In which I chronicle various oddities in an increasingly futile effort to block out the immensely insane fuckery loosed upon the land.
Did you know that Phil Hartman was an accomplished album cover designer? Neither did I. Freelance arts writer Conor Herbert recently wrote a detailed piece examining Hartman's pre-fame, indeed pre-comedy work as a graphic designer. Hartman designed more than 40 covers, including this one from Poco.
In news of an entirely different sort, connected to Hartman only via Canada, here's a headline you might enjoy:It was 9:00 am in Prince George, British Columbia on Friday, September 8, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were in no mood for shenanigans. When they got word of a grown-ass man driving down the road in a pink Barbie Jeep, they swung into action.
“While it might seem to some to be an inefficient use of police time to pull over a driver in a toy car, the risk the driver was creating to other motorists on the road who were forced to go around him, coupled with the risk to himself as other drivers are not in the habit of looking for toy cars on the busy road, was enough to warrant police attention.”
Dudley Do-Right, on the case.
And finally, a brief and entirely inadequate appreciation of the end of an era. Last week, Ray Hudson announced his retirement from broadcasting, ending more than 50 years in soccer as a player, coach, and one of the all-time greats in the booth. We celebrated him at least once, which isn't nearly enough for one of the singular voices in the sport.
If you've got a few minutes, give this compilation of Hudson's calls a listen. It'll perk you right up. Magisterial!
good news on the homefront to share. the little one was selected for the competition squadron for cheer nationals for the fourth and final time in her colorado career. they call it "making the mat". she was a little nervous this go-round, as the buffs cheer program has experienced a coach prime bump and gotten increasingly strong over her time in boulder.
ReplyDeletethey've finished one spot short of qualifying for the event finals each of the past two years. here's to changing that in january. you're all invited to the mini-summit in orlando.
Go Buffs!
ReplyDeleteI did not know about Phil Hartman's design career. Neat stuff.
I'm working on something in the shop today and just noticed the name Ronni Dangerfield. I wonder if she gets any respect.
Way cool about Hartman. Guessing the audience is aware that he was also Captain Carl on Pee-wee's Playhouse. This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but highly rec HBO documentary on Paul Reubens, Pee-wee As Himself. Been out a while, but I just recently caught it.
ReplyDeleteas a semi-occasional listener to Dana Carvey & David Spade's podcast, as well as Conan's, i was aware of bill's design past. he was also bigly into airplane models. loved that guy - probably on my top 5 of folks in the entertainment world i wish were still with us.
ReplyDeleteI did know about Phil Hartman and the album covers! People like to attribute Steely Dan's Aja to him, but it wasn't Phil.
ReplyDeleteOver/under on gheorghies who have been to Medieval Times is 2.5. Tell us if you have or haven’t. I’ll start. I have not. (Sadly.)
ReplyDeletenope. but i have visited an 11th century scottish keep.
ReplyDeleteCool about your kid and the cheer Buffs! My nephew was a HS cheerleader and into it university, too, and they've gone to Orlando every year. Really strong teams in their divisions or classes (not sure of terminology). And he is unbelievably strong. Our family news -- the oldest has landed in Taipei. He's starting his orientation for the program right now (they're 12 hours ahead of us until DST ends, then it's 13). He says it's a beautiful city, surrounded by mountains, and HOT HOT HOT at the moment. And I've never been to Medieval Times but to many castles -- lots in Scotland, my "spirit country" -:)!
ReplyDeleteA 'no' on Medieval Times.
ReplyDeletecongrats to roberto & daughter.
ReplyDeletenegative on the medieval times though i have been to a renaissance festival outside of houston.
I've been to Medieval Times.
ReplyDeleteNever been to medieval times, but I did put myself in a williamsburg stockade as a kid.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of bad drivers, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mST4Z6pZhwA&t=21s
ReplyDeleteI’ve been to Medieval Times.
ReplyDeleteAnd that’s the Over! (Dave has, too.)
ReplyDeleteElaine and I grabbed a beer at AW Shucks last night, and our bartender friend Crystal, whom some of you have met, said she was going to visit her boyfriend in Chicago next week and he is insistent they go to Medieval Times. Curious.
But now I want to go before I die. And there are only 10 in existence. None near me.
It took every ounce of restraint I could muster but when I walked into Ms. Calamari's class on back to school night I did not yell "Oh! Galamad!!"
ReplyDeleteNext time you visit NJ we can go to the Medieval Times in Lyndhurst.
ReplyDeleteAnd to be clear, if you're visiting Chicago there are many more interesting things to do than Medieval Times. It's not a bucket list thing. It's a "my kids want to eat food with their hands and watch people fight with swords and they serve alcohol so sure let's go" thing.
ReplyDeletei have been to medieval times several times. the original medieval times, in lyndhurst, nj. and i've seen cable guy. my son had a birthday party there, and i went there in 1993 on a field trip with the school i was working at, and maybe been one other time. great stunts and competition but i'm starting to think the tournament, like professional wrestling, was rigged.
