Pele Did It First

While we eagerly await Day Nine of Gheorghemas, a brief interlude to acknowledge Pelé's passing. There are a great many wonderfully written tributes to O Rei spread across the internet, and I'm not qualified to match them. I'll just post this video, which I saw for the first time this week. It demonstrates in clear relief just how far ahead of his time the great Brazilian was - so many moves that became associated with the luminaries of later decades were things Pelé did first, and often decades prior.

Enjoy this genius, who showed what was possible.

Danny Boy, what we have here is the makings of a barnburner. I hope. ND looks tough.

Whitney said...

Well, that was a barnburner and then went south

and then north

i'll be in orlando in two weeks for college cheer nationals and in new smyrna beach the weekend of the daytona 500 for my nephew's wedding if any of you floridians feel like traveling. or watching college cheer.

Was wondering if Dan made his way to the Gator bowl. Fun game.

alert: tennessee has a wideout named squirrel white!

a lot of kids from my town go to tennessee or clemson. surprising, at least to me. not less surprising, the fact that my wife declared that we should watch the game without any prompting from me. one of my little one's high school cheer teammates is on the dance team at clemson. you'll probably see her if you watch the game. but you won't know who she is.

not sure if this is a) a sign of degeneracy, b) a sign that i'm bored with legal gambling, or c) brilliant handicapping, but i made $60 bucks betting on the american/lafayette hoops game this evening. johnny o'neil ftw.

tennessee/clemson was a great one team cares more betting opportunity. that i didn't take.

I did not make it to the game but thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I did walk 18 holes in shorts and short sleeves as it was a beautiful day here. About to do the same again shortly. As an aside, Darius Rucker played in front us yesterday...he's good!
Rob, keep gamblin. Maybe while we wait for Day 9 (take your time Marls, seriously) you could provide us your expert take on tonight's games.

I enjoyed a successful mini-summit yesterday with Squeaky, Mrs. Squeaky, and Son of Squeaky, with a special guest appearance from Doc Saunders. Everything in Manhattan from Penn Station to the southern border of Central Park smells like San Francisco now.

Weeeeeed! It’s my wife’s birthday today. Luckily we’re old so she’s totally cool with spending the evening at home so I get to watch these semifinal games that are scheduled on the worst possible day.

I’ll be a good husband and cook a bunch of shit. Tomahawk ribeyes, crawfish, etc etc.

Damn, Mark. Sounds excellent.

The Cocks played hard yesterday — especially given that they were without 9 key players to ND’s 4 — but the Irish are stout. Good game all the way through. Unlike the Orange Bowl, which my girls were calling the Beamer Bowl.

Whitney said...

I haven’t seen Doc Saunders in years. Hope he’s well. And mini-summits are wonderful. May they be even more plentiful in 2023.

Mark said...

Agreed, Whit. The wife and are are going to be in VA in May for a few days would be great to set up something larger than a mini summit.

maxi summit!

i don’t think anyone gets within two touchdowns of georgia. no idea what to make of tcu/michigan.

Mark, send those dates for May

And happy New Year’s Eve from Paris, les Gheorghies

Le Gheorgheoisie?

Whitney said...

Good one, Z

And I’m in for the maxi if at all possible

Whitney said...

No talk of papal passing?

Happy New Year Gheorghies. Those games were epic.
The wind down of the latter contest, you just had to know was going to come to a close near or at the exact moment of the ball dropping. Murphy's Law and all. The host of a little get together we attended changed the channel as OSU was lining up to kick the FG. Utterly shocked that he did so but he lived in the end.
