Folks, you know what to do*

This list, it is...incorrect. I know the Jersey guys will agree, and why the fuck is the meth lab of democracy ranked 7th? Bump Oregon and Vermont, and drop Texas waaaaaay down. Mississippi, you seem good right there, no no put your hand down, we're not listening.

And Hawaii we see you... nice.

Methodology: 1,211 US adults were asked to choose the better of two states from a list of the 50 US states and Washington, D.C. in a series of head to head match-ups.

  1. West Virginia is high-fiving itself like crazy

  2. We “better” measured in terms of vacation potential? I’m sure there are lots of awesome pharma and tech jobs in Hawaii, it isn’t all hospitality and surfboard rentals.

  3. Arizona was almost certainly selected based solely on its weather. It certainly wasn't the mediocre sports teams, prolific street racing, or 1.5 star chain restaurants.

I was in Arizona two years ago for Thanksgiving. 80 degrees or higher every day; there were people in heavy coats on an 84 degree day.

  4. Virginia seems a wee bit high, though not as high as we'll be in July.

  5. Z mentions (slightly confusingly) the key: what’s “better”? I bet some people voted with political reasoning. Others livability. Others vacation. Others sheer size or shape or state bird.

  6. Rootsy, possession legalized July 1 right... but when do I get to enjoy the retail shopping experience in The Commonwealth?

  7. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Teej. I suspect you’ll still need to find a private seller for a few years at least. Or grow your own.

  8. Or keep driving to DC for my special brownie bites...

  9. you really need categories . . .

    weather and weed: colorado

    beer and scenery: Vermont

    food and hiking: New Mexico

pizza and high taxes: New Jersey

    rednecks and rappelling: West Virginia

    etc.

  11. i've never been to alabama. what do they have?

  12. Alabama has Gulf of Mexico coastline my elite Northeastern friend. It still sucks though.

I have a lot of issues with this list and I also suspect a majority of folks voted based on places where they want to visit. Not live. More annoyingly (on my part), let’s not pretend that all parts of a state are created equal. As I’ve stated here many times before, 85% of Florida can eat a dick.

  13. Pennsylvania by 13 over South Carolina. This list is bonkers.

  14. Mark makes a great point. Most (but not all) of Rhode Island is pretty similar. Florida, California, and even Virginia have extremely disparate regions.

It’s a silly list, but it got us talking. Nice, Teej.
