Gheorghemas Carol: Play it Dark

When my favorite band puts out a new record, I'm constitutionally obligated to post about it here. Old 97's follow up their rollicking 2014 release, 'Most Messed Up', with 'Graveyard Whistling' on February 24. Based on the title, and the first single, Good With God, this set of tracks may well have a darker edge than many.

Seems fitting, given the age in which we live.

Here's Good With God, featuring Brandi Carlile. It's got the now-familiar Old 97's guitar sound, persistent and driving, and Rhett Miller's wry turn of phrase, but it's somehow ominous in a way that we haven't heard from the 97's in a while.

I like this one quite a bit. Has an X feel to it with the surf-garage-cowpunk-psychobilly twang plus John Doe & Exene-ish duet. Two thumbs up.

[and that's your rock snob comment for the week]

This Washington football team apparently doesn't want to play the Cowboys a third time.

At Not Very Jiffy Lube getting oil change for my wife's minivan. 2 guys working, a TV that goes in and out during episode of People's Court, and a dude sitting next to me who couldn't produce anymore noise breathing through his nose.

And Tom Coughlin's potential return to coach the Jags is real.

That's funny, she just had me check her oil yesterday. Oh!

Paul Young is approximately 5 billion times better than Richard Marx.

FOGTB Dave Fairbank tweeted one of the best Obits ever composed. I intend to plagiarize someday, if only in concept. Read it here.

Showtime just released an amazing 90-min documentary on Lawrence Phillips called "Running For His Life." If you get the channel, you should DVR it. Armen Ketayian was an Exec Producer and Jeffrey Wright narrated. Fascinating look at his life.

I still can't get used to Zaza Pachulia starting for the Warriors. He gets wide open passes in the paint and immediately passes the ball.
