The Act of Making Love is a Car with 73,000 miles

People across the blogosphere have been crying out for another "What Would zman Drive" post. Today's your lucky day!

The BMW 8 series came out in 1989 and at the time it was remarkably stylish. Twenty-six years later it's remarkably dated.

The low beltline, small wheels, slab sides, and absence of chrome scream "1990s" and not in a great way. The absolute killer though are the pop-up headlights. Even GM gave up on the Corvette's pop-ups in 2004, a design feature on that model since 1963.

As a result, you can pick up a pristine 8 series with about 70,000 miles for around $11,000 according to kbb.com. And that's for the 850i, the one with the V-12 engine (as opposed to the 840i with a V-8) making 295 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. It's certainly an affordable option if you're in the market for a 12 cylinder toy.

A guy in Indiana wants $14,000 for his 1991 850i with 73,000 miles. Seems like a pretty steep mark-up over book value until you read the ad. This car is, allegedly, the same 850i featured in LL Cool J's video for "Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag Getting Crushed by Buildings"!

My favorite part of the ad is the last photo--the cover of "14 Shots to the Dome." If I were in the market for historic rides from "14 Shots" videos I'd go with the Pathfinder from "Back Seat (Of My Jeep)" especially if it still had that wood steering wheel and vanillaroma tree.

I expect a stampede of our midwestern readers (DB?) is heading to Indiana right this moment to get their hands on this gem.

  1. Let me know if you see a listing for the Jeep used for Terminator X's Valley of the Jeep Beats.

  2. I took the liberty of linking this post to the other "what would zman drive" post on the very very off chance that there's someone out there who hasn't read it.

  3. My dad has a good friend who's a longtime indie german car mechanic, and he claims that all bmw models starting with an even number are pieces of shit.

  4. Not to be confused with Vanillanova.

  5. BMW now calls the 3-series coupe a 4 and the 1-series coupe a 2. I don't know if they are shittier than their odd-numbered brethren but they are literally the same car that was sold under an odd number 18-or-so months ago. And the 6 is essentially a 5-series coupe and has been for years. Maybe he was referring to the old 6 series from the 1980s?

  6. What is the dangerman URL?

    Still a robot.

  7. Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960, is set to release her second novel.

The book is tentatively titled To Kill a Mockingbird II: Electric Boogaloo, though the publishing house said that may be subject to change.

  8. Dan Quinn was W&M's defensive line coach in 1994? So he coached for a team on which Mike Tomlin played?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Quinn was the first to give Jude Waddy PEDs.

  10. Anybody else just spill half a Sam Adams in their briefcase on an Amtrak train? Just this slob?

  11. TR, the fact you have briefcase beers is nothing short of inspiring.

And Mark, can I trust you'll be keeping us fully updated on signing day activities tomorrow?

  12. I'm solo on a train to Beantown. I get there at 4:45. I have a little bit of work, but nothing pressing. And the train is full of Massholes in Pats gear. I can only imagine the scene during my meetings tmrw, the day of the parade. I'm wearing a Jets scarf. Instead of jeers, I expect to get odd smiles. You know, the kind people give to Special Olympians who just ran a 100-yd dash in 45 seconds.

Essentially, I couldn't find a good reason not to.

  13. TR, if I wasn't lazy or flying out of town tomorrow, I would have made the trek into Boston for a drink or two.

I guess you could hang with Paci.

  14. I don't see briefcases too much these days. Are you wearing galoshes by chance? (Sp?)

  15. It's pronounced guh-LAW-shiz in Boston.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Or rubbahz.

    But TR doesn't wear those.

  17. Pink Cookies is one of the worst songs in the history of hip hop. I'm a little angry right now just thinking about it.

Mayhugh- I won't be doing a post for NSD but ill keep y'all updated in the comments. Could be a monster day for Florida. Probably wont be though. Bridge classes from one Head Coach to another very rarely are.

  20. z guy. at last week's helmet fest/pga show, bridgestone golf had in its "booth" the "I" series coupe. Not the little mini model they did the commercial for at the super bowl, but a bad ass version of what is posted here. it was out of this world awesome.

  21. have been walking around the streets of Philadelphia this evening. if you haven't been to del frisco's, it's worth it just to walk in the joint. pretty impressive.

  22. Daniel-san, I believe you saw an i8. I haven't seen one in the flesh but from the photos it looks like something from Tron. It's $150k though so if I ever get a BMW that starts with an 8 it will be a 20 year old 850i with 70,000 miles.

  23. Rugby "buddy" had an early 8 series. Said the first time he took it over 100mph the windows and sunroof closed automatically. I thought that was cool but he was kind of a liar.

    Beers with Buckles tonight.

  25. "Ate fish" is a euphemism, right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. danimal, i've eaten at that del frisco's. it's so choice. if you have the means, i highly recommend it.

my company rented out the marvel section of universal orlando tonight. among other things, that meant multiple rides of the hulk coaster for this kid. best coaster i've ever ridden, even better after several beers.

  27. Just wait until you're tall enough to go on the grown-up rides. They're even better.

  28. Auburn/Muschamp have beat out Florida for 4 recruits so far today but Florida will still end up with a decent class and Muschamp isn't our coach anymore so I consider this a win.

Also, BYU signed a 6'7" 410 lb lineman from Tonga.

  29. Just 2 weeks ago Florida had a class ranked between 60-70 depending on the scouting service. They'll finish between 20-25. Great close by Jim McElwain. I think I like this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Impressive transition for Jim, from overpaid Sonics center hated by Kemp to stud recruiter in Gainesville.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Florida signed a guy named D'Anfernee since TR brought up 90s NBA players.

  32. Just walked by the Trellis and the music outside was 'One of These Days'.

    Incoming!
