The Wisdom of Youth

One of the many cool things about having children who are old enough and engaged enough in the world to find their own interests is that I get to learn from them. My 16 year-old, for instance, closely follows the solo careers of the members of One Direction, so I've learned from her that Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan make some really decent music.

From my other kid, I'm learning more about dance and different movement theories. Netflix features a documentary called 'Move', which tells stories of dancers and choreographers from around the world. On Thanksgiving, we watched an episode about Ohad Naharian's Gaga movement language. From 1990 to 2018, Naharian was the artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, where he developed Gaga, a flowing, loose-limbed style that pushes dancers to connect with their bodies in space. (I don't know, man, that's just what it looks like to me - judge for yourself.)

Naharian has extended the principles of Gaga to non-dancers, with a global series of online and in-person classes designed to teach people "to connect to their bodies and imaginations, experience physical sensations, improve their flexibility and stamina, exercise their agility and explosive power, and enjoy the pleasure of movement in a welcoming, accepting atmosphere."

As seen in 'Move', and in other publicly-available videos, Naharian is both very serious about his work, and capable of being sublimely silly in trying to unlock his dancers' inhibitions. Almost...Gheorghie, if you will. Here's an example where he leads a large group. Dig it.

My daughter informed us that it's her professional goal to dance for Batsheva. In Tel Aviv. Expanding her horizons, expanding her parameters. I didn't think she'd get into a dance program as well-regarded as VCU's, so who am I to doubt her.

tribe has a positive covid test, so won't be traveling to raleigh to play nc state. we're one for two in getting games played. not great, bob.

rob said...

oh, wait, my bad. tribe's next five games (including tonight in raleigh) will not be played as scheduled. that's...not optimal.

So 1 for their first 6? That's a setback.

chance that some will be rescheduled, but yeah, not the best news

College hoops virus protocols are a hash. W&M is pausing 14 days because a Tier 1 person (player, coach, direct official) tested positive, but the CAA leaves length of shutdown to institutional discretion, along with state, local and campus health types.

Meanwhile, the ACC will leave pause lengths to CDC, local and state guidelines and contact tracing. The SEC, Pac-12, Atlantic 10, Southern conference, among others, will leave it up to institution. Ohio Valley teams are supposed to shut down for 14 days if a Tier 1 person tests positive. In the Mid-American, anyone who tests positive must isolate for 10 days, and teams then determine if they can practice and play.

Teams have to play a minimum of 13 games against D1 opponents to be considered for NCAA Tournament. Va. Tech coach Mike Young was asked a couple weeks ago if he'd take a 20-game schedule (most teams scheduled in the 25-27 game range). He said he'd take it in a heartbeat and that getting in 20 games would be "remarkable."

In related basketball/virus news, my 5th grader ended up making that travel team. After getting upset after the first tryout, he had a talk w/ the wife. She told him to just have fun and look at it as a chance to practice. He chilled out and ended up having fun.

We cut our check seven days ago. He had his first practice six days ago (two days before T-giving). Was his only practice so far. The Governor just announced today that all indoor sports are shut down for at least the month of December. So we went through that whole process for one practice! Hoping the cooties die down by January so the season isn't a wash.

I blame the filthy youth hockey players, who were the source of a couple dozen NJ outbreaks.

Good luck TR, I'm sure everyone will make good choices in December ;|

I will pass on the Heart biopic, unless it does not have any of their music. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

That's Crazy on You, Magic Man. Never would I say that. What about love?

Watch it TR, or I'm going to work to have you Barr-a-cudad from this website.

I think Heart’s 70’s material is way better than people give them credit for, and their material after then is way worse than people give them credit for. Even people who hate it.

Started the podcast "Whistleblower" today, who in this instance is Tim Donaghy. Only two in....what's the podcast equivalent of a page-turner?

Enjoy Dan. I found it pretty eye opening, and crushed most of it on a few recent bike rides.
