Make America Fuck Again

In case you had any doubt about Sturgill Simpson's intent, the first track on his new record is the title of this post. The album starts strong, dirty, and slinky, and it stays in that pocket.

Simpson told everyone that he wants them to illegal stream it, and lots of someones posted it. Recorded under the name of his alter-ego, Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds, "Mutiny After Midnight" is funky and gritty, with more than a nod to the 70s, and just a tinge of country. And lots and lots of innuendo. Track four is entitled, "Stay On That D", and while it's about playing in a live band, we see what you're up to, Sturgill.

After it was leaked, it was taken down and now it's hard to find online. But I got to hear the whole thing, and as the kids say, it fucks. Listen to "Situation", which contains the lyric, "Ever since the day we met, wanna make you wet, wanna make you sweat," to my earlier point. And then go find the record in its physical form.

  1. Happy Selection Sunday. A worthy beginning to the best sports week of the year.

  2. Selection Sunday and the Oscars is built for me. I know the Oscars isn’t for everyone but I love movies. Was raised on going to the movies and the Oscars are cool. To me, at least.

  3. Oscars wrap up- my 14 year old came out and watched most of the show with us. Her first time really doing it and certainly the first time she tried to understand what was going on. She was quite taken aback by how long the show would last. I also had to remind her the show was in LA so it was three hours earlier. She of course asked what everyone did afterward. I explained there were lots of fancy parties and whatnot but sometimes people just want to grab a burger and go home.

Cut to this morning before volleyball where video of MBJ at In-n-Out with Oscar in hand surfaces. She got a kick out of that.

  5. Quick follow on "We're 69!" series. TCU and Santa Clara played their way into the tournament. TCU won 8 of 9 to close regular season and one in Big 12 Tournament. They're a 9 seed, which means if they win first round, they get Duke in second round. Santa Clara won 11 of their last 13 and made WCC final vs. Gonzaga. They're a 10 seed in Midwest and open vs. Kentucky.

San Diego State was indeed one of ESPN bracketology hedgehog Joe Lunardi's First Four out. They lost four of last six, made Mountain West final but lost to Utah State. Unsure if a win would have bumped them in. Indiana was among Next Four out after losing six of seven and going meekly in Big Ten Tournament. Cal Golden Bears faded further after losing three of last four and to Florida State in ACC Tournament.

  7. Like Mark I like movies but I don't see them as much as I'd like. Now that's a bad sentence! I was pulling for Ethan Hawke to win for his turn in Blue Moon. His character is about as Gen X as it gets (even though the movie takes place in 1943) so it's in his wheelhouse.
