How Do Ya Like Them Apples?

Tom Brown sounds like the name of a guy in the witness protection program, but he's a 79-year-old retired chemical engineer who loves apples.  More specifically, he spends his retirement researching and hunting for obscure apple varieties in Appalachia.  I know this because I read this article.

So far Mr. Brown found over 1,200 different varieties of apples, some that were thought lost for over 100 years, and he grows them on his orchard, Heritage Apples.  Oddball names include Greasy Ball, Bug Horn, Curtis Cheese, Cow's Snout, Smutty, and None Better Seek No Further.

I never knew there were so many different kinds of apples.  This is a pretty wholesome way to spend one's retirement.

Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan has an interesting section on apples. This is a good article written by him in the New York Times.

One detail that stuck with me is that almost all apples you enjoy eating are from grafted trees. If you grow an apple tree from seed, the resulting fruit probably won't taste very good.

my precheck membership has expired. question for the assembled gheorghies: re-up precheck/global entry or go with clear?

Gary Sheffield prefers the clear (and the cream).

Clear seems to consistently have shorter lines. The issue is if it’s at every major airport. Newark just got it before the pandemic. I know Atlanta and Denver have it.

I would canvass the 8-10 airports you are most likely to hit, and see which have Clear. If most/all do, go Clear.

Clear is not accepted at all airports. If you are planning a lot of international travel, Global Entry is good. I don't remember seeing lines for Clear when you re-enter the US.

Clear seems expensive unless you travel very frequently and go to a lot of sporting events.

Another weirdly coincidental comment having just an hour or so ago filled out the global entry app. Also renewed Clear just last week. Global entry depends on the int'l travel....if 1-2 trips per year minimum, probably worth it imo...only takes 1 or 2 times in an impossibly long line after a day of travel when you ask yourself, "what was I thinking?"
This is the do or die year for Clear...it is expensive...gotta get 10+ real uses out of it to be worth it.

I don't know anything about Clear, but Global Entry is worth the hassle (unless you have more than $800 worth of foreign stuff because you had to spend a week away and missed her birthday, prompting her to say "You better bring me something good," resulting in you having to hang out with Customs for half an hour while they try and figure out how much to tax you).

Croatia-Spain is what I thought Portugal-Belgium would be.

It might have been easier to fib to the customs agents, but such is the weight of zman's moral compass.

Some credit cards reimburse you for the Global Entry fee, like the Amex platinum card. You might have one card in your possession that makes it an easier decision.

look at the big swinging dick dropping his platinum amex on the table all casual-like

I could fib to the Customs agents, but if I get caught I would lose my Global Entry and possibly my license to practice law.

Not a bad day of soccer thus far.

It appears I missed some quality footie today. Always fun to see France lose.

Great sports TV night: Jack Leiter pitching for Vandy in the CWS, NBA, Yankees and Stanley Cup Finals. I am back from an 18-6 coaching win and poured a big fat scotch. Life is good.
