As you all remember, Jack Urbont obtained a default judgment against Ghostface Killah in his copyright case involving his "Iron Man Theme." On January 20, he moved for summary judgment against the remaining defendants Sony Music Etnertainment and Razor Sharp Records.
The brief itself isn't exactly a riveting read and now that GFK isn't involved the matter isn't quite as entertaining (at least for me). But I plan to see this thing through to a final judgment for the sake of completeness. Somewhat entertaining was this piece of a transcript from the deposition of one of Sony's in-house lawyers:
Seems unlikely to me that anyone in the music business doesn't know the RZA's real name, especially in light of the fact that the RZA has the production credit for "Intro" and "Iron's Theme - Conclusion," the songs from "Supreme Clientele" at issue in this case. And he's named in Urbont's Rule 26 initial disclosures. But who would pay attention to stuff like that?
Up next: the defendants' responsive brief! I suspect their legal maneuvering will not be mere child's play.

ReplyDeleteHey Squeaky, you doing ok up there?
ReplyDeleteif any of you folks in the DC area know someone looking to rent a place, the baconbaking 1 br/1 bath condo will be back on the market at the end of the month
ReplyDeletehit me up
now back to your regularly scheduled dipshittery
We are in the process of getting another 12 inches of snow. So it looks like like 44" over the past 10 days.
ReplyDeleteSnow days are no fun with kids when you have business calls all day long. I should have called in sick but already did that last week.
I am a robot.
The only good thing is the 8' high pile of snow at the end of the driveway will continue to build up our small sledding hill.
ReplyDeleteBeep. Bloop.
I mean, is there any legitimate reason to deny knowing a guy is called RZA? I'm looking for the strategic angle there.
ReplyDeleteLooking for the next thing to watch on NetFlix - should I go Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror or Orange is the New Black (and should I have used an Oxford comma there? Don't think so)?
The Facebook machine tells me Marls has a birthday today. Happy birthday Mr. Marls.
ReplyDeleteI'm two episodes into the first season of American Horror Story and I'm not completely sold yet. I've heard great things about Peaky Blinders and I might switch over to that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Happies, Marls.
ReplyDeleteFor the beer snobs in the crowd, Sierra Nevada just did another one off BeerCamp brew with Ballast Point Brewery for the spring called Hoppy Lager. It's only available in 12 packs but worth it. If you can find it.
Bleep. Bleep.
Rashean Mathis sighting today at my favorite deli.
ReplyDeleteThat's today's "celebrity" sighting with....Danimal
I just finished the first episode of Peaky Blinders. I've watched all the Black Mirror episodes available. I really like Black Mirror but its definitely not for everyone.
ReplyDeleteWe watched most of the second season and part of the third of America Horror Story. I could not get through to the finales because they just seemed to be throwing a bunch of weird around to see if anything stuck. There was not enough forward momentum in the plot.
ReplyDeleteI might also start with Broad Church. Heard very good things about it.
Do NOT mess with warren sapp. Classy.
ReplyDeleteThanks gents for the birthday wishes. 40 ain't all that bad.
ReplyDeleteI guess Warren won't be staring in the next "No More" spot. That said, it just points to the disgusting double standard that exists for on field talent. If Warren Sapp was still playing he would be likely be suspended but there would be talk of "innocent until proven guilty" and giving him the benefit of the doubt, which is all just a BS cover for protecting your investment in a finite resource like all pro defensive tackles. The moment he becomes and ex jock with a mic in his hand he becomes totally expendable and is shit canned in under 12 hours.
The NFL network did the right thing here but it just underscores how wrong they handle on field talent.
Happy Birthday Marls!
ReplyDeleteAnd I just started watching The Americans--totally digging it.
Here's the question I always have: when a glut of famous people get arrested doing something, doesn't logic dictate that many, many more people like them are doing the same thing and not getting caught? The oldest profession is still alive and well, but in America, are that many of our talking heads getting . . . the same from paid participants?
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Marls. I hope to get very drunk with you again soon.
ReplyDeleteThe Americans is terrific.
I do like that there are mini-summits sprouting up here and there, but are there any legit G:TB summits for 2015?
ReplyDeleteother than obft, you mean?
