2020 Music in Review

Here's some songs to fill the air for you this weekend. Les Coole has once again selected his favorite tunes from the prior year.  The usual Top 20, as well as an expanded Top 50.

Of note: a lot of bands of distant yesteryear (yestermillennium?) issued worthy releases in 2020.  Springsteen and my hometown band Waxing Poetics made the Top 20, but there are enjoyable tunes in the Top 50 by:

  • The Boomtown Rats
  • Wire
  • X
  • Midnight Oil
  • Neil Young
  • Paul Heaton (of Housemartins fame)
  • The Psychedelic Furs
  • Nada Surf
Oh, and Ian Dury's kid.  Check it all out.

(If Dave/Greasetruck were on Spotify, his song would be on the list. Sorry for the non-Spotify listeners, but you can at least see the lists and listen via your usual methods.)

ah, shit, Hank Aaron just died

the hammer! that sucks.

Bummer about Hank. I wonder how the old Unit M hammer is doing.

This morning I toured a steel mill, where they turn scrap steel first into glowing hot 6" x 6" x 69' long billets, then into rebar, angle iron, etc. Their electric bill is $2 million a month. That is a crazy work environment.

86 years and 755 dingers. Not bad.

Happy Friday, gents. Still sober MTD. My youngest got in trouble, so the wife shut down all screen time. We ended up baking as a family with jazz (McCoy Tyner) playing on the Sonos. Everybody is helping, nobody is yelling at each other. Has ended up being a pretty good night, especially since I am making my kids do most of the clean-up.

If you’re looking for an incredible jazz piano album, check Phineas Newborn Jr’s “A World of Piano”. It’s incredible. McCoy Tyner is great, too.

speaking of jazz, we just watched 'soul' as a family. it's a work of art.

Rob, what happened to Nathan Knight?

rob said...

he's on a two-way contract, so he can only be active for 60 games. since there's no g-league right now, he's practicing and traveling with the hawks most of the time, but he can't be active every game.

rob said...

that's why he wasn't active this evening. if you're asking a more existential question, i'm gonna need a few minutes.

My daughter turns 9 tomorrow. We took off to Orlando this afternoon with another family that has two kids who are her friends to go to her favorite cookie place, Gideon’s (TJ has been there). Cookies and cookie cake for tomorrow secured. Then to the Orlando Science Center. Finished up the day at her favorite taco joint (mine too), Hunger Street Tacos. That she wanted to do all that shit to celebrate her birthday is something I consider a major parenting win. Meaning, she thinks a lot of the things that I think are cool are cool.

Mark, how many sneakers is she getting for her birthday?

Mark said...

She got a mini fridge for her new room and we’re going shoe shopping next weekend. Would e had to anyway because she’s out grown a bunch of her shoes recently. The kid has grown an inch since November.

A tale as old as time.

zson's VW Type 2 pinewood derby car won first place in the design category. It was not a perfect replica--it incorporated design elements from the early T1 and the later T2--but I think the tiny steal your face logo on the rear window helped, as did the DARK STAR license plate. Yes, this is a humblebrag.

RIP Larry King.

This clip of Dana Gould doing his Larry King impression on the Kevin Pollack show had me rolling today.

It was marinated lamb loin chops for the win tonight in the TR house. Red wine vinegar, honey, olive oil, fresh garlic, fresh rosemary, fresh thyme and salt for 6-9 hours did the trick. Half the cost and twice the size of regular lamb chops. Would have loved a nice red with that fatty meat, and a scotch after the fact, but decided to keep hanging on to dry January. By my fingernails.

Feel free to send me the specifics on that recipe. We thoroughly enjoy lamb in my home.

Why can’t UFC cards start at 9 instead of 10? That hour makes an enormous difference for my old ass.

TR said...

I will send to you. Are you paying the $69 (nice) for the fight? I got an alert saying I would get a deal as an ESPN+ subscriber. The $69 price tag didn’t seem like a deal to me.

i would like mcgregor to get his ass beat so his rapey douchey self can slink away into ignominious anonymity.

Mark said...

My kid and wife are having a sleep over with their friends tonight because the Dad of that house is snowboarding in Utah this weekend so I’m getting the fights. Not a deal at all, which is why I haven’t bought a fight in quite some time. But I’m home alone and I like to have a few while watching violence so I’m spending some money.

Daniel Cormier is better at what he does than anything I’ll ever do but, good God, that dude is in the worst shape. Even when he’s training for a major title fight he’s just a big, doughy pile of shit. It’s amazing to me when world class athletes can’t be bothered to get in great shape.
