Something to Say

Apologies to Teej. I will need to revisit that comedic, simpler time in a minute, but I have something to say.  Just to dampen the mood.

This story is just horrible:

Read if you can stomach it. Jesus.

My significant other is part of the general counsel team for a multibillion-dollar American chain of discount variety stores that sell items for $1 or less. Their company is now firmly wedged between the wretched rock and hard place of not protecting their employees from COVID (by enforcing mask wearing) versus not protecting their employees from violence. I guess you have to save your people from violence first, which makes you seem like an employer who doesn't care about the pandemic. It's acknowledged fully that there simply exist citizens of our country who, when told that they must wear a satisfactory facial covering to protect themselves and others from a virus that has recently claimed 670,000 human lives, will become enraged resort to physical harm, in some cases extreme.

This is a given.  I just can't process that very well.

Because this is Gheorghe: The Blog, I will try.

That's the best I can muster to lighten the mood. But no. It doesn't work.

One of the understated gross elements of a really gross story was this quote:
A Trader Joe’s crew member at the Murray Hill location who witnessed the events told Motherboard that upon entering the store, the men told an employee that masks would not be necessary after the upcoming election—seeming to suggest that Donald Trump would be reelected in November.
And here's what I have to say.

The cerebrally stunted, emotionally ruined boy posing as a man that was put into office has unleashed the least civilized, most dishonorable parts of many American citizens and has granted utter refuge and pedestal for the true sociopaths and unhinged, well-past-redeemable detriments to society that now run hideously amok among the general population.  The bravest, boldest, and strongest of the voting contingent that elected Donald Trump will be those that concede -- without any accompanying attempts at justification whatsoever -- that it was a grave, egregious mistake that has not garnered anything close to their intended result, and that the next four years must be a universally dedicated and concerted effort among all of upstanding society to undo the ills of 2016-2020 and restore civility and dignity and decency to a country that desperately needs it. And while aberrations from those principles happen everywhere, their orchestrated abandon cannot. Daily terror as status quo must be loudly and forcefully excoriated in unison, and those who propagate it should find and eventually fear starkly punitive consequential retribution for enacting any form of it.

The likelihood of people mustering the courage to admit that they were very wrong but are now fully committed to rectifying the state of things not merely by casting a ballot but by demanding decency of some threshold . . . well, those chances may be up there with aeronautic swine, but I'd be satisfied with even one voice making such a proclamation.  Just one.  That would be a start.

That's all.

preach, brother. there are a growing number of ex-republicans who are very vocal right now. in some cases, they’re making a better anti-trump argument than the democrats are. more power to them.

A small part of me is itching for a confrontation w/ folks like this. I know punching people like them In the face repeatedly doesn’t bring positive change, and would be personally detrimental on many levels, but I spend fleeting moments thinking about doing it.

That crap debate has now spread like a virus to LinkedIn. So hard to not get baited by those d-bags.

I've had similar thoughts, TR. What's sadder for me is I would likely get my ass kicked or be killed.

I’m an ex-Republican who didn’t vote for Donnie in the first place. This administration has been an abomination and I hope and pray that we can change direction in the fall.

That said, even with that change, there is a political reckoning that needs to happen in this country. The two parties we have to choose from are self serving corporate entities that do little to represent the views of the voters they are trying to target. Had Amy Klobuchar and Mayor Pete not pulled out of the race, we would be prepping for Trump vs. Sanders. Are you fucking kidding me? A real dyed in the wool, blow the whole fucking thing up, generally disliked by democrats socialist vs. an infantile, racist, incoherent, narcissistic man-child? Those would have been the two options?!?!

Combine that with a media (on both sides) that has little interest in journalism and only cares about creating self-confirming content for their breathless, drooling, political pablum ingesting masses and you have the total breakdown of political dialogue in the country. This Vice “article” is a fucking joke. It’s a hit piece on Trader Joe’s masquerading as journalism. Trader Joe’s only crime (and apparently Whole Foods as well by association) was not being as progressive as the author thinks they should be.

This country needs at least one if not two additional political parties. AOC and Joey B should not be in the same party. Nor should Mitt and Don the Con.

I too am one of those ex repubs. I'm at a loss with a handful of pals and half of my immediate family, all of whom are either fairly intelligent or very good people or both....it doesn't matter what the guy does. And to Marls' point, the root of the issue is the 2 party system.
Btw...currently several hrs into day drinking at one of Mark's haunts Hammock Beach....last minute jaunte w the fam. Smokin a cigar too. Life sucks and is great simultaneously.

I could not agree more. As an ex-republican who now identifies as a libertarian, I’m resigned to the mission: get us out of this current couldn’t-be-worse regime and into a place we’re reasonableness is at least a tolerable notion. Only then can we take steps toward normalcy.

Those grammar mistakes are auto correct and I can’t figure out how to fix them.

It’s good to have the Norfolk legal community here supporting G:TB. Welcome.

Marls said...

BTW, we aren’t getting campaign finance reform until you break the two party system. Why would they change a thing at this point?

Whitney said...

Agree with all of the above. Except for the part about Brentford.

My younger guy smoked a double against a good pitcher tonight. Today was his 11th birthday. I caught it on my iPhone. Amid all the chaos and uncertainty in my family’s life these days, seeing my kid succeed and stand at second and clap his hands and grin from ear to ear while his teammates hollered was a good moment. A damn good moment.
