As Jules would say, "Example."
"Superman," R.E.M.
"Hurt," Johnny Cash
"Tainted Love," Soft Cell
"The Man Who Sold the World," Nirvana
"All Along the Watchtower," Jimi Hendrix
"Hallelujah," Jeff Buckley
"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," Violent Femmes
"Sea of Love," Cat Power
"Trapped," Bruce Springsteen
"Renegades of Funk," Rage Against the Machine
"I Love Rock & Roll," Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
So I never really knew or cared about Britney Spears' song "Toxic." I can't believe I'm embedding a Britney song at G:TB, but it provides context.
Yes, please.
I can't turn it off.
These ladies are leaving Toronto and hitting the US this summer. Look for them in NYC, Asbury Park, and Dunellen, NJ in August.

Is that Busy Philipps in the middle? I dig her attitude.
JD and the Staight Shot does an amazing version of, hm, nothing.
Instantly brought back memories of a few covers I liked back in the day.
Charlie Hunter Trio "Come As You Are" https://youtu.be/H4iAMx-nS6Y Jazz take on the song. Video shows CH playing his 8 string guitar where he plays the guitar and bass parts.
Mynabirds "The House that Heaven Built" https://youtu.be/kvpPwno7lUM Stark compared to the loudness of the Japandroids. Sounds better on vinyl than on this rip from youtube.
This cover then promptly lead me into a Japandroids listening black hole this morning.
Z, the blonde? Love her. Her thigh is winsome.
Squeaker, you know the Mynabirds, but do you know the 60's group the Mynah Birds?
A six-pack to whomever can name the two unlikeliest bandmates that were in the Mynah Birds...
You guys will all peek, so the answer is Neil Young and Rick James. If Rick James hadn't been arrested for being AWOL from the Navy reserves, the Mynah Birds could've ascended beyond their one single and been a very interesting band. Or not.
Come on Whit, don't give the answer to your own trivia questions! I didn't need to peek to answer that one, as I'm sure many other music snobs here didn't either.
Sorry, Rootsy. I should have believed in you. I don't believe in any of the other clowns here where these matters are concerned, but please do me a favor and don't tell them I said so.
Well, after the Whitful information on the Mynah Birds, I've learned something new today which means time for a beer.
I'm sure I've said it here before but I'll say it again because I'm repetitive ... Sturgill Simpson does some damn fine covers. "The Promise" is my favorite and "In Bloom" is good too.

And when I went to get that link I found this!

I believe it was first brought to my attention at this location years ago, but the Cee Lo cover of Band of Horses' No One's Gonna Love You is better than the original.
Charles Bradley for the win! RIP.
Listening to the Cee Lo BoH cover. Just listened to Sturgill's "The Promise." Had not heard either.
Thanks for the recs, dudes. Keep 'em coming.
The Black Keys covered Jerry Butler and it's good.

dunellen! love that town.
by the way, i know it's a long shot, but TR and zman are possibles . . . we are having a quatro de mayo happy hour and all gheorghies are welcome. as always, i am steeping some spicy tequila for the event.
did not know superman is a cover. one of my favorite songs . . .
in phoenix for the first time. it’s 72 degrees and beautiful. i don’t get the sense that’s the normal way of things here.
my cousin said that they give you ice bags with your groceries in phoenix, so they don't cook in the car on the way home. 72 might be a record low . . .
It’s cuatro de Mayo, and that’s the most Dave idea ever. Unfortunately my wife is inculcating my 8 y/o into the cult of Catholicism, and we have church crap and a big family party on Cinco de Mayo/Dios.
¡Dios mío!
Quattro de Mayo is the one day only 0.0% financing event at Audi.
Vaya con dios, bruh.
I just heard the Wallows on Alt Nation. TR!
I have decided I think this sounds like Peter Bjorn and John.
Bjorn again?
Cake's cover of War Pigs by Sabbath. Get some.
Treepeople - Big Mouth Strikes Again
i’m a sucker for dum dum girls’ cover of ‘there is a light that never goes out’
I think I posted a link before on this fine blog, but David Byrne covering Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody is fantastic.
https://youtu.be/izx8J6U7xzo
Burning Down the House cover Tom Jones and Nina Presson (Cardigans) https://youtu.be/iYuldgIOelY
This was from an album of covers by Tom Jones called "Reload". At one point I owned it on cd. It had few good tunes but some covers were awful at best. It was like a train wreck you could not look away.
In my opinion, Otis doing Satisfaction and Camper Van Beethoven's Interstellar Overdrive are two examples of the cover version eclipsing the original.
I'm a huge CCR guy, but Ike and Tina's "Proud Mary" is better than the original.
I'll second that Teedge. It's better by a lot, and I love Creedence too.
Devo’s Satisfaction is far less soulful but fun. Same with their take on Working in the Coalmine. Which I played for Dave 1000 times in college.
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen
Billy Joel & Robert Plant covering Love Removal Machine.
Death Letter Blues by the White Stripes. I saw them perform it live on MTV and that's when I realized they were legit, not a gimmick. I immediately went out and got De Stijl.
Trump's lawyers are so bad (how bad are they?), they don't know the difference between "roll" and "role." Sad! Needs a new ghosttweeter.
Ichiro hanging up the cleats
but we’re not hanging up the ichiro
Cmon Z! Jack White would not even take his guitar out of the case if San House was on the scene! I will admit that Mr. House had lost some of his vitality when he recorded in the 60s. His 1930s recordings however, are tops!
Cmon rootsy! Clearly Son House > Jack White (Prof. Simon would retroactively fail me if I thought otherwise) but the White Stripes's cover of Death Letter Blues is damn fine. I was impressed that they even knew enough to cover Son House. Since then I understand that they're legit musicians.
Billy Idol owns two of my fave covers...Simple Minds’ Don’t Yiou Forget About Me and The Doors’ LA Woman.
Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt is pretty good too, though depressing.
townes van zandt doing "dead flowers" is a great one. on the big lebowski soundtrack.
although i'm pretty liberal with this award, i gave zman comment of the year on sentence of dave today . . .
Ring of Fire, the Social D version, might have been played 10,000 times at Unit M.
Thank you Celts for making this a game. I need something to do while I drink scotch.
McHale and the other stiff doing the game are oblivious, but this big Celts comeback has come when Brad Stevens went with a huge lineup: Thornton and Monroe together, w/ Brown at the 3. Monroe was very physical w/ Embiid.
Danimal’s powers of observation lacking. Read original post.
And I hung up the Ichiro last summer. Sucks.
Seriously, Danimal. Get it together.
3 mins left in game. Ben Simmons has 1 pt, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Maybe we can all tap the brakes before we anoint him as Magic 2.0.
wait. whitney hung up the ichiro? do we need to have a ceremony? or an intervention?
candidly, this is not the intervention i thought i would have to have with him.
Do tell
oh. sorry.
