I was working from home today and not in front of the TV or on Twitter. I had no idea what was going on until mid afternoon. I’m gutted for our country. And what makes it worse (to me) is we live all around people who have no problem with what went down at the Capitol today.

Hate-watched Hannity to watch him try to spin. He says that the crowd was generally great, but only a couple characters made the problems. He also said the cops are to blame for not securing the perimeter. No renouncing of the people who broke in.

As has been identified on social media, the attackers spotted a horrifying but unsurprising amount of pro-Nazi/Holocaust messages on t-shirts and gear. Nauseatingly murderous things like “Camp Auschwitz” and “6MWE.” If there were any justice, they’d all get the Aldo Raine treatment from Inglorious Basterds and be forced to walk around with schwastikas etched into their foreheads for all time. These are the people Hannity won’t condemn. Fuck that guy.

If you want to become [even more] depressed, check out the comments on any FoxNews online article covering today's events. Let's just say not many folks have done much soul searching.

Imagine you are a run-of-the mill, well-intended and unassuming conservative and supporter of Trump who goes in person to the Capitol rally. Now imagine during the event (a) you end up standing next to a group of fellow supporters in Nazi gear or (b) you find out someone died during the event because folks broke into a federal building. Is there no point where you say "you know what, this is far beyond what I came here for/can get behind"?

Prior to reconvening the debates in Congress this evening, it was looking more possible than ever that we might wake up to three parties. Several Senators stepped to the plate (I know, it took some of the Rs long enough). But Lankford, Sasse, Booker delivered powerful messages, as did Lindsay Graham, who said he thought objecting to certification was a "uniquely bad idea". Also kept referring to Pence as "Mike" and breaking the wall on the absurd/outdated formality/pomposity of the whole proceedings. I yield the remainder of my time...

Maybe it's because I've watched the STARS NXIVM documentary recently (and I know I'm not breaking any new ground), but there are LOTS of similarities you can spot between the leaders/operations of cults and what we have seen unfolding over these 4-ish years. Showcase the leader as unusually smart or talented? Require unflinching loyalty? Strongly rebuke anyone who disagrees with you? Use attorneys as a sword to maintain/advance your power? ALL CHECK. I sincerely hope there is some sort of trigger that helps deprogram the well meaning folks.
