Things I Learned Last Night

Last night I served as a guest speaker at an event. People were supposed to learn from me, but I learned some incredible things at dinner afterwards.

There is a Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. Members include Frederick Booker Noe Jr., Col. Albert Bacon Blanton, Tom Bulleit, many men named Beam, and Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle. Initiated members get one of these mini-still trophies:

The Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame historians teamed up with the Kentucky Distiller's Association to create the First Official Bourbon History Timeline. Clarence's first sip of bourbon, circa 1912, oddly did not make the timeline.

Perhaps most important, there is something called the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. For a nominal sum, a tour bus will drive you to seven different bourbon distilleries over the course of three days. Whilst at the distilleries, you drink bourbon. They even have a Kentucky Bourbon Trail App to help you complete the trip. Why the hell didn't any of you tell me about this before? And when are we going?

  1. That sounds like a good three day weekend trip. Screw Disney. But don't expect to sample any Jack if you go to their distillery in TN, it's in a dry county. We learned the hard way.

  5. So, Jon Runyan is retiring at the end of next year from his service as the US House Representative from New Jersey's 3rd Congressional district. This is a just right of center congressional district that includes Mount Laurel and Toms River. So who, you may ask, is rumored to be the republican running to fill this seat? None other than Al Leiter. Seriously. After he finishes a couple terms, Gregg Jeffries is going to take a swing at it, followed by Mike Quick.

  8. just ate an apple the "correct" way. there is definitely a core in there, i cursed several times, and the seeds are no fun. you can do it, and i did eat a bit more of the apple than normal, but i'm not recommending this method.

  18. Very sad to hear the Christensen news. His ~4-yr reign as a premier TE who revolutionized the position in the late 80's should not be overlooked. I loved him as a Raider. Before there was Ben Coates and Tony Gonzalez, there was Todd. And his bitching stache. Rest in peace, number 46.
