Tradeoffs

Marriage, as most of you know, is often an exercise in compromise. At the moment, my wife and I are negotiating a couple of reasonably big ticket expenses. She wants to go to on a cruise with a girlfriend. That'll cost around $1,000. I have no issue - I like her friend, I don't really want to go on a cruise, win win.

I do want something, though. I've had my eye on this artwork by Malcolm Bracken for some time:

Kinda hard to make it out in this low-fi photo, but it's a stylized and highly-textured Jackie Robinson jersey. Blacken is the former strength and conditioning coach for the Washington Commanders' previous iteration. His work is really unique. And a bit pricey - this particular work is going for $1,200.

My wife doesn't share my obsession with covering every inch of every wall in the house in the first place, and 12 hundred bucks strikes her as a bit much for art.

I may have found a place where we can meet in the middle.

Finally, after a year, Jerome Brouillet's photo of Gabriel Medina from the 2024 Summer Olympics is available for purchase. I can get a high-quality 16x24 print for a cool $450. Do I even need to ask permission for that kind of purchase.

Don't answer that.

  1. It's easier to seek forgiveness than permission. Buy them both I say.

  2. if you were my wife and you came home with that, i'd give you a $450 beatdown. then i'd give zman a $1650 beatdown.

  4. In the words of a good friend after he survived cancer (and still is 10+ years later), delayed gratification is for suckers -- buy them both! And your wife gets her trip, too! But I'm having a week where heavy, tough things are happening to all our friends and their loved ones, so that's probably influencing my response. Because I'm curious what the writers on here will say, can something be "really unique" or is it simply "unique" as things go?

  5. Donna, sorry to hear about trials of you and your friends. Your faith strikes me as equipping you well to handle.

To your language question, "unique" solo suffices, imho. "Really unique" is kinda redundant, though that and similar phrases have worked their way into everyday usage.

  6. Unique is like grace. You either have it or you don’t. Unless you’re bigly unique.

  7. i don’t like “really unique” and whoever wrote this was probably in need of more caffeine and an editor.

  8. I preemptively took some of the advice on this comment thread. Last Friday I had my youngest kid drive me up the mountain to the town of Floyd to procure a beauty of a fretless banjo from an old musical mentor of mine.

  9. And rob, you absolutely spring for the surf print, no hesitation. The other print probably requires a little more negotiation.

  10. Hope the writer availed himself of more coffee today! Y’all know I know the usage of “unique” right — I did go to some decent schools. Teehee
Re: USOpen Golf, thought it worth a mention that the winning end was pretty darn cool. In our house’s view anyhow.
And t-minus 9 days before son and I are off to Scotland— woot! Daughter currently in Italy having an incredible time.
What are y’all’s predictions for NBA Finals now??

  13. inter miami just beat porto in the club world cup. as far as i know, that's the first time an mls team has beaten a club that's won a uefa champions league title. porto's done that twice, most recently in 2004. porto made the round of 16 in this year's champions league. that's a pretty epic win for miami.

  14. Based on reviews, I had the music doc The Wrecking Crew on my list. Based on GTB comments, I watched it. Loved it. Fascinated and enlightening. Hundreds (or even thousands?) of songs you know had this ultra-talented group of musicians laying down most or all of the the music. With no credit given. Watch it.
