Your New Neighbor

I have finally figured out how to turn rob and Dave into Build-the-Wall, anti-immigration, anti-globalization, pro-isolation, full-throated Trumpists:  the Joro spider.

That's a little one.  They can be up to 4 inches across.  The Joro spider, or Trichonephila clavata to the cognoscenti, is indigenous to Asia but a bunch of them snuck into a cargo freighter and wound up in Georgia.  According to the Washington Post, they tolerate cold weather and are migrating north, towards Leesburg and eventually Highland Park.  Here's an entomologist's take:

You'll know they're in your neighborhood when you start seeing giant yellow cobwebs on your power lines.

Apparently you will also encounter them while riding your bike, riding a horse, skateboarding, running, walking, really just doing anything outside--you will walk into one of their giant webs and the spider that lives in it will land on your face.  They are big and venomous, but don't worry!  Their mandibles are typically too small to pierce human skin, except for the big females' mouths, and their venom is irritating but not deadly.  You will survive the bite, if not the ensuing heart attack.

There's more!  They can spin a web like a parachute to catch the wind and fly for miles across the land.

On the plus side, they serve as an additional food source for native birds, and will help control other invasive species like the (dreaded) spotted lanternfly.

Enjoy your time outdoors this summer!

Stuff You Slept On, Alternatively Titled "layzman's filler" -- rob Edition

Predictably, rob sent me a fully-formed layzman's filler submission. Pay attention Dave.

In 1990, a regionally successful band from Tucson, Arizona released its second album. In 1993, that same band toured with Pearl Jam as its opening act. And within two years, it was disbanded, its legacy carried away like desert dust in a heavy wind. But that second album, man, that thing rocked.

I'm talking about Auntie Ramos' Pool Hall by the Sidewinders, a rollicking 50 minutes of grunge-era (but not exactly grunge) alternative rock. This record could've been the soundtrack of any period film about disaffected teenagers set in the desert southwest, guitar-heavy and evocative of its geographic roots.

The album kicks off with its best tune, 'We Don't Do That Anymore', a young grown-up's lament about how it hurts to stay up late these days, a wistful "I've got a job, you pay the rent and what do you know. All that time spent wasting time, has come and gone." 'Sara's Not Sober' follows, turning the opening track on its head, kicking up the guitars a notch and asking a lover to choose booze or her man. 'Get Out of That Town' could fit in on a Godfathers record, another 80/90s alternative throwback. 'If I Can't Have You' changes the calculus on the typical lovelorn tune, 'cause "If I can't have you, I'm gonna find someone new." And 'Came on Like the Sun' is at turns a sweet duet and a drunk's regret story, wrapped in a Tucson sunrise.

I haven't heard this album in nearly 20 years. And I don't own it any more. But I loved it once, it's Western twist on the East Coast alternative guitar bands that were the soundtrack of my 1990s. And now I'm gonna go listen to it again.

Watch your back, rob

Perhaps rob headed off to Switzerland to avoid this gentleman. Seriously, that appears to be an honest to goodness website.

Never Go Against the Family

There's a lot going on today: the Wrens close out their regular season at Towson (you'd get a preview, but the game's meaningless - W&M will be the 3rd seed in next week's CAA Tournament), UVA hosts Syracuse in a game that means a whole lot more than anyone expected in November, Fulham begins its desperate scramble out of the basement of the Premiership at home against a much better Chelsea squad, Clarence, Dave, Zman, TR and Marls are recovering from hangovers, Mark and Danimal are warm (assholes) and the Teej is studying.

We're not gonna write about any of that stuff. Because this:

Watch your back, rob

It seems rob is in Minneapolis, based on his bitching about the cold in said city in the comments of the post below. Well, rob, based on a quick internet search, the cold may not be all you have to worry about in Minneapolis:

I fully expect rob to arm himself appropriately in case of attack:

Editor Submission

While our diminutive founder searches for ways to work hemlock into every dish his in-laws eat, he found time to send me this link with his tiny little fingers. A clip entitled "The Science of Morning Wood" seems like something we might all enjoy:

And good luck with the poisoning, rob.

Cee Lo Green + singing muppets + "F[orget]uck You"

This video involves a number of recurring G:TB themes and Gwyneth Paltrow in a catsuit, which I hope will become a recurring theme.
