I am famously a former fan of the Washington football franchise. [Did he say famously? Forget it, he's rolling.] Even went a couple of seasons without watching more than a handful of NFL games. But while I'm not likely to return to rooting for an NFL franchise, a confluence of factors have me at least interested in the league more than I have been in recent years.
Obviously, the departure of the odious Dan Snyder and the Pigpen-esque cloud of scum that hung over everything he touched was a significant event as it relates to my feelings about the local franchise. And my family-driven affinity for the University of Colorado's football program brought the game closer to the top of my rooting mind.
But of late, there's something else that's captured my interest and attention. I think Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels might just be the coolest player we've ever seen. I don't mean "cool" in the Joe Namath, Joe Burrow, Clyde Frazier sense, though he's got some of that. I'm talking more about the way Daniels' makes every move look unhurried, effortless, and controlled. Smooooth. Extra o's intentional and obvious. Nineteen games into his NFL career, and dude is out here with a heart rate lower than a Florida iguana, current state.
He doesn't just look the part, he's putting up plaid numbers. In the history of the NFL, rookie starting quarterbacks have recorded three games where their team had no turnovers and no punts. All three of those games happened for the Commanders this season. Those three games engineered by Daniels are more than Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, and Patrick Mahomes have tallied combined in their careers.
Daniels' 891 yards rushing are the most ever by a rookie quarterback, and his 69.0% (nice) completion percentage is also tops amongst rookies all time. He recently surpassed Andrew Luck's mark for the most total yards in a season by a rookie, playoffs included. He's completed more postseason passes than any rookie in history, and he's six yards short of the rookie playoff record in that category. His back to back games completing more than 85% of his passes in weeks three and four of the season marked the first time any passer had ever done so. In the first four games of his career, he set an NFL record for highest completion percentage over that span - for everyone, not for rookies. I could go on, but Fairbank has commandeered all of the research interns.Jayden Daniels has the makings.
So consider me a fan. Of the man. I think the Iggles have too much for Washington this afternoon, and I placed a wager to that effect. But it wouldn't break my heart to lose that bet if it means Jayden Daniels becomes the first rookie quarterback ever lead his team to the Super Bowl.

I’ll be hoping to catch some of today’s action from a hotel room I can escape to during an all day dance competition.
It’s our kid’s first foray into competitive dance. We’ve watched him in countless productions, but the dance meet is a different vibe entirely.
been there, rootsy. i recommend drinking.
Fortunately we got a room about 200 yards away from the venue. There’s a cheer comp here too. The smell of hairspray in the hotel is quite strong.
Good luck to Rootson and good luck to the Commanders. Our boys will need it. Philly might be the best team in the league.
Of course, I said the same about Detroit last Saturday. I’ll say this for Jayden. If this team can keep it within one score late, and the ball’s in his hands, I’m going to feel strangely confident.
Heading to Pensacola later today w/my son for his first college visit - U of West Fla. Will be confined to the radio for game 1. I'm picking the team from Washington, straight up.
Second day of a volleyball tournament in Winter Haven. Last game (of 3) ended at 9:15 last night. First game at 10 this morning. Next one is at 1. Possible game at 3 if they win at 1. Not looking like I’ll see much of today’s first game between volleyball and the two plus hour drive home. Kid’s playing great though so there’s that.
saquon!
as a long-time diehard eagles fan, fuck the commanders.
in other news from central jersey, a bunch of us are heading in to new brunswick to see louis ck at the stress factory, a tiny comedy club. apparently he's trying out some new material and wanted a low stakes venue. we lucked out and got tickets.
i think harvey weinstein's got a new one-man show opening up, too
Well done Rob! Yes JD is bringing fun back to DC. Love it
Dave has gone full heel
profited on the commanders' implosion, at least. super bowl's gonna be...man, i dunno. not what it could've been.
No joy in Mudville. Or Gheorgheville.
'cept for the eagles/louis ck fans amongst us
big day for the eagles/louis ck fans! they both crushed . . .
Sitting in a meeting where (because we are quasi government at the workforce council) we are having to meticulously eradicate DEI from everything we do and post. “Shameful waste of government funds” is why. And exactly what this is. Bleh.
To quote the great Dewey Cox at his nadir : "Goddamn this is a dark fucking period."
We rolled back from Raleigh this morning after our kid's first dance comp. I'm glad that he's only doing a few of these this year and didn't get into this part of the dance world earlier.
That said, he did win a couple of first places, one second and one fifth.
Congrats to rootson. What does he think of dance competition? Enjoy, or something he just thinks he should do? Art for art's sake, as opposed to the horse race and where you finish, and all that. Is judging completely subjective, or are there certain compulsory moves or routines that dancers have to hit?
Congrats to rootson!
If you provide services to the federal government you can now get hit with a False Claims Act complaint for your DEI initiatives. I fear that this will cause some companies to only hire white men so they can say "No DEI here!" And I guess that's the point.
Dave, he's never been interested in the dance comps, but the place he's studying encourages it, and it's a good opportunity for exposure and networking.
Since our kid is one of few who can partner with some of the less diminutive dancers, he's being worked pretty hard in the partnering realm. He's progressed greatly in partnering, and we can see the influence of Rolando Sarabia Jr., a teacher he worked with a lot over the past 10 years. He didn't learn a lot of advanced partnering from him as a kid, but you can tell he watched Rolando very closely.
Congrats to the GTB kids for all their great achievements! Perhaps the Eagles are the only team that can beat KC. I sure was hoping the Bills would win yesterday. As for the gov't shenanigans and such...I felt compelled to use the event that happened with Bishop Budde last week in my sermon yesterday (because it directly connected with the passage!) and had one person walk-out before I even got the story out and made my remarks, and after service another speaking to me about how offended she was because I mentioned "illegals" - a word I did not use. I corrected her with the word, "immigrants"...OMDL! GFG, friends.
Put in my notice today with the current gig. They have asked to meet tomorrow to discuss a counter offer. Highly doubtful I'll accept but maybe they can blow me away.
Good luck, Mark. May they blow you away!
Get some, Mark. And a much belated congrats to Coach Rob. Bunch of winners up in here.
As noted earlier, I took my son to U. West Florida yesterday, a school I did not know existed two months ago. From an educational standpoint, meh. He has higher aspirations on that front but also toying w/idea of trying to play small school football. If you had told me that a year ago I would have giggled. Will enjoy the process in the meantime.
I have a friend who played basketball at West Florida many years ago. There are worse places to spend college than Pensacola - not that it's a thriving metropolis but the gulf coast beaches and New Orleans aren't too far away.
As for the football program - I believe Gator legend Kerwin Bell had some success as the HC there.
Mark, did you get blown?
Loads of blowin’ going on here lately.
Meanwhile, in Washington, there’s a freeze on all federal grants today. Much fallout (suffering) to come on that one, depending on execution. Something new and tyrannical each day.
I was not blown - they counter offered and included a retention bonus with said offer but ultimately the new job is a better fit for me and a greater opportunity imo. Between that and continued murkiness on the ultimate direction of the organization and my role in that direction it was time for me to move on.
So, my last day is Friday but really I'm kind of already done. A couple of exit interviews/pass offs tomorrow morning but a nice little mini vacation for your boy.
yep, it's a super fun day at the office...
Hey, Whit and Teej and z, and anyone else who deals with govt., if there's nothing in writing about diversity or hiring initiatives, aren't agencies free to go all United Nations and hire Latinos and Blacks and Kentuckians and whoever they want? Would only issue be if someone ratted out an agency for having bunches of "them" on the payroll?
That's correct, Dave. The Kremlin, uh, Trump administration has said that not only can you not have a DEI policy, but that if you just rename it to something else they'll come after you with the boogeymen and send you a Siberian labor camp. But if you have no policy whatsoever, it would take research and dutiful case-making. Which I can't fathom from the band of mindless henchmen. That said, a powerful, sweeping hand can make up whatever they want, so look out, hiring managers. Paranoid sounding, but why would we put anything past this regime?
This must be like what it was like during the Red Scare, eh, Mr. KQ?
had my first training session as the big whistle today. found out that the squad's best returning defender, division one prospect, is having elbow surgery next week as is likely out for the season. bummer. also found out that we've got 3-4 freshmen who are really good. always look on the bright side of life.
nice! can't wait to hear what formation your playing and all that jazz, good luck out there
