Faux-gazi Filler for the Weekend

The past was terrific.

But I do not weep for the future.

Happy Saturday. Get out there and kick this much ass.

The kid with the cowbell is just happy to be there.

your tribe are 5.5-point home favorites against towson. the tigers have won five straight, and they often give w&m trouble with their physicality. if we're for real, this is one we should win.

The School of Rock in our town had kids playing at the annual festival/street fair a couple years ago. My family saw a bunch of 12-16 year olds do a killer version of Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls. Made me very happy.

Reposting two two comments that I put on the old post:

Coached my kids basketball team to their first victory this morning. My kid had 7 of our 16. Fun morning.

Did I go on Amazon last Sunday and buy a UNC-Wilmington T-shirt? You’re god damn right I did. Just showed up this afternoon.

New comment: I’m sitting in moving room watching two basketball games on my large TVs. It’s basketball season in my home and that makes me very happy.

Happy National Irish Coffee Day. Have one.

Wow. My phone had a senior moment and I had to re-enter name and PW. And it spat out Clarence. It’s been a while, old friend.

Ordinarily Mark buying the gear of a Tribe conference foe would be uncool, but in this case, pretty cool.

Sea Hawk Down?
The Burke?

Rob’s Dad is not a well known name in mainstream basketball circles but he’s a North Carolina legend and deeply respected in the coaching community. He’s got two former players on NBA staffs. Nate McMillan (Head Coach...Bob was on Nate’s first staff in Portland before suffering a heart attack) and Fred Vinson (shooting coach for the Pelicans), mutiple NJCAA Final Four appearances, over 500 wins, and a court named after him at my former school. If Rob gained even a third of his Dad’s wisdom, smarts and general “fuck you” demeanor then he’s well positioned for success.

If you want to know what young Bob Burke looked like you can check out my Twitter header. It’s Bob, Jim Valvano and Tim Brando. Also, based on that resume I just gave you on Bob, you can probably guess how he reacted to a brash, headstrong kid from Florida who wasn’t exactly a paragon of coachability.

On a related topic, I went to my first ever high school basketball game in the 8+ years I have lived in my town. Was super-fun to see kids giving everything they have. We lost to a better team, but hung in there. And it cost me a total of $9 ($7 for tix, $2 for candy).

High school basketball games are fun. As I’ve discussed here before, me and a bunch of other guys I play with scrimmage one of the local high school teams each summer. They play in the second largest classification in Florida and usually win their district (at minimum). Because of this, I go watch them a few times a year. It’s often not great basketball but they play hard as hell and really care. Competition is fun. And, as TR mentioned, it’s a cheap night.

This Kobe Bryant news...oh my God.

TR said...

Right after LBJ passed him, too. Awful.

That’s some bad shit

I play ball with a bunch of younger guys. Guys who grew up with Kobe like my generation grew up with Jordan. Difficult to overstate what he meant to that generation of basketball players, which is, largely most of today’s NBA population. Might not be a bad idea to call the rest of today’s games.

I feel like the Vail allegations have to be a small part of his life story, but as I learn more about his off-the-court life, I am more and more impressed by him. The sports academy, the film endeabors, his other philanthropic activities. He had a motor that few had. Sad that the motor stopped so suddenly.

TR, might be a good time to re-surface your "pandemic vs epidemic" post.

TR said...

That was not me, but I'm on my way to Blockbuster to rent Outbreak right now.

The comments on the Pandemic post are fantastic.

What happened to little DeBlas’ radio career?

zman said...

He left radio for standup. He's often very funny.

I’m watching the Kobe farewell game because it feels appropriate. I do wish they were showing his 81 point game though.

Our solid run of posts came and went. Need some filler, peeps.
