Way More Cool

Gheorghe: The Blog is a big fan of NPR's Tiny Desk series, based on the number of embedded clips from the various performances in our annals.

Check out this one below -- it features New Orleans rapper Juvenile with some quality guests. The performance is boisterous, officially described by NPR as "one of the most rambunctious experiences at the Tiny Desk."

You may recognize G:TB fave Trombone Shorty in the clip. You may also recognize recently gheorghed artist Jon Batiste.

You probably don't recognize the cellist who enters at the 19:00 mark to add some strings to the funky beats, alongside a violinist colleague at the Louisiana Philharmonic.

But you should.

At least in name only. Check him out. Jake Fowler. Cellist extraordinaire.

And Cuke!

Back in April, Les Coole and the Cukes dropped "Remember (10-9-8-7)," a song that prominently featured Jake on cello. He's a fantastic cellist and a good beer drinker.

So I'm one step removed from Trombone Shorty!

Enjoy.

Nice proximity, Whit.

Not sure I've heard any New Orleans rap. I have been exploring some southern hip hop recently, so I'll check it out.

You're one step removed from Juvenile! Back That Azz Up!

I'll do it. I'm now hip to Goodie Mob and UGK, so I guess I'll keep digging.

Highs and lows for zfamily today. zdaughter won the foul shooting contest at basketball camp, garnering a t-shirt and a Blow Pop. In less proud news, zcat did not come last night. I put him out before I made dinner (otherwise he would steal the pork chops off the counter) and he hasn't been back for about 20 hours. I found some mysterious orange furballs next to my house but no other trace of him.

Cool post.
Sorry about the cat.
I posted this on last post and realized should’ve put it here. FWIW —

Ding dong the dick is dead, the wicked dick is dead.
Which old Dick? The Wicked Snyd!
Ding-dong! The Wicked Dick's been fried.
Bought out, you say, good enough, we're glad he's gone.
Ding-dong! The Wicked Snyd, be gone!
Wake up you sleepy head, read the news, check out Threads,
The word is out -- the Wicked Dick is dead
He's gone where the sex-offends and ass-hats go
Below, below, that's Hell, you know.
Yo-ho, let's rally round and watch again, here's hoping the Commanders win
Ding-dong, the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low
Let the world know, the Wicked Dick is dead!

Don't give up hope for Zcat. Good work by Zdaughter.

Years ago my wife bought a catnip plant from a local greenhouse. Our (now 14 year old) cat loved it, and got wayyyy up on the nip. Then a big thunderstorm blew through, and he must have freaked and run away. We put up flyers and looked for him for weeks. Close to giving up, we decided do another batch of flyers in a wider area. A few days later we got a call that he was on someone's porch about 1.5 miles away and across the river from us. It must have been an epic journey to get there.

He doesn't trip on the nip anymore, or stray too far from home. Vet told us he had a few weeks to live over a year ago. Some cats are survivors. Hoping zcat is one of those.

I was about to give Rob shit for not crediting me on this post as I sent the Juvenile tiny desk clip to Zman, Rob and TJ a couple weeks back. Glad I checked the author. Good on you, Whit.

I’m biased because I love southern rap and Juvenile dropped when I was in college (shout-out to “Ha”) but he’s an underrated rap legend. Basically kicked off the Cash Money reign. Also, Whitney left out another New Orleans musical featured in that clip. That chubby guy with the mini fro? Mannie Fresh. One of the greatest and most prolific beat makers in the last 25 years of hip hop.

Rootsy- if you dig UGK. Check out 8Ball & MJG. Memphis rap legends.

rootsminer said...

Will do, Mark. Memphis is in my top two American musical cities.

Roots: just a warning so you’re prepared. It’s mid 90s and not the most sophisticated shit you’ve ever hear but it’s undeniably Memphis/Southern.

I played on mostly black AAU teams from middle school on and that was the soundtrack to those summers.

My Tribe/De La got no play.

Re: American musical cities. Is New Orleans the other or do you have a surprise?

rootsminer said...

It’s New Orleans. If I rounded out my top five #3-5 would probably have some backwater towns.

rootsminer said...

And I don’t need a lick of sophistication for me to like it. More often the contrary.

Mark said...

Now I’m even more bummed we missed each other on that random day in DC last summer.

And I need 3-5.

Hi Gheorghies.

Hell-looooooooooooo Mark.

Good stuff, Donna

Marls thought he beat me but I'm up and breaking into the Union Station McDonald's.

Joke for 4 (one who is no longer around these parts).

I’ll have to really give my 1-5 American musical cities/ towns some serious thought. I hereby vow to reveal it in a post on this very site, sometime in the next 12 months.

Took my daughter to her first full fledged overnight camp today. Camp was located in the middle of nowhere on the west coast of Florida. 6.5 round trip. Not an ideal way to spend your Sunday.
