Time is a Flat, Lefthanded Circle

When I was a lad, my favorite professional athlete was Carl Yastrzemski. I practiced his pigeon-toed lefty stance, leaning forward just a bit, twirling my Wiffle bat towards the pitcher with my right hand before cocking it above my left ear. I was in Fenway Park on July 24, 1979 when he hit his 400th homer against Oakland's Mike Morgan.

So how cool do you think I found it when his grandson Mike, an outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, played his first big league game in Boston this evening? Or when he did this?

There are occasions in sport that are almost too good to be true. This one was both.

KFC will test Chicken & Donuts for a limited time only in Norfolk/Richmond, VA and Pittsburgh.

Dammit.

I now see that Rob assigned me this detail on the Tweetbox yesterday.

Don’t do it Whit. Make Rob come down and inflict the damage upon himself.

I don’t think Rob can eat stuff like that, in his defense

i'm gonna do a chick-fil-a vs. popeye's chicken sammich taste test, as soon as popeye's reloads their inventory.

I’ll be in Boston in two weeks and I’m pretty annoyed the Sox couldn’t manage to make the playoffs this fall.

TR said...

I’m just fine with them not making it.

Zach Lowe had the author of “Boomtown” on his podcast recently. I listened to it today and that plus the recommendations of a few here pushed me to buy the book. It sounds fascinating.

T.J. said...

That was a great episode. I am not sure what else that guy has written, if anything, but I was intrigued by the Boomtown book for sure.

T.J. said...

OK, no other books for Sam Anderson...so "Boom Town" it is.

Mark, if you have time when you are in Boston and looking for a place to eat and drink great beer, hit up the new Trillium Brewery and restaurant at Fort Point. They just opened it about 6 months ago. Food is supposed to be really good. Beer is some of the best in the state.

If you want a variety of beer and upscale food try Row 34 or the Ginger Man. For dive bars go to Lower Depths, Zman might still have a mug hanging from the ceiling, or its sibling bar Bukowski Tavern.

If you happen to be all the way out in Worcester go to Armsby Abby.

never liked tr all that much, if i'm being honest

Get in line, Rob. It’s a long one.

Mark, I assume I don't have to tell you to go to Bodega. Other places to eat/drink in Boston include:

Woody's (2-3 blocks from Bodega, best pizza and wings in Boston, everything else on the menu sucks, Delirium Tremens and Whale's Tail on tap)

JJ Foley's (solid cheap dive, a staple in Whitney's rotation)

O Ya (zman and zwoman's favorite restaurant anywhere, extremely expensive sushi--worldwide ingredients prepared with Japanese techniques)

Christopher's (technically in Cambridge, andouille and beef burger is the best burger on the planet)

The South End is full of nice places to eat but Franklin Cafe and Butcher Shop probably align with your interests.

Mark said...

Thanks for the recs. I did some eating drinking research and Row 34 and O Ya both made my list. We’re with some others though and didn’t want to book O Ya and have them gawk at the prices.

I’m making Bodega priority and we’re planning on hitting Trillium on our first night in town.

Sadly, we’ll only be in Boston for two days before we have to head to Vermont for Greg’s wedding.

zman said...

On your way out of town, turn off 93 north onto 60 east and go to Nappi Meats. Order a porketta sandwich for the drive to VT. You’ll thank me later.

rob said...

where in vermont is the wedding, mark?

Whitney said...

Squeaker, we need to get back to JJ Foley's sometime soon. Maybe when Paci is back in the States.

Just so we’re clear, the wealthy intellectual who just pushed UFO recognition into mainstream culture is one of the guys who watched Jason Biggs prematurely ejaculate via webcam in American Pie.

Not Elon Musk. Not Richard Branson. Not Bill Gates. That’s not weird at all.

That trip to JJ Foley's end with Paci puking between two train cars on his way home and me going to the Mid East club for a concert in which I bought a PBR can took one sip and gave it back to the bartender. Telling him I think I've had too much to drink already. He had a very befuddled look.

This Yaz story is great--and the grandson is cute.

And, did one of you just purchase a share of the Dodgers through Boehly?
You don't have to keep it a secret from us...

delle donne deserved that shit. she had a crazy good year. i've been to jj foley's with paci once. once.

Mark said...

Greg’s wedding is in Cavendish. The reception and other events are in or near Killington.

zman said...

Squeaky, what show was that? I feel like Paci puked between cars every time we went to Foley's.

Whitney said...

For the record, more that "that trip to JJ Foley's," we went to Foley's every time the US Federal Government brought me up to Boston, which was 1-2 times a year in the early 2000's. I was amused that you guys wouldn't branch out to take me to any of the countless other good spots in that town, but hey, we always had a good time there.

Squeaky said...

Portastatic. Basically everyone from Superchunk, except for the drummer who was switched out for Mac's brother.

That trip to Foley's that resulted in Paci puking, included Cap showing up with a bottle of the 'good' Irish whiskey.

rootsminer said...

Yeah, Whitney doesn't seem like the type to go to the same bar over and over at all.

Blame Paci. If I had a vote we would’ve gone to TC’s Lounge. Teedge loved it. It burned down though.

T.J. said...

And to clarify, because I know some of you were thinking it, No i didn’t love it so much I burned it down

damn, that is precisely the first thought that went through my head. gheorghebrain.

If you enjoy good sports writing and reporting, The Athletic is the best $4.99/month you can spend.

Just today it published an oral history of a random and legendary Auburn-West Virginia game that me and friends attended in 2009. Torrential downpours led to free club level seats, unlimited food and booze and a a chance encounter with the brothers Person.

Houston’s QB, D’Eriq King, is a special athlete and one of those guys who seems like he was made for the spread offense. He’s also the reason that Florida’s new starting QB didn’t even start in high school.

Major league baseball was so bad this year that I became very excited for football, even moreso than usual. CFB has been decent, but the NFL has been gawdawful. Every primetime game has been miserable to watch, and last Sunday’s Saints-Rams game was a wet fart.

Watching Mariotta throw repeatedly to his check-down guys on 3rd and long is brutal.

Mark said...

I’m admittedly a much bigger CFB fan at this point in my life but I don’t think I’m off base when I say that a good portion of NFL games are pretty boring.
