Because the public demanded it: zman's Shazams are back!

To help us move on from dogs, dogshit, and dogs eating dogshit, I will throw up (pun!) my latest Shazams.

First up is "Walking at a Downtown Pace" by Parquet Courts.  I'm getting hit with it by WFMU, WFUV, and Spotify so you've probably heard it by now too.  It's a complete earworm.

How have I never heard "Cold Turkey" by John Lennon before?

rootsy will recognize Billy Stewart's "Sitting in the Park" as the inspiration for Slick Rick's "Sitting in my Car."

I know Whit loves the Beach Boys so he's very familiar with "San Miguel."  Sounds like something from the Sir Douglas Quintet.

G:TB needs more disco and Loleatta Holloway has it with "Hit and Run."  It's precisely what you think it's about.

Rex Doane knows that zkids named their dog Ivy because on Saturday he played "My Girl Ivy" by Jimmy Witherspoon.

I don't know much about The Rezillos but I assume TR is involved.  "Flying Saucer Attack" sounds like something Greasetruck would create, minus all the fuzz and distortion.

This is Tom T. Hall's song about the time he almost starved to death in Roanoke, VA.  That's exactly how "Ode to a Half Pound of Ground Round" starts.  I assume rootsy is involved.

Lenny Dykstra just liked a tweet of mine. I felt good for a second, and then realized what a cesspool his Twitter feed is.

the avett brothers crowd was slightly different than the harry styles crowd. but the positive vibes flowed forth.

That Parquet Courts song is killer.

Lenny Dykstra was the Matthew Perry of the Mets 30 for 30 documentary. Loved his stories and his take on it all, but you just can't get past how rough he looks and sounds. Plus a million F-bombs.

Digging a bunch of these tracks. But this day in record release history was pretty crazy.

30 years ago today, Nevermind by Nirvana, The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest, Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden, Hymns to the Silence by Van Morrison and by the Pixie's.

Lots of music for every type of music fan.

The week before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco was released. The 90's had some amazing single day record releases.

boy, do i have a post for you, squeak!

Parquet Courts is a band I often forget about but always enjoy.

Had a weird/scary thing happen to me last night. Picked my daughter up from soccer practice at 7. Came home to eat dinner and within minutes began to feel very lightheaded. After a few more minutes I was hit with a sudden case of vertigo. Unstable on my feet, the room moving around in my vision. I was totally unable to function. The only thing I could do was lay down with my eyes closed. Fell asleep and didn't wake up until close to 9 this morning. Still feeling a little off today but far, far better than last night. I have no idea what happened. My right ear was a little off throughout the day so that's all I can think of. Weird shit.

Whitney said...

Mark, that sounds scary as shit. Hope it fades away quickly.

Don't eat the brown acid.

TR said...

Pls see a doc ASAP. There is a spectrum of potential causes for that, but see the doc to rule out the worst case causes.

Cool music.
Mark —hope this doesn’t happen again. My sister had a horrible vertigo episode that occurred quickly, never had it before, and ended up in the hospital. Took like 3 full days to recover. Good news is hasn’t ever happened since.

Hope everyone has a good weekend! Around here feeling equally angry, sad, frustrated, and heartbroken (can you be equally fourways?!) for a family in church I serve —the 32 year old grandson of my church member…he refused vaccination—he died yesterday. OMDL!

TR said...

Terrible news, Donna. Has that fatality changed any minds in the family or your parish? May be the only silver lining.

Sad. I hope some people are getting the damn message.

Thanks for hipping me to the Tom T Hall song. Had never heard it before.

Pretty much done with work for the week so I’m now just sitting on the couch monitoring my laptop and watching the Ryder Cup. Not a bad setup.

Mark said...

Jordan and Ahmad in the house! Ahmad puffing on a Cuban!

TR said...

Ha. I just saw Jordan as well, fist-pumping to DJ's putting. I did not know Jon Rahm was not an American until yesterday. I never heard him speak b/c he never wins.

Ryder Cup, Red Sox-Yanks and NFL on Sunday make for a nice sports w/e. The NCAA football scheudle is a bit of a dud. Hard to get pumped for Razorbacks-Aggies or Rutgers-Michigan.

A buddy of mine programs some of the music on our local low power FM station. It's currently playing an hour long "booty mix". Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" just played, and now it's "Bonita Applebum"

zman said...

I’m extremely disappointed with myself for not thinking of making a bootie mix.

Many of these tunes made the cut. They have to keep it clean before 10pm. Shake Your Booty by Freddie King is another gem in this mine.

TR said...

Thong Song embodies the spirit of the theme.

Mark said...

Ms. Fat Booty.

I want to make one of these butt themed playlists as well.

TR’s not wrong about the CFB slate. Though, I am intrigued by Arkansas-A&M and Norte Dame-Wisconsin. And I’m always down for a potential thrashing of Tennessee by Florida.

Dave said...

thanks to ORF rock, i am listening to more canned heat.

it's working!

Spencer Hall’s “Might win, might lose. Definitely gonna womp” rant re: Arkansas has me interested in that one.

Mark said...

Arkansas is a line of scrimmage killing machine. They’ll never be an elite SEC team, because, Arkansas but Sam Pittman has built a damn good team out of nothing in less than two years. And Rootsy, I love that you’re a Spencer Hall fan. Florida alum, original CFB blogger, great beard.

Mark said...

Liberty-Cuse is a good game. Rooting for Liberty makes me feel dirty but Malik Willis is a hell of a QB. Too bad Gus Malzahn didn’t know.

Whitney said...

Loose Booty by Sly and the Family Stone. Beasties fans will enjoy it.

rootsminer said...

Tutti-Frutti’s original rhyme was supposedly good booty, but they couldn’t let Little Richard put THAT on a record.

Mark said...

The Notre Dame-FSU game makes a lot more sense when you realize that Notre Dame isn’t very good this year. Wisconsin is worse.

TR said...

Some drama at the Ryder Cup. Of course, DeChambeau is involved. Fleetwood/Hovland wouldn’t concede a short put to him in the wind. Bryson hit the putt and then laid his putter down to show how short it was, looking pissed off in the process. I expect this to blow up in his face. Seems easy to get into his head. Scheffler’s gonna need to be on his game today to carry the duo.

Mark said...

Graham Mertz is fucking awful. Must be a bummer for Wisconsin fans that the first highly rated QB recruit they’ve ever had is a total bust.

Have to go to a funeral in a bit. My tattoo artist (he’s been tattooing my wife and I for 20 years so he’s a family formed at this point). His 22 year old daughter (a brilliant trans human- taught herself Japanese years ago) took her life last week. Not looking forward to this at all.

rob said...

that’s tragic, mark. peace and grace up to your friend and his family.

Mark said...

Thanks, Rob. That was rough.

rootsminer said...

That's awful Mark. Such a shame.

US Ryder Cup crowd seems a lil...much? I get that it's a tribal thing, but they seem a bit too hostile.

TR said...

I’m sorta with you on that, Rootsy. Some of it is amusing, like when they yell when the Euros practiced their swing on the first tee box, but the Sconnies are a tad aggressive.

Mark - hopefully the upsets in progress are a good distraction.

TR said...

Rutgers showed a lot of heart. Clemson showing a whole lot of nothing.

Donna said...

Mark —So very sorry for your friends. There are no words to ease such tragedy.

lovely anniversary dinner at a cool little restaurant in hot springs, va (home of slammin’ sammy snead). finished it off with a glass of ron zacapa 23, which always makes me think fondly of my man danimal.

I’m not a Christian but I endorse the comment from Marls.

I grew up as a Christian so to Jah I give thanks.

Mark said...

Kliff absolutely deserves to give up a TD for attempting to 68 yard FG. What a fucking dipshit.

The Rams just tweeted out a video of Jakes Ramsey getting out of a Rams themed sports car and putting on the coat of ridiculous/spectacular outfit. All with “I Got 5 on It” playing. It’s glorious. I implore you to check it out.

TR said...

There are multiple close games on Fox, but I am still stuck with Cle-Chi, which is not close. And it has been delayed twice due to injuries to chain gang workers. 20 pt lead w/ 4 mins left. Brutal.

TR said...

Jets suck ass at football. They are worse than last year in all phases. They had a delay of game on a field goal attempt. Their 2020 draft looks like a bust. Thankfully, I’ll only be able to watch them a couple times.

TR said...

Jets start w/ ball in 3rd qtr. they have a 3 and out, burning a TO in the process. And on the punt, their special teams captain gets an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting the guy who made the fair catch.

First play after that for the Broncos is a 15 yd facemask penalty.

inauspicious beginning to what turned out to be an incredibly lovely anniversary weekend. here are the highlights (and the lowlight)

- someone to be left unnamed (but might be typing this) absentmindedly types 'the homestead' into google maps and hits 'start' on the navigation. couple hours later, same person starts to think he and his wife might be in the wrong place. because they are. wound up at a farm named 'the homestead' outside of charlottesville, which is not at all the homestead resort in hot springs, va. corrected the mistake, which cost about two hours and made us miss our scheduled weekend-beginning massages.

- rest of the weekend was sublime. had really good booze sitting in rocking chairs on the porch, ate great meals on property and off, did an amazing guided hike with the resort's naturalist, who's worth the price of admission all by himself. also got to do falconry for the first time ever - had a harris hawk land on my (heavily-gloved) hand and eat a morsel. that was cool.

- silver lining of missing our friday massages is that we rescheduled for this morning, so we got up, had our coffee, then started the day with swedish massages, a dip in a mineral hot spring, and a little dry sauna. pretty, pretty good.

22 years on, we still like spending time together, so i think we've got a chance.
