While the tiny dictator is roaming around Tuscany with the Maestro and Teejus is getting his hula on at the luau, someone has to step up with some filler. Might as well be some music filler.
So here we are, waiting for the end of Gheorghemas and the launch of new insightful content / dipshittery in 2025.
The ruggers among us might be waiting for someone to shout harmoniously:
Whyyyyyy are we waaaaaaiting?
with a lewd rejoinder or two.
But more of you are simply waiting in the G:TB waiting room (the previous post's Comments section) for Gmas to conclude. Patiently. You are a patient lot of boys and girls.
Oh, but we're also all awaiting the impending, infernal inauguration to launch us into Limbo. You know, the one without the catchy music and the horizontal sticks. Be as nimble as you want, Jack, but you're proper rogered come January 20, lad. Or maybe not. Stay tuned.
Anyway, thanks to the estimable Mr. KQ, who offered me a nice little holiday gift via Insta last week, we have the right soundtrack for today. With guitars! And video.
We pointed you to this a couple of years ago, a Cleveland-based School of Rock performance where some brilliant youth issued a cover of one of the finest punk anthems ever conceived. Amazingly good.
But now, let's travel back in time. Way, way back to December 29, 1988.
In a D.C. music box called the Wilson Center.
To the original.
From the originators.
Let's do this.
I say it again, punk rock will be a salve for the pain of the next chapter.

punk is a pretty good ethos headed into the new year. good choice, good omen.
Went to the cinema tonight to see “A Complete Unknown“.
Really liked it, in spite of expecting very little.
I’ve received a similar review.

Captain’s log. Dry January day 3. (NYD was fun.)
The missus and I have been highly productive today; basemented everything Christmas (of which there was a ton), took down the tree, cleaned the house, began ascending the mountain of laundry, cleaned out the gnarly fridge.
Made it through. The latest offering from Only Murders in the Building over the last two nights. Started the sequel season of Shrinking, though it’s a more annoying watch thus far in this go-around.
There will be mulligans in the 1-2 months ahead, but this calm, productive state of non-drinking does me well.
For those keeping score at home, Tribe men's hoops beats Stony Brook 83-76. Moves to 2-0 in CAA after Long Island road swing. Five in double figures, bench outscores SB subs 38-11.
Ovechkin still has it, and he’s close
In fact, were it not for the 2012 lockout, considering he won the MVP that year and scored in 2 of every 3 games but the league lost 34 games that year, a case could be made that he’d be on the doorstep at this minute. Oh well.
speaking of still having it, a professional aussie rules player complimented me for my apparent fitness given my age at dinner this evening. stay tuned to gheorghemas day 10 to learn why i was at dinner with an aussie rules pro.
Rob, any chance you simply found a polite Aussie who deferred to his elder?
The waiter brought Rob a small steak knife. One thing led to another.
Do what they say, say what you mean
I don’t do dry January (though I have de-christmased the shit out of my house over the past two days and gotten in a couple a of great workouts), but I plan to take some time off when I return from Austin.
Speaking of which, when do I tell my wife that she’ll be watching a CFB semifinal in the town of one the participants whilst we’re on vacation? She’s not gonna be psyched.
winter storms in europe threatening us with a good time. or, more specifically, a free night in frankfurt. this would be fine, except that our dog is due home this afternoon and we won't be there and 6-9 inches are forecast in the dulles area, which might mean we get delayed coming and going.
Is the storm at Dulles going to affect General Esperanza’s arrival as well?
Was just at Dulles dropping my mother off. Carmine DiLorenzo’s squad was doing a shit job on traffic control.
we gave it a run. literally. reached our departure gate in frankfurt to find that the doors had closed. so we get a room and a meal on lufthansa and fly home tomorrow via montreal, right into a snowstorm.
Room and a meal are better than you’d get from many an airline. Lufthansa giving that to all its passengers? They’re getting robbed.
Too soon?
Day began with Jayden Daniels -400 and Bo Nix +300 for rookie of the year. Nix closing the gap quickly.
Commanders-Bucs next Sunday night. Care to place a friendly wager, Whit?
Also, as I mentioned, I’m in Austin for the week. Staying at the Hotel Van Zandt. Very cool boutique-ish hotel. There are no fewer than a dozen bars within a couple hundred yards as well as multiple restaurants and food trucks. Not going to be a great start for me getting back into my normal routine during this post holiday week.
Mark, discipline and restraint are overrated.
i’m on a plane! bound for montreal! then to dulles, where up to a foot of snow is forecast. 50/50 that we spend another night at an airport hotel.
squirrels on a plane.
welcome back to north america rob. you were missed.
though you're probably still in the air somewhere over newfoundland. just a hunch.
Somewhere Over Newfoundland, Rob’s sequel to the Jimmy Buffett 1982 album Somewhere Over China.
