The First Time... Ever I Saw Your Face... and Heard Your Jokes

It's pretty cool to see these fresh faces get their shot at the mountaintop. Carson. This is it.

Nervous. Fidgety. Almost each of them stammers or stumbles at least once.

And each of these people crushed it.

You all are in for a treat tonight, and I think you all sound like you're in the right mood for it, because this is a young comedian, this is their first time on the Tonight Show with us, and they're very funny.

They've come all the way from ____ to be with us, so won't you please give a warm welcome for...
Drew Carey, from Cleveland, OH - 11/8/91

Steven Wright, from Boston, MA - 8/6/82

Garry Shandling, from Tucson, AZ - 3/18/81

Ellen DeGeneres, from Metairie, LA - 11/28/86

Freddie Prinze, from New York, NY - 12/06/73

  1. This is a fantastic post. Love the old Carson clips. Great counterbalance to the amount of faux solemn fuckery going on today in remembrance of what took place 25 years ago. 99% of this sentimental bullshit can fuck right off.

  2. I agree. I’m sadder than I thought I’d be, but we lost real friends in a real tragedy that has nothing to do with flag-waving and other crap. Clare Ludvigsen texted me this AM with a silly picture of her and her brother in the Pi Lam pit being silly with me in the background. Followed by a broken heart emoji. That’s real love and that’s real. I dispense with the “faux solemn fuckery” and say watch the Carson clips. Cheers.

  3. I jump into the Carson Youtube wormhole on occasion. Never missed an episode during summer months as a kid. Loved that guy.
I did notice Garry was the only one who did not get the "come on over" directive from Johnny. Still worked out alright for him though. If anyone here has never watched the Garry Shandling Show, you've missed out.

  6. True, Dan. And Garry’s set was arguably the best written comedy. So good.
