Words to Live By

“My forties are kicking my ass/And handing them to me in a margarita glass.” In a smooth opening line that makes Christopher Cross look like an amateur sailor, Jenny Lewis kicks off “Puppy and a Truck” with a realistic view of her life, complete with unconditional love from her dog and a pedal steel guitar. Welcome to Lewis’ yacht-rock era. Pour a drink and stay a while.

That's the opening graf of Rolling Stone's review of Jenny Lewis' new single, "Puppy and a Truck". I saw her play this live as she opened for Harry Styles a few months ago. It's a different sound for her, but the lyrics are terrific, and it's Jenny Freaking Lewis, people. Get your Thanksgiving week started with some easy-listenin', alt-rock-style.

I'm girding up for a bike ride tomorrow with FOGTB, and erstwhile manic caller to many among us, (now not so) Heavy D McD. I'm midway between where he lives in Asheville and his cousin coming from Richmond.

Hopefully he'll pick a route where the temps can hit the mid 40s, rather than the mid 30's expected in Floyd County.

As rob mentioned in the last post's comments, he and I traveled back to the 'Burg to watch our alma mater lose by 3 to their sometime rival, Richmond. We began at one of our elder fratre's exquisite tailgate (slice-it-yourself prosciutto, paella, etc.), made our way to a few others, and enjoyed suite access with free beer throughout the game. Followed by hours of drinking at the ol' Delly and some newer joints in Merchants Square.

As rob also mentioned, neither of us has a firm grasp on how we got from bars to hotel at the end of the evening. I'm on Day 2 of recovery (though I had some beers whilst watching football yesterday). Sucks getting old.

I made 3 Tribe games this fall. I do enjoy my proximity to my old school. Get back when you can, W&Mers.

In today's cheery media news: Alden Global, the vulture hedge fund famous for buying newspapers and gutting them for profits, is trying to purchase Lee Enterprises.

Lee is one of nation's biggest newspaper chains -- 75 papers in 26 states. Big presence in Virginia (Richmond, Roanoke, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg), Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin. For Virginia denizens, Alden already owns Norfolk and Newport News papers, so acquiring Lee would allow further slashing and consolidation.

I suppose it can make my local daily worse, but that's all a matter of degrees these days, as it's already pretty sorry.

Hey folks, I know that several of you visit New Orleans regularly. Niece is headed there in a couple weeks, staying in hotel on Camp St., between French Quarter and Warehouse District and attending convention at Morial Center. Any recs for restaurants and entertainment nearby?

rob said...

depending on where she’ll be on camp, she could be very close to backspace, which is very high on my list of bars in new orleans.

It’s not super close but Cochon is a great restaurant.

Howlin' Wolf is nearby. Hot 8 and other brass bands frequently play there. Saw Rebirth there in May. Recommend.

Check out these lists for more...

cosign cochon - that place is amazing if you dig on swine.

also, i assume your niece is a classy young lady, so she'll enjoy the revolving bar at the hotel monteleone, home of the sazerac. also not far from where i think she'll be.

Gracias, folks. My niece is more working-class. W&M grad (Class of 2017) with degree in geology and minor in marine science. Works at school-affiliated Va. Institute of Marine Science doing coastal and environmental research. Slings beer part-time at Billsburg Brewery. Enjoys occasional classy outing, but ain't afraid to get her boots and elbows dirty.

rob said...

then she's gonna love new orleans.

Whitney said...

Tell her to be careful down there. It’s apparently gotten relatively lawless of late.

Whitney said...

…which pains me mightily to say

Thanks, Whit. She'll be there for an environmental convention attended by thousands, so there oughta be plenty of touring companions.

Hey, everybody, the Grammy nominations are out. Anyone here shocked to hear that they’re ridiculously out of touch and way off the mark, at least accordingly to one dumb-assed, angry gheorghie?

By the way, ABBA was nominated for their first time. I’m sure it’s for their best stuff.

Oh! Oh, and AC/DC got a nod for their recent work. Undoubtedly their apex. Jesus Fucking H. Christ on a popsicle stick.

Whit- have you tried not caring? It’s better that way.

Had a nice chilly Floyd county gravel/road ride with heavy d and his cousin today.

I’ll also co-sign Cochon as well as it’s sister seafood restaurant Peche. Hit both up in October. Didn’t notice any difference in the general New Orleans vibe while there, Whit, but was only in town for two days. Going back for 4 more on the day after Xmas

Whitney said...

Rootsy, I suppose that someday I won’t care. I hope that’s true. I don’t even know why it gets my goat. It just does.

We are probably the last generation that considered the Grammy Awards relevant and/or watches network TV, which is why you see artists 10-20 years older nominated.

The ABBA reunion is sad.
