Music Mondays with Shlara

I love Friday Night Lights (the TV show), and I especially love Coach and Tami Taylor, so I needed to include a photo of them in all of their adorableness.

You know that song "Devil Town" that played at the end of one of the first few episodes of FNL?

Well, it was written by this guy Daniel Johnston--a local Austin music legend. His album cover art was made famous on a t-shirt worn my Kurt Cobain ("Hi, How are You?")

Check out the baby-faced Dave Grohl in this photo!!

Johnston's version of "Devil Town" is haunting:

I know you're wondering how I got here...
So, there was an awesome song at the end of GIRLS last night--and twitter told me it was my favorite Irish duo, Swell Season and Daniel Johnston, performing at SXSW a few years ago. Listen to this one--it's good:

I know you've heard me talk about Glen & Marketa...the movie Once.
This is their famous song, Falling Slowly:

And, this is classic Glen doing Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" at Cochella a few years ago.
All of this sound is him, by himself.
I love Glen.

  1. Seahawks just got Percy Harvin. If he stays healthy, quite the get.

  2. And if he misses 6-10 games a year?

  3. You mean 6-9 games a year.

  4. That's huge for Seattle. I'm sure Percy is happy about having a good QB and Washington's, um, progressive take on marijuana.

  5. How does the NFL reconcile its drug testing with the WA state law? I guess the NFL does test previous offenders for alcohol so I guess they can do whatever the fuck they want.

  6. Yeah. We are experiencing that where I work. We have a Federal subcontract in Bremerton, Washington. We drug-test employees. If they test positive for weed, they won't have broken any laws where they live. Makes it interesting.

  7. Given the love of NBA players for the wacky tobacky, I really hope Seattle gets a team back sooner rather than later, just to see how the state's weed policy affects players wanting to specifically play in Washington.

  8. John Wall has only made 5 threes in the past two seasons? Whoa, that ugly ass jumper of his is even worse than I thought.

  9. The general disappointment in Chuck Klosterman's contributions to Grantland can be summed up by today's offering, an infinitely long exchange of emails from 9 months ago discussing David Bowie's death, which never actually happened. I've always though I'd read anything he writes, but this is really pushing it.

  10. Indeed. I only read the first email in the chain, which is from Klosterman, and can't reconcile its premise that "are no rock stars becoming the new rock stars" with Steven Hyden's recent Grantland love letter to the Black Keys regarding their ascendence to rock stardom.

  11. I scanned through the whole thing, mostly because I was curious if they'd talk about Bowie's appearance on that Ricky Gervais show that I never watched. Which they didn't. But that scene is pretty funny.

  12. I think Klosterman saves his good stuff for his books and I don't think Gladwell contributes more than once a year. Both appear to have Grantland contractually limited to email exchanges.

  13. we just watched "primer" and did klosterman's time travel essay in philosophy class today.

loved the first season of friday night lights, especially the ending and the song "devil town." i liked it so much, i learned it on my guitar (that and the trueblood theme are both good ones).

i've heard later seasons of friday night lights are good, but i couldn't get through the second season.

  14. I like Music Mondays with Shlara.

I do not like that Shlara loses in fantasy hoops to Arrogant Newspaper 8-1 every time she plays him.

  15. Question for Shlara or anybody else - why does Lena Dunham look so much worse on the show than in real life? I know she goes out on a limb with her character, but does the character need to dress so brutally? Her awful wardrobe is the fifth lead. If I knew the antonym to "accentuates", I would use that word.

  16. Continue watching FNL, Dave. You'll be glad you did.

  17. It was all lined up for a terrible CAA team to make that magical run to Dayton.

  21. The fucking fouls these guys are calling....

  22. Did anyone hear Brady at the half say to the sideline reporter, "they're going to come back...would be surprised if this isn't a 2 possession game with a couple minutes left." I am now thinking he went in and told his team the same thing.

  23. Brady is the Jmu's coach, by the way.

  24. Jerry, it appears "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn is back in the WWE.

  33. James Madison...Liberty...no it's not the beginning of a voiceover of a founding fathers documentary....it's the in-state rivalry we've all been waiting for...on the biggest stage of them of them all...the game before La Salle plays Boise State.

  36. those crean/harbaugh family reunions must be really mellow affairs

  37. TR--about Lena's "look" on the show. Read that the costume department deliberately picks out ill-fitting (too small, wrong color for her skin, dated) clothes and even tailors things to look worse for her Hannah character. Like the opposite of Sex & the City.

And, it works--she looks like a disaster. I am always surprised when I see Lena looking nice in the real world.

I'm not sure how any of these actors will be able to break out of their GRILS stereotype for future gigs. They are really believable and NOT AT ALL likable. I basically hate-watch that show.

  38. Keeping it CAA, the Spurs announcer called Gary Neal, "The Towson Triple". And Sean Elliott calls the Spurs "we" every time. You'd expect the Spurs to have a better announcing team. But you'd be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  39. kinda like jerry with w&m hoops

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'd classify my relation with Tribe hoops to be less "hate" watch and more "barely" watch. I reserve the right to do some bandwagoneering. The whole Dayton thing kind of kills it for me though.
