Monday Morning Motivation

May this week bring you a moment or several that approach Shane Lowry's Sunday evening. The burly Irishman guaranteed Europe's retention of the Ryder Cup with a birdie on the 18th hole at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, NY to earn a draw against American Russell Henley. Catharsis on a world stage. Maybe yours won't be as dramatic, but I wish it for you regardless.

  2. Though I was in L.I.N.Y. most of week, I was only able to view the exhibition in person on Friday, arriving prior to 6am well in time for the first tee shots, and leaving property roughly 13 hours later. Even w/the ass-kicking, a fun day was had. We stayed as guests in the PGA of America hotel - PGA folks, family members of players, organizers, etc....players from both sides. On Fri eve (was pretty well oiled by then), met and shot the sh*t w/Lowery's dad for a good bit, along w/MacIntyre's parents, and Hatton's mom. All wonderful people. Mr. Lowery is the quintessential Irishman, weathered and grizzled, a former footballer and fond of the pint. Happy for he and his son and the rest of their team.

  4. Just saw One Battle After Another. Highly rec, with qualifier that it won't be for everybody. Defies easy description. Societal snapshot? Edgy satire? Father-daughter love story? Dysfunctional family aftermath? Beats me. What's without debate is that it's a helluva piece of filmmaking by Paul Thomas Anderson.

  5. here's something i never thought i'd say: spare a thought for the people of madagascar today. 22 killed and 100+ wounded in protests against the government's inability to provide adequate water and electricity. my wife's sister and her husband are there - he's a foreign service officer with the state department. it's a bit dicey at the moment.

  6. Yeesh, I hope they fare alright. Adding Madagascar to the list of countries I hope can get their shit together.

  7. Rob, good luck to your family and anyone else in harm's way.

Meanwhile, it looks like the federal government is going to shut down at midnight. Yippee.

  9. Yikes, Rob, sorry to hear about your sis-in-law and hubby. Hope it remains safe for them and he isn't forced to drop into sketchy areas and negotiations.

  10. first preseason training session for the huskies today. 10 minutes in a scrimmage, one freshman collides with another, totally innocuous. the collidee falls awkwardly, ends up breaking her collarbone in two places. good start!
