Husky Gameday, Part the Third

If you'd told me the Huskies would win the district tournament and be eliminated in the first round of the Region 4C playoffs before the season, I'd have signed for it with few regrets. I knew we were in a rebuilding year, and I definitely knew that our coach had a lot to learn. But now that we're actually facing the prospect of going home if we lose tonight at 6:00 pm, I would very much not sign for that outcome any longer. (Technically, we're going home regardless of what happens, but I think you get my point.)

Our opponent this evening brings a gaudy 16-0-2 record to the match (against our 8-6-4, though we're 5-1-1 in our last seven). They've scored 71 goals and allowed 5 (30 and 28 for the Huskies). They have five freshman starters, all of whom play for the same elite club team and have a lot of familiarity. They are fast, technical, and smart, and they're in good form - they won their district tournament final, 5-0.

We played them in the first game of our regular season. Gave up a goal off of a corner kick scramble in the first minute, then an own goal in the 53rd. Held our own, though we didn't exactly threaten them. We had kids playing different positions than we do now, and we know each other better.

So you're tellin' me there's a chance! Up the Huskies!

  1. How about an early goal by the Huskies to ratchet up the tension on those front runners across the pitch? Good luck!

  3. This just in... this GTB intern got a copy of the Huskies' team song they've been chanting all over Loudoun County... sing it loud, sing it proud!

Here we go now, Up the Huskies
    4C playoffs now
You might ask does Coach smell musky?
    We would say "And how"!

We'll score and then we'll park the bus-ki
    It could get real physical
We'll beat them like Ukraine beats Russkies
    Not to be political!

We play tonight when it gets dusky
    Just after it gets dark
    Tommy Boy was from Sandusky
And we're gonna leave a mark!

  5. your huskies executed the gameplan really well for the first twenty-five minutes of the game. played patiently, made it crowded in the midfield, pushed the ball wide. opponent had a lot of corners, but we defended them well.

fifteen minutes to go in the first half, they scored on a sweet corner kick routine. scored on two more corners in the following five minutes. 3-0 at the half.

had to open things up in the second to try to get back into the game. gave up a fourth on a fluky bounce off a defender, then our starting defensive midfielder and rock sprained an ankle and had to leave the match. i started substituting to get everyone in, they got a couple more. 6-0 final.

our kids told me that the other team was really positive and great sports during the match - they were openly rooting for them to win states. that was cool.

lots of tears afterwards as the seniors said their piece. got a little dusty where i was standing.

i'm sure i'll have some reflections at some point. kinda think we overachieved a little bit. has more to do with the kids than the coach, but i'm proud of 'em nonetheless.

  6. Well done, Coach. Be proud of yourself in the little moments between being proud of your team. You’ve certainly earned it.

  9. Coach Rob has no comment on this speculative commentary. He's just proud of his team and that they played to the very best of their abilities. He's Husky Proud.

He plans to spend the offseason fishing in the Outer Banks, at least for 3 days in July. And not actually fishing.

  10. Things I learned playing Strat-o-matic over the weekend:

In 1973, when the Oakland A's played the Detroit Tigers, it meant a rendezvous between two players with the same first name. Tigers LF Dick Sharon played on the same field as A's 2B Dick Green.

It should be noted that Dick Sharon and Dick Green should never coincide. That's just common sense and good general health.

  11. So in February it snowed a foot here in Norfolk, Virginia. When the snow accumulated on our pool cover, it ripped the bricks from one side and they tumbled into the pool. We finally got an estimate on fixing it and repairing the surface of the pool. $46,000.Tried to go through insurance, they denied us on a technicality. They can go fuck themselves. Trying to figure out how to do this on the cheap, not having much success. This all came to a head about an hour ago. So I’m drinking $1 beers at the bar now.

    Fffffffffff
