I am fit as a goddam fiddle, alternatively titled "The Streak Redux"

Almost four years ago I touted my Peloton purchase in a Gheorghemas post.  I have continued to use it regularly and although I haven't been able to drop my weight significantly below 169 pounds (and really, why would I want to) I am fit as a goddam fiddle.  I routinely crank out rides of 11-13 kJ per minute (Danimal scoffs at that) and work up a mighty sweat but cool down in about five minutes.  When I'm not doing rides I'm lifting weights or doing yoga.  Not heavy weights or good yoga, but I'm trying (I hate lifting weights).  If I'm away from home I'll do a run on the hotel treadmill or even outside (!) on the street.  I have convinced myself that this shit is fun, worthwhile, and too expensive to collect dust in the basement.

So thorough is this self-inflicted Jedi mind trick that yesterday I completed my 365th day in a row of doing at least one Peloton activity.  A streak, if you will.  rob's wife streaked with me.  She also participated in the ride I took to make the streak one year long.

Some of you will remember my last streak which ran sometime during the spring semester of 1996 when I went after Buck's house record for most consecutive nights out.  This was a streak of an entirely different tone and tenor than my current health kick.  Eventually I broke the record, and when I saw Buck I told him so.  He replied "I don't remember setting a record like that" which means his streak destroyed his memory or he was full of shit when he told an impressionable freshman about his drinking exploits.

Unlike my streak of 1996, I feel no pressure with this one.  In fact I feel good!  I'm not keeping it alive just to say I did, I'm enjoying myself.  I'm sure this streak will come to an end but it won't be a relief when it does.

  1. I am decidedly not fit as a fiddle right now and it bums me out. I’m in the “bumming dome” to steal a phrase from everyone’s favorite purveyor of cars in Orange, VA. I’m inspired by Zfitness.

As a frequent wingman for Zed’s 1996 streak, I can confirm that a run of consecutive nights drinking pitchers of cheap beer and ripping lung darts is not a highway to fitness, even in your early 20s.

  2. I'm not sure how I'd react if I saw Zman jogging down the street. It's not something I'd expect to see.

The streak of '96 was a real grind. It's even better with the revelation that Buck doesn't even remember his streak. Did it even happen?

  3. how long was the streak of 96?

  4. Four years, if you were to ask the streaker's roommate.

  5. Or a lifetime? I think it lasted 40-some-odd days. Marls was a trooper, chipping in on Tuesdays when everyone else was too smart to go to the Leafe. rootsy stoically suffered through my late night returns to our room, banging into things while smelling of beer and nicotine.

  6. bo noonan had a fairly epic streak back in the 80s, but i don’t know the specific total

  7. 40+ days seems right. I'm a pretty sound sleeper, so the many late night 'bong hit calls' from Braxton Court in the summer of 95 are more memorable.

  8. my wife was impressed by z's prowess. on the bike. sadly, all that riding may have impacted other things.

  12. I certainly won't celebrate it, but I will be naive enough to hope it increases awareness of the limited efficacy of thoughts and prayers.

  14. Took our dog to the vet today for her twice weekly bandage change and check up. Her wound is healing but we’re not out of the woods yet. Still have at least another two weeks of severely restricted movement (she’s basically locked in my office with me all day) and more check ups.

  15. sadly rob, i'm not on the peleton very often but do keep a daily regiment of swim, big walks w/big weight vest, moving real estate in the gym (weights), core, etc. nor do i get on my bike which am about to unload here soon. too many wrecks out there.

  17. Because TR isn't here anymore to say it, today is a somber day. I always feel weird about going through my daily routine on September 11. This should be a national day of remembrance. Next year is 25 years.

  18. i do *not* routinely crank out 11-13kj/minute. maybe 10 if i'm really going for it.

  19. Agreed, Z. Playing some Grateful Dead for Mike Edwards, and some Miami Sound Machine for Lud.

  20. impressed by both streaks (and any streaking) and wondering how big your beer gut was after the going out streak and how big your quads are now-- you must be jacked!

i am also plagued by memories of 9/11, being in syria, lud and edwards, and all that. weird now that to the high school kids, 9/11 is an event like woodstock (which one of my students recently confused with live aid . . . it's all one concert now)

  21. Zman has always been jacked. The first streak coincided with his first natural prime. He just has the self discipline to stay fit while the rest of us schlubs let ourselves go.

  22. is there such a thing as an unfit fiddle? and why are fiddles fit?

  23. I have never been jacked. I'm physiologically incapable of bulking up. Even in high school when I ate a lot and lifted I only got stronger but not bigger. At the end of my 96 streak I was probably about 20 pounds lighter than I am today. I definitely got fatter than I ought to be in 2020, about 20 pounds heavier than I am today.
