A Few Words for Johnny G

As we relayed to you all a month or two ago, we lost our good buddy Johnny G to a bad ticker in December. A tough one, for sure. The William and Mary contingent decided to throw Johnny a reverent memorial in Williamsburg last weekend.

Okay a boozefest with equal parts camaraderie, old stories, and bourbon. God bless us for never straying from that modus operandi.

We did, however, add a tiny sliver of reverence amid the wistful fraternity party. Enjoy our speaking and singing (!).

If you're really good, maybe we'll show you the late night antics of three gheorghies and friends.

the prevailing emotion of the weekend was joy, despite the reason for our gathering. i'll remember (most of) it for a long time.

R.I.P. Such a nice guy.

I like that Scott M.(?) is giving the finger in the background of John's photo.

scott took a little bit of shit for that last weekend.

What a lovely tribute to Johnny and remembrance. You might’ve missed your calling there, Whit. Glad y’all did that.

Coming from you, D, that’s high praise! Thanks. It was really important that we did it, plus we got to hang on the back porch of Pi Lam for the first time in years.

i had a work dinner last night so i neglected to let you know that the tribe dropped another one, this time to elon. 4-17 on the year, 3-5 in conference. pretty, pretty bad.

my dog just spent 10 minutes trying to catch a hawk. that was flying about 100 feet above us. she's a lovely, sweet, goofy dog. but i'm starting to think she isn't all that bright.

zman hates ur dog

My dog would run away from the Hawk if it came within 200 feet. She's afraid of EVERYTHING. She is a fantastic sleeper though. I'd guess she sleeps around 16-18 hours a day.

Dogs have very low return on investment. The other day zwoman's dog woke up around 5:30 and when I took her out she saw a rabbit in the neighbor's yard and nearly pulled my arm out of the socket chasing after it. Then she turned around and saw a deer behind me in the other neighbor's yard and nearly pulled my arm out again, the whole time making sounds like the hound of the Baskervilles. Eventually she settled down and excreted her bodily wastes but that's not how I want to start my day.

Sounds like zman needs to strengthen those shoulders so he can walk HIS dog without injury.

We lost to Elon? They’re dreck. We’re worse.

rootsminer said...

What’s below dreck? Whale shit, I suppose.

My daughter came home stuffy and with a bit of a cough today. So, of course, we had to test her for COVID. Thankfully she’s negative. She’s missing tonight’s basketball game because, well, she’s sick. She also has a soccer tournament this weekend so I figured a night of rest would do her well for the next two days. I really fucking hate the world our kids have to live in.

Good morning Gheorghies! Windy and I. The 40s down here today. Gonna make for a tough day of soccer viewing from the sidelines. At the gym earlier than usual due to said soccer. Pretty sure I’m the only guy working out to The Cure/The Smiths/Depeche Mode. Pretty sure.

30-35 years ago, when I looked out my window and saw snow I thought of all the money I was going to make shoveling driveways. Now when I look out my window and see snow I think of all the water that's going to end up in my sump pump.

Zman’s comment has The Smiths playing in the background

lovely words for johnny . . .

It’s cold a this tournament but you’d think it was last Saturday in Green Bay the way people are dressed. Don’t worry though, your boy is warm and stylish.

zwoman's dog turns into cocaine bear in the snow.

your tribe up 11 at the half at home to elon. let’s see how we fuck this up, shall we?

rob said...

phoenix had the ball down three with seven seconds left. tribe pull it out.

Mark said...

Always love a good Cocaine Bear reference.

rob said...

i think the gtb crest would feature cocaine bear

Mark said...

That’s an accurate statement.

Soccer update. 1-1 on the day without our best player and my kid (good, not great) at 50% at best. A win tomorrow morning puts the Indialantic Force in the Finals. Prayers up.

I never met Johnny but after watching that I wish I had. Well done and RIP.

Mark said...

It will be 36 degrees when I wake up tomorrow. This is not what I signed up for.

rootsminer said...

Good luck Mark. Hopefully it’s warmer by game time.

I finally got the time and space to watch the video this morning. A lovely tribute. I wish I could have been there. Johnny was a special guy. I only got to meet him at a few OBFTs, and he’s certainly someone I’ll never forget.

No wind today so it wasn’t bad at all. Unfortunately, the good guys lost to a team they’d beaten twice previously by a score of 2-1.

Mark said...

Are we all Bengals fans today?

Mark said...

Nantz just dropped a Shooter McPherson on us. Legend.

Marls said...

Ickey Woods!

Whitney said...

The Bengals! Wow. They lost to the Bears and the Jets and had to make a last second kick to beat the Jags. Exciting.
