lights is one of my favorite artists. Kind of a trip hop/electronic combo. Live set on XM/Sirius Electric Area right now.

You are looking live at Point Pleasant Beach NJ for a week of fun in the sun (well rain currently) with the fam. Hit us up Jersey peeps for any musts on the North Jersey Shore!

I grew up two towns away, Mr. KQ. Lobster Shanty and Wharfside are good divey seafood joints near the Point Pleasant Inlet. Europa South on Arnold Ave. is a good Portuguese spot. There are other good places to eat/drink on Arnold.

Brave New World is a great surf/clothes place in Point if you or the missus want anything.

The town of Brielle is five minutes away. There's nice outside restaurant/bar called The River House. I had my wedding reception upstairs in the inside building. Good for an early evening cocktail or three.

You can head five minutes south to Bay Head. They have a nice shopping area.

Remington's in Manasquan (10 mins away) is a nice restaurant.

Parker House in Sea Girt is a legendary shore bar. If you go outside of peak hours (Fri/Sat/Sun dinner), eat on their porch and get sliders.

As for the big Boardwalk bars in Point Pleadant, if you're over 25, you're too old for most of them on Fri/Sat nights.

If you're feeling adventurous, drive 20 minutes north to Asbury Park. Town (at least near the beach) has transformed into a bizarre, beautiful hipster area. Top picks here are Watermark for cocktails (sit outside on upstairs terrace) and Cubacan next door for some of the best Cuban food you can eat. Asbury is a very fun town to roam thru (especially Cookman Avenue). But be forewarned it's a very gay-friendly area and the boys around go nuts on the weekend.

More summer related help needed. My sister's family is going to Kitty Hawk for 10 days. Any local recs? Where is Tortuga's?

rob said...

tortuga's is a milepost 11 on the beach road. be forewarned that if they go there, they won't want to go anywhere else.

but if they do, the outer banks brewing station is a fun spot. awful arthur's is a longtime stalwart. good breakfast and solid bloody's at the jolly roger, but be prepared to wait. don't go to carolina seafood - they let me cook there, and let dave wait tables without bathing.

Dave bathes?

Mark said...

Towns where these places are located, Rob?

rob said...

it's all basically the same place, but tortugas is in nags head and the other two are in kill devil hills.

mr kq said...

TR cheers mate now THAT is some knowledge. Will def check out and report back after we party like it's 1999 with the fellas in Asbury.

Mark - Henry's diner/fam restaurant approx. mp 7ish, best breakie on the beach. And 2nd on OBX Brewing Station. I'd also add Blue Pointe Grill in Duck for best food in whole area.

rob said...

this thing on?

Whitney said...

OBX:

Rundown
Food Dudes
Goombay's

Fish Heads for a beer on the pier up at MP 18

Sam & Omie's for breakfast. Jolly Roger has gone downhill over the last 20.

Blue Pointe is awesome but if she's in Kitty Hawk don't bother f-ing with Duck/Corolla/points north. The traffic ain't worth it.

...but Tortuga's wins out easily. Get there early.

Whitney said...

People also like Good Life, Chili Peppers, Bad Bean Baja Grill up in Kitty Hawk.

Don't go to La Fogata. They fogata our order. We fogata that they also fogata our order last year.

rob said...

sam & omie's is indeed better, but it's a hike from kitty hawk, no?

The Bad Boy reunion on the BET Awards just now was a lovely stroll down memory lane to 1996/7 and some good times at Casa de Pi Lam.

Mark said...

I'm still in Ormond Beach and not going back to work until Wednesday so tonight in no way feels like a Sunday night.

I'm a little bummed I forgot the BET Awards were on tonight bc it's my sneaky favorite Twitter night of the year.

pete and elda's (also known as carmine's) is the best pizza on the jersey shore-- it's in neptune, so close to point pleasant. take a ride to asbury and walk around ocean grove and go to the biergarten on the border of asbury and ocean grove. ocean grove is weird and scenic and the biergarten is an incredible structure with tons of good beer and a really great rooftop view. they've also found some people with german accents to work there, which creates some nice ambiance (but the bouncers are african american . . .)

also, i saw karl towns play my school the past few years, and while he was really tall and a smooth athlete, and a good shot-blocker, it's wild that he is the number one pick-- it's not like he scored thirty points a game in high school (i know tall guys like him are a commodity, but still . . . east brunswick beat them twice one of the years he played and then lost in double overtime in the county finals to them).

Beach access in Point Plez = $9/day/person. No break for teens, no weekly rate. I blame Christie. Jersey y'all!

TR said...

Jersey Shore beaches pay a lot for beach access. Funds the lifeguards and rent-a-cops.

Point Pleasant can be a gnarly town, Mr. KQ. Moose outside (or the thousands of meatheads on steroids) should've told ya.

Bay Head (to south) is much nicer. Manasquan (to north) also much nicer. Unless your thing is fat guys w/ bad tattoos. If that's your thing, you're golden.

TR said...

I mangled my point (as I usually do). Point Pleasant is awesome if you're a dad and you wan to let your kids want to go apeshit on the boardwalk, w/ the arcade, games, mini golf, rides, etc. But it's a place that gouges the tourists for sure. The other towns are more chill and better suited for discerning adults.

I once puked up a ton of pizza at Pete and Elda's, splattering some pepperoni onto the cowboy boots of the guy using the urinal next to my toilet of choice. He was not enthused.

bradley beach is my favorite north jersey beach town. just enough on the boardwalk, decent little town, and flat beaches with tide pools-- good for collecting shit and skim-boarding.
