Weekend Bookend

Sometimes comedy is funny because it's an escape, and sometimes it's funny because it makes us see things in ways we'd never considered. Very occasionally, comedy transcends humor and becomes something more. Dave Chappelle's 8:46 does that for me. It's angry and raw and imperfect and brilliant.

This PGA finale in Hilton Head is fun. Koepka making a little run late.

Spent the afternoon down the street at the beach. Paddle out for a woman in our neighborhood who died of cancer recently. While neighborhood came out.

Worked on teaching the kid to surf. Came home and swam in the pool for a couple hours. Crab legs and mashed potatoes on deck. Damn good Father’s Day. Hope it was good for the rest of you Gheorghies. Love y’all.

I biked 16 miles on the road today. Patting myself on the back a bit for that b/c it’s a mountain bike w/ front suspension that absorbs and neutralizes energy.

I also read the whole NY Times and did some crossword puzzling. Sounds unsexy, but I rarely have time to read as much as I want to. About to eat outside at the local BYOB Italian place. Simple day, but an enjoyable one.

woke up hungover just before 10, ate a killer nashville hot chicken breakfast sammie from a local joint, drank a couple cups of coffee, watched soccer, mowed the lawn, watched more soccer and more soccer after that, then watched some golf and just started a fire on the grill. decent day.

Sounds like a lot of great Father's days' all around. We had a very chill day and I got to sleep in.

Read this article yesterday and was a great way to be a little introspective of my relationship with my Dad.

My Father's Day was splendid. I was woken up in the late AM with a breakfast sandwich and a card and a bottle of Redbreast Irish by my gf, which was surprising and pleasing.

My girls came by with a gift and sweet card, and then we went out to see my dad for a leisurely late afternoon visit dinner. Maine lobster roll app, the best NY strip I've had in years with asparagus and well-topped baked potatoes, Key West key lime pie. [Links take you to the Goldbelly site, my new favorite gift (sometimes self-gift) vehicle.] Several Jamo's and some good red wine. Really good stuff.

I take no time with my dad for granted, as more than one gheorghie has helped me learn, but yesterday was a particularly nice one.

Glad all had fine Fathers' Days - the wake up w/the Red Breast...fine indeed. Sounds like a keeper there Whit.
I too woke up hungover, with my 9 year old jumping on me at 730, which is late in our house. She had a bfast tray with OJ and toast w/butter. Also, a t-shirt that she and her sister made the week prior when they were visiting my wife's family in Ohio. I need to include a pic here and will later. It's....nice. It induced much laughter between my wife and I. The picture they drew is that of a golf club and ball, but the club looks like a big penis.
Our fam went out w/good friends/neighbors of ours on a pontoon boot and cruised around St. Aug for much of the morning/early afternoon. We found a little island, anchored, had lunch, let the kids swim around etc. I laid on the couch when we got home, dozed while watching the telly.

Happy moving day from Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers, Z : Moving Day . I hope you're not moving too far away from TR.

My local pool club opened today. Not too crowded. Mostly the moms here w/ their kids. This guy is not complaining.

TR said...

He will be moving a mile farther away from Juan Carlos and me. His loss.

At least that's an easy distance to pedal, even if inebriated, on knobby tires with full suspension slowing you down.

TR said...

It's only front suspension. I once fell off a bike with Zman when I was trying to ride at the pace of his drunken walking. Always a fun night when you fall off a bike that's going 3 mph.

Youth travel baseball is coming back, which is great. News that coaches are expected to wear masks outside the whole time is far less great. I can't wait to faint in front of a bunch of 10 y/o boys.

rob said...

maybe...you're wearing it wrong?

zman said...

TR’s mask is a full leather gimp-style thing, he says it’s hard to breathe with the mouth zipped up. I’m 0.96 miles farther from TR (and Nick) but about equidistant from JC.

that chapelle piece puts things in perspective.

our pool is not opening-- too costly to follow all the rules or something. going to be a hit summer.

Dave said...

hot summer. which might result in some hitting . . .

rootsminer said...

Thanks Z. Now I'm picturing TR coaching baseball in a leather gimp mask (and it's fucking hilarious).

I just ventured to the Y for the first time in more than 3 months. Staff was masked, but almost nobody else besides me. Technically you don't have to wear it when you're exercising, but I figured I'd see how it went. It wasn't too bad, though I wouldn't want to use it while doing cardio.

I have a question unrelated to my apparent leather fetish wardrobe.

I have a Verizon wifi router in my house. It doesn’t cover the whole house. The router says it is an ESSID wireless network type. Any idea what type of WiFi booster/extender I should buy? Will any one work? Am I overthinking the complexity?

rootsminer said...

I'd look into the Linksys "Leather Daddy" Signal Booster.

I upgraded my home router when everyone started distance learning, but did not succeed in getting my old one to work as an extender in my attic, despite having a wired connection to it. Fortunately the one I got (AC 1750 I think) gives pretty good coverage throughout the house. The house has done it's part by shrinking noticeably since March.

Squeaky said...

TR, if you have Verizon FIOS it's easier to switch off the weak WiFi on the router and get a mesh set up. I'm using the Linksys Velop but there are plenty of decent options out there like Eero (Amazon), Orbi and Nest (Google). Some are more invasive in tracking what you surf than others, i.e. Nest.

If you want to nerd out and physical install WiFi access points like a business would, look up Ubiquiti. They have some APs that use PoE (Power over Ethernet) at decent prices. But there is labor involved in the set up.

If your house is wired with cat5 get a mesh system that has ethernet ports, you will get better throughput at the access points.

Almost all of that info is over my Luddite head, guys. I will try to process all of that. Thx.
