East Coast bias is real, in large part because time zones and sleep are real. As a recent example, I think one could credibly argue that people slept on the Denver Nuggets (pun intended after the fact) for most of the NBA season because they play most of their games in the Mountain or Pacific time zones.
Another contemporaneous case in point is the absurdity of the season Shohei Ohtani is having. The Angels' DH/P is making a mockery of decades of received baseball wisdom. After last night's 2-0 loss to the Dodgers, where Ohtani went 7 innings, gave up 5 hits and one run, and struck out 12 to take a hard-luck defeat, here's where he stands amongst major league players:
- 24 HR (first)
- 58 RBI (tied - first)
- 175 total bases (first)
- .616 SLG (first)
- .993 OPS (first)
- .377 OBP (top 20)
- 117 K pitching (3rd)
- 11.8 K/9 (2nd)
- 1.04 WHIP (7th)
- 89 IP (top 20)
- 3.13 ERA (top 20)

Ohtani is indeed a marvel, a treasure, and to use one of our curator's favorite descriptors: sui generis.
Going back to previous post comments, it's been a while since I've been to Vegas, but I kind of think it as excess, funhouse mirror America.
my kid and i are rolling to boulder via south bend and omaha in early august, so if you've got recommendations for food/drink in either of those places, holler at your boy.
Follow up on my Vegas comment from yesterday. It's not my favorite city but it's become an unbelievable food city and as most of you know that's half of what I do when I travel. I'm not a huge gambler but I like to play a bit and summer is the perfect time to make CFB and NFL future bets.
Also, Caesars has great pools and the weed is legal and easily accessible. Lastly, the trip coincides with NBA Summer League. Just bought tickets for that today. Giddyup.
qataris are buying a piece of the wizards and caps. it’s comin’, y’all.
Jordan Poole scoring an inefficient 32 a night on a tanking Wizards team
GET EXCITE
We sat behind Poole's folks at the Bulls-Warriors game in Chicago in January. Nice people. They are likely bummed for their son now.
Their son is getting paid $130M bucks to hoist up 30 shots a game in a zero-pressure environment.
Someone’s gotta do it
I was in Omaha yesterday Rob, first time ever. And no, I did not watch any baseball.
y'all gotta peep gradey dick's draft night suit. it's as if he lost a bet with the ghost of jalen rose's draft suit.
danimal, the hotel we booked is literally across the street from the stadium where the college world series is played. our timing, not so good.
i'm already a big wembanyama fan. and i think portland's gonna be glad they got scoot instead of miller.

Zman gets a shout-out on Dave’s latest podcast episode!
In the same paragraph as colonoscopies! Which is an inadvertent shoutout to zmom, who got a clean colonoscopy result yesterday (the outcome was in doubt due to a false positive Cologuard test).
Seems like this guy Otani may be pretty good. Not good enough for Charley Steiner to do the away call on the Dodgers radio broadcast for the recent series at the Angels' house, but pretty good nonetheless.
congrats zmom!
and thanks for informing me about this ohtani phenomenon-- had no idea this was happening. and i never made it to the second half of the nuggets/heat series-- fell asleep every time . . .

Qualified time check according to Boss Marles
Marls checks in when he wakes up to go to the bathroom.
I just pee in a diaper at this point.
That reminds me of my favorite Sentence of Dave.

Today I learned that John Popper used to be in the Spin Doctors. They were all buddies from Princeton High School.
Pour some out for my 2006 minivan’s transmission, which gave it up a few miles from where i was going to float the James River. Damn.
At least I’ve got a cooler of beer and can catch a ride back to town in a tow truck!
you were gonna try to float your minivan down the river? that’s badass.
I was planning on using my kayak, but it may come to that. Been waiting awhile. Edible timing would have been perfect on the river. Less so now.
Dave has some thoughts on cars, Rootsy. Good luck with yours.
I finally got a tow. From a 35 yr old guy who’d spent ages 14-30 IN PRISON, and has been towing 24-7 since he got out. He showed me a picture of his fourteen year old self where he already looked 24. Interesting ride.
Like Pip, he has been to prison and isn’t afraid to go back.
In car related news today, I changed out the battery and replaced my wiper blades. That’s about as mechanic-y as I get these days.
manimal!
Wait; there’s still a USFL?
Donald Trump still thinks the Generals are going to get home into the NFL.
He unequivocally killed the USFL once upon a time, but it’s resilient and will last into the future.
Like America.
went to a metal show with my oldest this evening. my kid is a 100-lb mosh tornado. much enjoy.
